Much like dayton, I wll offer my $.02 even though I'm not IUB. It is hard to say who I want the most right now. First we need to get to LOI day and see how mnay FR are coming along with how many players return (hopfully all except Munir Prince). Then we have a number of how many we can take in 09. I was thinking it would be aroud 15. Even then It will be hard to say who I want most until the 09 recruits have more time to attend camps and we get to see more of them and what other offers go out. Then Spring ball comes and we'll start to see what areas we lack depth and hopefully we don't have any bad injuries. Last year we knew we missed on quite a few in the defensive front 7 (Williams, Smith and Neal came through for us though). This year I don't think we have nearly as many glaring needs to address. If I had to choose one recruit right now, I would say...
Xavier Nixon. I would be thrilled to have him this year and Seantrel in 2010 in back to back classes. Sam Young is not so young anymore and these guys are the next Sam Young type OTs.

CW has shown he can get the QBs, TBs, WRs to make the big plays on offense. We just need to keep getting 5 star O-linemen to enabe the others to put the points on the board.

I want Manto Te'o. Our inside linebackers are very thin. McDonald and Posluzsny may step in, but Te'o may have more potential. Posluzsny has the genes, but Te'o has the skills. It also helps that we would most likely steal him from USC :)

McFarland would be #1 on my list. It would be nice to get the top Defensive player in a class, especially considering he is a DT.

This initial offer list of ten guys for 2009 is very similar in some ways to the first group of guys offered in the 2008 class, but in other ways it is vastly different.

The similarity is that CW is offering a very elite group early on, just as he did last year. Nine of the 10 guys offered thus far are on both the Scout and Rivals pre-season 100 lists. 4 of them are Rivals 5 stars and ranked in the Top 8 players in the country, 2 of them are Scout 5 stars of which there are only presently 10. However, that is where the similarity abruptly ends.

Of ND's first four offers in the Class of 2008, three are ND verbal commits, (Floyd, Filer, and TRob) and the fourth, Dan Buckner, was very early on said to be favoring ND. All 4 of those guys had ND as either their leader, or co-leader, before they were even offered, and ND was at least in the mix on almost all of their early offers to elite recruits last year.

That is not the case with this group at all. In fact ND is probably in the best position with the least highly rated of the first 10 offers in the Class of 2009, De'von Flournoy, and even Flournoy's successful recruitement may depend somewhat on where ND ends up with Milton Knox. Unlike Floyd & Filer, ND is not the clear leader for any of these guys, nor are they the co-leader as they were in the case of TRob and Buckner.

It's still very early, and CW/CB have certainly proven this year that they can pull off some stunners, but at this point in time Notre Dame has a lot of work to do with the first 10 of 2009. Let's look at the early line, so we can see later where things pan out for these 10 guys.

Simon & Campbell- Both have already committed to their HSU.

Nixon & Holloman- Both seem set right now on staying somewhere in the Carolinas.

Te'o- ND has all sorts of obstacles to overcome to successfully recruit Manti.

Kennard- ND currently not even in the picture here as it appears to be already a battle between only USC & ASU.

Wood- Wood is likely to be the Top RB in the Class of 2009, sorry Bryce Brown. That fact combined with being from Southern California is going to make this one very difficult. Notre Dame's entre here is that Wood goes to a private Catholic prep school, but Sarkisian is all over Wood already about a #1 (Barkley)/#2 player in the country combo for the Trojans for 2009.

McFarland- Jamarkus has not been offered by Texas yet, but that seems to be a mere formality. He is planning on going to a Junior Day in Austin next month where he will no doubt get an offer. McFarland's immediate reaction to that offer will determine whether ND has any shot here at all, but the Irish are certainly not a favorite at this point.

Bonds- Notre Dame offered early here, so that helps. Other than the Irish, only Miami and South Carolina have offered thus far. Other than Flournoy, Bonds has had the most complimentary things to say about the ND offer, but it will still be very difficult to pull a top flight DE from the heart of SEC/ACC country.

Flournoy- Similar to Bonds, ND offering early helps here. In fact, Flournoy's only offer to date is from the Irish. That should keep Notre Dame in the race here, but Flournoy has already said that he also like USC and UCLA quite a bit. ND's advantage here might be that USC will wait quite a while to offer De'von.
It's not a very optimistic analysis at this point, but it is still very early, and the ND staff has barely started to work on these guys. Still compared to the status of the early 2008 offers this might give you some clue as to why CW seems so adamant in maxing out the 2008 Class.

On the optimistic side, there is pretty solid information that ND does have the pledge of three as yet un-offered 2009 recruits who are just waiting on their Official Offers to commit. One of these is supposed to be an offensive player, and is widely considered to be CT TE Jake Golic. The other two are supposed to be defensive players, but there is no definitive consensus as to who they might be.

Just a P.S. on the first 10. Seven of the 10 guys are from High Schools that ND has not had a player from in the last 35 years. The three that have ND links are:

Te'o/Punahao- The only Hawaiian Irish player (Jason Ching- 1996) in the past 35 years came from Manti's school.

Simon/Mooney- The McCarthy brothers and one other Mooney grad (Joe Kelty- 1985) in the past 35 years did not help here.

Bonds/Richland Northeast- Forgot about this one. Gary Gray is a Richland Northeast guy which has to help the Irish here.

Im just assuming that Barkley is an absolute SC guy.

None of this looks optimistic. Jake I believe is an automatic but man it makes you wonder. TE is already loaded and we already had a transfer this year. They are talking like he is one of the best TE's in the nation or maybe it's the Courant trying to amp him up.

I would like to see us get some d-lineman personally. I guess we will wait and see how things unfold.
