Scout- = One 5 star , Five 4 stars, and Eight 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.50

ESPN - Three 4 stars, and Eleven 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.21

    Notes:

ESPN has 1 ND commit on their ESPN 150. Rivals has 3 ND commits on their R250. Scout has 7 ND commits on their S300.

Despite the fact that Scout has more ND commits in their top ranks than Rivals, and that both of those services have some vastly different ratings on the same recruits, they both end up giving the current ND class an identical average 3.5 star ranking.

With the Shembo commit, Notre Dame leapfrogs Stanford & scUM to #9 on the current Rivals Team Rankings. ND is two spots ahead of Stanford despite Harbaugh’s class that currently includes 9 more commits than ND’s. The Irish are currently #10 on the Scout Team Rankings. ESPN has not yet formulated a Team Ranking for the 2010 Class.

    Cameron Roberson NR Mid 3*
    Bennett Jackson NR Mid 3*
    Kendall Moore NR Mid 3*
    Justin Utupo NR Mid 3*

    Star Ratings Summary.

Rivals- One 5 star , Seven 4 stars, Eight 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.56

Scout- One 5 star , Seven 4 stars, Eight 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.56

ESPN- Four 4 stars, Twelve 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.25

    Notes:

With the Tai-ler Jones verbal, ESPN now has 1 ND commit in their Top 100, and a total of 2 on their ESPN 150. Rivals has 6 ND commits in their R250, but still only 1 Top 100. Scout has 8 ND commits in their S300, and 3 of those are in their Top 100.

Although they frequently rank the same players differently Rivals and Scout continue to show the same average star ratings for the current ND class. What is odd is that despite the fact that Scout has more ND commits ranked in their Top 100 than Rivals does, the Irish are actually ranked higher in the current Rivals Team Rankings at #11 than they are on Scout, where ND is ranked #14.

ESPN also now has a Team Ranking for the 2010 Class, but they currently show only a Top 15 and they also only make updates at the end of a month. On their latest update as of 9/30, the Irish were listed as being "on the cusp" of the Top 15. Since Tai-ler Jones is now the highest ranked ND recruit on their board, the Irish will probably crack the Top 15 when they update it at the end of this month.

One thing to note in the Team Rankings is that both Rivals and Scout do their Team Rankings based purely on quantitative measurements related to their rankings of each individual recruit whereas ESPN also adds a subjective element. In other words the Rivals and Scout team rankings have a subjective(on the recruit/objective (on the team) basis, while the ESPN team rankings are subjective on both criteria.

The Martin rating is just silly, but most of the difference has to do with how ESPN is assigning star ratings. Their high 3 star recruits are listed mostly as 4 star recruits on Scout and Rivals. This applies to all of their recruits, not just those committed to the Irish. If you factor in that differential their average star ranking for the ND commits would jump to 3.44, not as high as the 3.56 that Rivals and Scout has, but pretty close.

    Star Ratings Summary.

Rivals- One 5 star , Eight 4 stars, Nine 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.56

Scout- One 5 star , Eight 4 stars, Nine 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.56

ESPN- Six 4 stars, Twelve 3 stars = Avg. Star Ranking of 3.33

    Notes:

Toney Hurd is an ESPN 150 recruit so with this verbal, ESPN now has a total of 3 Irish commits on the ESPN 150. Rivals has 7 ND commits in their R250, but only 1 Top 100. Scout has 9 ND commits in their S300, and 4 of those are in their Top 100.

Hurd is a 3 star on both Rivals and Scout so they continue to show the same average star ratings for the current ND class.

ESPN currently updates their Team Rankings only at the end of the month. ND was "on the cusp" in their end of September update, but October commits of Jones, Bernard and now Hurd will move the Irish into their Top 15 when they publish the end of October update. Both Jones and Hurd are ESPN 150 recruits.

ESPN has a new 150 and even though it has some upgrades on most of the ND verbals, there is no actual change in their star rankings of ND commits and they have not updated their Team Rankings since 9/30.

In summary here are the changes.

Blake Lueders enters the ESPN 150 @ #150 and now gives ND 4 ESPN 150 commits.

The other 3 Martin, Jones, and Hurd also moved up on the E150. Jones & Hurd moved up slightly while Martin's ridiculous #143 ranking moved up 33 slots to #110, which is still ridiculous.

Martin was also the only ND commit to have an actual change in his ESPN/Scouts Inc. rating as he was upgraded from a 80/'4* to a 81/4*.

In the positional rankings, Jones, Lueders, Martin, Bernard, Rees, and Jackson all moved up, although other than Martin those moves up were mostly insignificant.

The only two who were lowered in the positional rankings were Shembo & Utupo. In both of those cases it was an insignifcant one slot drop. The other 10 ND verbals saw no change in their positional rankings.

Overall it looks as though this new version of the ESPN rankings was primarily related to some shuffling of the previous ESPN150. It looks as though the vast majority of the non ESPN150 recruits were virtually unchanged.
