Dual threat QB that subbed in for injured teammate and helped lead Carmel to the 5A State Championship game where they ran into the buzzsaw known as Warren Central.

Newton finished up 30 of 58 for 464 yards with 7 TDs and 3 INTs. He ran the ball 38 times for 159 yards and 1 TD. Already been offered from IU and Purdue.

No, he's definitely not a pro style QB. I'd really like to know if that person has even seen him play in person. He may eventually grow into that, but he runs more then he passes right now. The Carmel offense is very run oriented.

Morgan is getting attention from all of the big boys, but he has a lot of interest in Notre Dame. He and his dad are really on board right now, however it's still very early. Let's see if Charlie can keep the borders closed off, if this in fact is his QB of choice.

Morgan is a Scholar athlete and honor roll student. He has taken advanced courses since 7th grade. Sounds like ND material to me. Since Weis is most likely taking 1 QB per year I would not be suprised to see only him get offered next year instead of Barkley.

I think Charlie and the rest of the staff do need to keep the top players in Indiana from leaving the state if they fit into Charlie's plans. Let the college football world know we keep them instate if we want them and we come into your backyard and take them from you.

With the commitments of Clausen and Crist, Charlie has the luxury of taking a chance on a QB who might not be as highly rated as those two. It's too early for me to tell how highly ranked Morgan will be but those guys are the cream of the crop. I'd like to see ND nab him and nab him early to get the ball rolling, and maintain our stance on recruiting like daytonirish said. We may have a tiny back yard (talent wise) but it's our backyard damnit.

If he really already has verbal offers from Purdue and Indiana then I'm impressed. We'll see come Sept. 1st if he adds any other Big10 offers (I don't expect the big boys like O$U, ND, and UM to offer that early either.)

I agree....I also think that if you have too much of one kind of player....i.e. the golden armed QB, then you are limiting what you can do as a team. Don't think that CW wouldn't try and work this kid in at the end of games to give him some PT....that means that the opposing defense has to totally adjust how they play for him. It's a match up nightmare. I realize that in Crist and Clausen we have the best of the best, but don't forget that this is college...they can't all be phenoms.

Alright fellas... I saw Newton last night and I came away semi impressed. His team was playing the defending 4A State Champs (and they were runner up in 5A) and they pulled out 28-21 victory.

Newton started the game off with a 47 yard run -- I'm talking first snap of the game. I'm not sure how many yards he finished with, but it has to be close to 100 rushing, if not more. As for throwing the ball, he only threw the ball like 5 times the whole game, but one did go to the house from about midfield. To be honest though, I only remember one other reception, so he probably finished 2 for 5 or 2 for 6, which was expected as Carmel is a run, run, run team.

Back to Newton. Kid has a very nice frame to build on as he definitely appears to be the 6-4, 6-5 he has been listed at. He is definitely a dual threat quarterback as I've said before. He can pull the ball down and run effortless and he glides when he runs. Also not scared to make contact and actually sought out contact and ran folks over. I take my Randall Cunningham comparison back as Cunningham didn't like to take a hit or dish it out like this kid does.

I don't have a real gauge on his arm and what he can do because that team runs so much. On his TD throw, it was a pretty simple throw (fade route) to make and his receiver did the rest. Come to think of it, pretty much each of his throws were of the fade variety.

I plan on going and seeing him again this season and hopefully my camera battery won't be dead from being left on by someone that will go nameless.

Regardless, Newton is an Indiana kid who has a strong interest in ND, and QB or not he is an exceptional athlete, which as we have seen you can not have too many of. I expect Newton to be offered shortly unless Powlus flat out tells him he has no shot at playing QB at ND. Of course, if that were the case I am not sure Powlus would be the one visiting him.

if they're a top prospect I agree with you. Morgan Newton has shown that he's a top prospect, but the WR from South Bend (Jarett Fleming) might not be a top prospect, but who knows. In this class there seems to be a few WRs with connections to ND, so we should be ok this year.

