    Irish Offer Pagano (free)

Scott Pagano has well over 20 scholarship offers and several other schools are showing serious interest in the Hawaiian defensive lineman.

“There are so many it’s hard to keep track at this point to be honest,” Moanalua High School (Honolulu) head coach Arnold Martinez said. “It’s been pretty hectic.”

On Thursday, the 6-foot-4, 270-pounder can added an offer he says he'll be sure to keep track of through the entire process.

The Irish offered Pagano on Thursday, joining schools like Hawaii, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Cal, Washington, Nebraska, Michigan, Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Colorado, Illinois and several others.

Even with such a lengthy list the Irish offer made an impact.

“It’s a big-time offer,” Pagano said. “They’re a big powerhouse team with a great defense led by Manti Te'o. They’re going be a team on my radar this whole recruiting process.”

Notre Dame assistant Mike Denbrock will be out to see Pagano later this month.

USC, Oklahoma, Miami and Texas A&M are among those who haven’t offered yet, but could soon.

“I think our biggest thing now is keeping Scott grounded and understanding the process,” said Martinez.

The first thing that college scouts see is Pagano’s size, but it doesn’t take long for them to see his athleticism as well.

“He’s not an out of shape big guy,” said Martinez. “He’s athletic, he can move and he’s built extremely well. He’s man-sized. He’s not carrying a lot of excess body fat and he’s athletic with his size. He gets off well, he studies well. He studies tendencies well in the film room and he executes some good technique.

“Now, he’s not perfect. Everybody has things to work on, but with his size, his dimensions and his athletic ability and what he’s able to do in the film room as a junior, I’m sure the colleges project him out.”

The main thing Martinez and his staff are working with Pagano is knowing when to use his strength instead of relying on his quickness.

“He’ll try to out-athlete a guy rather than use good strike form and leverage,” said Martinez. “That’s when he’s at his best, when he comes off and fires off. When you get that kind of size with good pad level, it’s hard to move a guy like that out of the gap.”

Still, it’s tempting for Pagano to try to blow by his opponent quickly because he’s seen success doing that.

“There was a game where he knocked the ball out of the quarterback’s hands on the mesh and then recovered the fumble,” laughed Martinez. “He’s got quickness too.”

But Pagano’s size, build, technique and leverage are what he’ll be able to rely on the majority of the time.

“I’m sure the coaches are evaluating all of those things, but obviously the coaches see a lot of the same things that this kid could possibly be a guy who dominates and that’s why he’s getting this attention,” said Martinez.

Pagano is also a good kid away from the field.

“He’s not a guy who’s pounding his chest a whole lot,” his coach said. “My main thing with Scott is for him to remain humble and hungry and he’s doing a good job of that. He does well in the classroom and doesn’t get in a lot of trouble.”

An offer from Yale signifies just how well Pagano takes care of his classroom duties. Education will be an important component when Pagano and his family sit down to narrow his options.

“His parents have a criteria they’ll be looking at,” said Martinez. “Because of the vast amount of interest, they’re going to be particular about their criteria.”

It's still early, but Notre Dame fits the early criteria.
