90 slots presently occupied, including thirteen 5th year Seniors, of which a maximum of 6 might possibly return. 2 to 5 slots are still available for the 2012 roster with 5 slots likely if they can be filled.

There are still 90 slots occupied for 2012 though, including thirteen 5th year Seniors, because my previous update did not include counting Amir Carlisle against the overall scholarship cap for 2012. Carlisle is ineligible to play in 2012 but will immediately count against the scholarship cap. So even with the departure of Darby we are still looking at 2-5 slots available depending on what the staff's plans are for Goodman, Golic Jr., and Cwynar.

Even without futher commits in the Class of 2012, ND now has a whopping 32 players who will have Freshman eligibility in the 2012 season.

Note that Daniel Smith & Nicholas Tausch have both picked up an extra year of eligibility because they did not play during the 2011 season.

Also for those looking forward to the 2013 recruiting cycle there are currenly already 72 scholarship slots assigned for the 2013 team, including 2013 verbal commit Steve Elmer and the 9 potential 5th year Seniors listed below. There is a decent possibility though that most of that group of 9 will not be back for the 2013 season, either leaving for the NFL (Wood, Eifert, Watt, Martin) or not being asked back. (J. Golic, Stockton, Calabrese, Fox, Tausch)

My guess right now is the max we will see return in 2013 out of that group of 9 is three, which would make 20 available slots for the 2013 recruiting class with one already being occupied by Elmer.