We have Flournoy (Knox's teammate), Joey Parris (Robbie's bro), Marlon Brown (good friends with Golden Tate), and Jarret Fleming (lives in South Bend)

Another IN prospect I would love to have is Tyquan Hammock, looks like he's going to be a player.

Newton has a solid enough offer sheet that he can play QB in college without worrying about any other position. If he was a guy who was willing to do anything to go to college at Notre Dame then you would think he might consider coming in as an Athlete, but I do not get that impression from him at all. The answer to the question of whether Newton will ever be offered by ND at any positions seems to have been answered when CW offered Budmayr.

Morgan Newton (Carmel, In.) QB
The first thing that jumps out at you in watching Newton is his size (6-4, 205). He is big and showed a very lively, strong arm. Newton threw pretty well but at the same time needs to work on throwing with better touch. He also shows pretty good mobility.

Sought-after Carmel High School quarterback Morgan Newton spent part of last week in Florida, but the senior-to-be wasn't there for the sun and sand. Football was the focus of the trip he took with his father John Newton, a former college player at Grambling.

Their main reason for the visit to the Sunshine State was to check out the University of Florida's football program, but the Newtons made the most of the week.

"We had a great time of it football-wise that four days we were down there," John Newton, said.

On Wednesday, the Newtons met with James Harris, a former Grambling quarterback and current vice-president of player personnel for the Jacksonville Jaguars, in Jacksonville. Thursday, the Newtons drove to Tampa and spent half the day with Doug Williams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The elder Newton and Williams - a former Super Bowl MVP while playing for the Washington Redskins - were teammates at Grambling, where Williams later coached. The Newtons got a chance to tour the Bucs' facilities and Williams, who works in the Bucs' front office, looked at Morgan Newton's highlight tape and critiqued the young quarterback.

"That was pretty cool, he was giving me some pointers and stuff," Morgan Newton said. "He said he really wouldn't change much, he was just helping me out on some things that pro QBs have to learn and telling me what he sees when he analyzes and scouts players. There was nothing on the throwing mention but he did say not to double-hitch step into the offensive line. To just hold your ground, that way you don't give the defensive line a chance to reach out and hit you or let the defensive line get a deflection."

Florida is on the list of suitors hoping Morgan Newton will be taking snaps for their team.

Neither Gators coach Urban Meyer or returning Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow were in Gainesville for part of the time, however. They were in California for Wednesday's taping of the ESPYs, which Meyer turned into a recruiting pitch during a phone conversation with Morgan.

"The first thing he said is, 'Hey Morgan, what's up? I'm just down here at the ESPYs. Hopefully I'll be here with you in four years," Morgan Newton said.

The Newtons met up with the coach and quarterback on Friday. Morgan Newton met Tebow in the training room and said Tebow was "a nice guy and very personable."

Later that night, Morgan participated in UF's Friday Night Lights summer camp with other top high school players in the upcoming senior, junior and sophomore classes. The players also got to view the facilities and check out the trophys, in addition to taking part in a pre-game simulation. Morgan Newton performed well at the camp, one of two quarterbacks to earn 'Best of the Best' accolades in a write-up by rivals.com recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg.

"It was just electrifiying to be out there in the lights and it really made an impression on Morgan to be in the Swamp," John Newton said.

On Saturday, the Newtons woke up pretty early and watched Gators reserve quarterback Cameron Newton throw. The Newtons also met with Meyer in his office for a final visit.

"He went away from his usual, 'If you want to win a Heisman, come here. If you want to win a national championship, come here,'" Morgan Newton said, noting that Meyer soon realized the normal recruiting pitch wasn't going to work and became more upfront. "And then he went into 'This is a business decision and you make the best decision for you. We have a lot of good things down here and what you might like and what will make you a better player and develop you for the next level.'"

Although still in the midst of the recruiting process, Morgan Newton is now trying to divert his attention towards preparing for his senior year of high school. The Greyhounds are hoping to defend their 2007 Class 5A state title, after all.

Miami and South Carolina are now longer on the original list of eight schools he's seriously considering, leaving Clemson, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Purdue still in the mix.

