Better odds that Coney is a silent to OSU than Hilliard go anywhere but Columbus.

Te’von Coney, LB, 6-0, 220, Palm Beach Gardens High School, Palm Beach Gardens, FL attended Notre Dame’s one day Irish Invasion Camp. By the time his visit to South Bend ended, he had named the Irish his co-leader along with his home state school, Florida.

“I’d say Florida and Notre Dame are at the top right now,” he shared. “They’re tied right now.”

Coney’s visit went exceptionally well. What really stood out to the Florida standout was the thoroughness of his first Notre Dame campus experience.

“I got to see everything besides the dorm rooms,” he said. “I hung out with the players, I talked with a lot of people who went there. I talked to the coaches, spent a lot of time with them. I talked to a couple girls, the hosts, about the school. I heard some great things about it.”

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Coney’s visit was his time spent with the players. His assessment of Notre Dame’s players reflected what most Irish coaches, administration and fans hope to be true of the young men that are recruited into the program.

“I think the players are honest people,” he stated. “Everyone is there for two reasons; to graduate and play in the NFL. The players have great heads on their shoulders. They’re all focused. There are just great people there.”

Coney’s recruiter is Notre Dame Recruiting Coordinator Tony Alford. His relationship with Alford is very strong but grew even stronger during his visit. He also got the opportunity to strengthen his relationship with Coach Kelly.

“Coach Alford, he’s a great recruiter,” the four-star prospect opined. “He’s an honest person. That’s one of the coaches I truly trust in this process. Coach Kelly, he gave me a great impression. He was an honest guy. He was straightforward with the things he talked about. I feel like he’s a great coach and I would love to play under him.”

Amid all the other positives that Coney took away from his Notre Dame visit, was also the opportunity to get on the field early.

“They showed me the roster and I watched practice,” he commented. “The new scheme they have is perfect for me. They don’t really have a Will linebacker right now. They need an athletic linebacker to come in and play.”

Is this supposed to mean what I think it is supposed to mean, or does it mean nothing, just chose the ND wardrobe for the day.

The latter. He isn't Irish ... yet.

So do recruits get free gear from anyone they visit?

07-06-2014, 09:11 AM
Not 100% sure. I don't remember seeing him wearing that stuff in the Irish Invasion videos. I'll bet kids get some free stuff at camps (ie that specific camp t-shirt, etc) but this looks more like it might have been a bookstore purchase.

But I'm not going to be the one who tells him adidas is out.

Blue & Gold Illustrated has learned that one of Notre Dame's top defensive targets in the class of 2015 has set his official visit to check out South Bend for 48 hours.

Sources have confirmed that Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High School four-star linebacker Tevon Coney, who has a top two of Notre Dame and Florida, will visit South Bend on Sept. 6 when the Irish take on Michigan.

The 6-1, 225-pounder first visited South Bend for the Irish Invasion camp on June 20 and this visit will mark his second trip to Notre Dame.

There are 24 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions on Coney's profile. 21 of those predictions have him choosing the Gators, while three have him ending up with the Irish.

Coney's offer list includes Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, Miami, Kentucky and many others.
As a junior, Coney totaled 172 tackles, 14 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and had two interceptions.

Per 247Sports, Coney is the No. 11 inside linebacker in the country and the No. 38 overall prospect in Florida.

33%. I think it will be tough to lure him from Florida, but I hope he is enjoying what he is seeing from BVG's aggressive D.

10-14-2014, 01:48 PM
What do you think our chances are?

Hmm, 51/49; it's either Notre Dame or Florida. Miami is a distant 3rd.

There was a quote from Rivals about his recruitment coming down to coaching stability. You'd think that means ND. We'll see.

10-14-2014, 05:31 PM
Well I'd had the feeling it was us all along, but over the last month or so I'm not sure if I have that same feeling. Thought I'd check with peeps here to get an idea. Thanks!

10-14-2014, 06:16 PM
I have a feeling he will be Irish.

10-16-2014, 01:51 PM
No big deal, but he is moving his announcement back ... a whole 2 days to the 23rd. A lot of experts are picking ND.

10-17-2014, 01:56 AM
After watching the Irish-D over the 1st half of the season... one would imagine that most recruits on the defensive side would be desiring to play in VanGorder's scheme. It is fast and exciting. What kid wouldn't want that?!?!?! PLUS to get to play for a guy who looks like this after a BIG play...

10-17-2014, 10:29 AM
You gotta love BVG's enthusiasm, that's for sure!

10-18-2014, 04:20 AM
I love it... its so awe inspiring to see a coach that gets as excited for his kids as his kids do is great!!! I can't wait to see him that excited later today as Notre Dame takes it to Fl st!!! We will be victorious today!!! Mark my words we will be undefeated... still at the end of the game today!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Irish land Coney

Pete Sampson
IrishIllustrated.com Editor

Notre Dame's linebacker class is complete.

On Thursday morning four-star athlete Tevon Coney from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., committed to the Irish, which beat out the in-state Gators head-to-head for the 6-foot, 221-pound prospect. Coney, who will get a school visit from Irish assistant coach Tony Alford later today, is Notre Dame's 21st verbal commitment and third linebacker.
"For the next four years, I'll be playing at the University of Notre Dame," Coney said during an announcement at his high school.

He plans to do mid-year enrollment, joining the Irish program in January.

Coney, who first visited Notre Dame for the Irish Invasion in June and returned for the Michigan game on his official visit, joins Josh Barajas and Asmar Bilal in the program's linebacker haul.

The Coney commitment will move Notre Dame to No. 7 in the Rivals.com Team Rankings, jumping Florida State and Auburn.

"They have a great team and great academics," Coney told Rivals.com earlier this month. "And I like how their linebackers play aggressive. They have a big front four and they're coached very well. They use an NFL scheme and it's a good scheme to play in."

The final hurdle for Notre Dame to clear was Florida, which got an official visit for its home loss to LSU on Oct. 11. The Irish were confident in their chances before that final look at Gainesville, and not much changed coming out of that trip.

The commitment builds on Alford's work dating back to the summer when he convinced Coney to attend the Irish Invasion in June alongside his father. After entering the mix during the spring evaluation period thanks in part to Brian VanGorder, that summer look helped keep Notre Dame there for the duration.

"It was more than what I thought," Coney told Irish Illustrated last summer. "When I got here and first saw the campus, it was 'Wow.' I didn't think the campus would be that good. It was surprising to hear about the renovations and what they're doing to continue to make Notre Dame a better school.

"The first impression was good. I loved the campus, the facilities, all the great people there. The supporting staff, all the people to support you, they're all over. I really enjoyed it."

Mixing with Notre Dame's current roster during that weekend was key to making Coney feel comfortable in South Bend, including Jaylon Smith, Greg Bryant and Nyles Morgan.

"Greg Bryant is from my area, like 10 minutes away from me and he talked to me about the challenge there, how it makes you become a man and continue to grow," Coney said. "I talked to Nyles and he gave me good advice. Jaylon gave great advice. He told me if I want to get a great education and play great football to come to Notre Dame, not that he was trying to talk me into going there. But if I decided to come there he said he'd have my back 100 percent."

Coney also liked VanGorder's scheme, which has helped turn the Irish into contenders for the College Football Playoff.

"There's a lot of blitzing and I'm good at that," Coney said. "They need a will linebacker like me and I can come in and get early playing time. The defense is moving toward guys like me, guys like Jaylon Smith getting out there and making plays."
