Autry Denson becomes head coach of Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II High announced Monday that former NFL running back and college football star Autry Denson has been named the school's football coach. Denson replaces Chris Kokell, who left to become the football coach at Forest Hill.

Denson, 33, started for the Miami Dolphins in the 1999 and 2000 seasons, after which he played for the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts. Before turning pro, Denson set the record as the all time leading rusher at the University of Notre Dame, capping a spectacular college career that included being named MVP of the 1999 Gator Bowl and team MVP for the 1997, 1998 and 1999 seasons.

"We can't begin to express how excited the entire Pope John Paul High community is with Autry's arrival," said Athletic Director Scott Baker. "He's a knowledgeable, experienced and successful athlete. Moreover, he's a person with exceptional character and principles. We consider ourselves very fortunate that he will be guiding our student athletes at Pope."

Denson is a South Florida native and graduate of Nova High in Davie, where he set the Broward County rushing record. He was named 1995 offensive player of the year by the Sun Sentinel and player of the year by the Miami Herald.