"I don't think about it as much as I probably should because we're getting into the season now," Morgan Newton said. "I don't look at it is as being a hard decision because my dad and I and my family as well know who gives us the best options."

I think I just lost my breakfast. This coach is......... aahhh forget it. I have to keep this board clean.

The only school on his list of favorites without a verballed QB is Clemson. He was really liking UK, but you almost have to wonder if all those other schools having verballed QBs has him thinking a little more about the Tigers.

Wouldn't be much of a surprise to see him commit to UK anyway, though. You could say the same for Purdue and IU.

Top quarterback Morgan Newton to decide Tuesday
ESPNU 150 member Morgan Newton will make his announcement at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Indiana, Purdue, Clemson, Florida, Illinois and Kentucky are the coveted signal-caller's final schools.
Only the Clemson Tigers of Newton's finalists do not already have a quarterback pledge for the Class of 2009.

Newton threw for 1,883 yards and 25 touchdowns while also rushing for 750 yards and 11 more scores last fall for Carmel, Ind., the No. 22-ranked team in the ESPNRISE.com Fab 50.

Newton down to the wire with decision
Posted by Mark Ambrogi

Carmel senior quarterback Morgan Newton downplayed a published report that stated there was a controversy in the family over what college choice he should announce on Thursday.

A Columbia (S.C.) State report said his mother Rubie's favorite was Clemson and that father John had another favorite and Morgan had still another favorite.

"Everyone has their own opinion about things," Newton said. "They're (his parents) definitely the people I listen to because the football stuff. They know what is best for me. So it's something we listen to. As far these schools, my parents have been pretty nice with me and let the choice be mine."

The big game is Saturday. I'm surprised he won't commit on Friday or on Saturday pre-game.

I live in southern Indiana right across from Kentucky. Kentucky seems to think there getting him but they usually are wrong.

very doubtful since they have Mossakowski, I really don't see Newton picking them

Clemson has yet to get a QB in this class. So i still say Newton goes with Clemson, say 55% sure of that, I give the other 45% to IU. Would love to see him stay in state

I suck. I'm done trying to predict where these lads will end up. I'll just sit back and enjoy the show for now on

A little birdie told me he still may commit to UK, even though they just signed Mossakowski. He will commit on EPSN soon. Personally hard for me to fathom, but would be great for the Cats. Moss may get drafted in the MBL, so that may be what's up, though he says he's football first. We'll see when he gets that first MLB contract thrown his way.

Why all the love for Marv and none for me? ^^ Okay, my little birdie talked to Morgans dad, so I kinda knew all along. The family was just throwing other teams out there for a little suspense. I'm getting good at this, sine I called Mossakowski to UK as well! :nanana:

Game-changer: Morgan Newton rambles toward the end zone, giving Carmel a 27-21 lead over Cathedral late in the fourth quarter.

CARMEL, Ind. -- One reason ESPN chose to televise Saturday's Cathedral-Carmel high school football game was the star power of Carmel senior quarterback Morgan Newton.

In the first half, it looked as if Cathedral junior quarterback Kofi Hughes would steal the spotlight.

The Class 5A No. 1 Greyhounds, led by Newton, rebounded to score the game's final three touchdowns and top 4A No. 1 Cathedral 28-21 in a season opener before an estimated crowd of 8,000.

"They made some big plays in the first half, but in the end we made more plays," Newton said.

Hughes, in his varsity debut, threw a 33-yard touchdown pass and ran 68 yards for another score to help Cathedral grab a 21-7 lead in the first half. Newton tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to narrow the deficit to 21-14 at halftime.

Newton scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, and a Zach Broadbent kick tied the score with 11:24 left in the fourth quarter. Newton followed that by scoring from 18 yards out with 5:40 left, giving the Greyhounds a 27-21 lead. Ryan Rhoades' kick made it 28-21.

Newton, who announced Thursday he plans to play for Kentucky next season, completed 16-of-21 passes for 194 yards and ran for 89 yards on 20 carries.
