ND just landed another right hook on Lloyd & Co.
For anyone keeping track at home, thats at least 9 UM offers that picked Notre Dame instead:
QB Dayne Crist - not like they had much of a chance, but they liked him enough.
TE Kyle Rudolph - they honestly had no chance here. If it wasn't ND, it'd be OSU.
WR John Goodman - had ND written all over him, but they liked him nevertheless.
OL Lane Clelland - was supposedly a UM lean, then surprised everyone.
OL Braxston Cave - do you really think they'd prefer Rocko Khoury (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=162&p=8&c=1&nid=2874237)?
DL Omar Hunter - the biggest upset by far. Went from nearly verballing to UM the day he was offered by them, to ending up with Corwin. Ouch.
LB Darius Fleming - they visited the kid, and the only other school to show that much interest was (take a wild guess... :D)
DB Robert Blanton - 3 years of camping with the Wolverines, only to verbal at ND's campus during the 4th.
DB Jamoris Slaughter - he liked 'em as a kid, but he's Irish now.
And who did Michigan snare away from ND?
Brandon Moore... who verballed after ND wrapped things up with Rudolph and Fauria in the fold at TE, and stopped recruiting him. :p
They'll probably get theirs at some point, but right now, we're knockin' 'em dead. If it were isolated incidents, or if it were neck and neck, thats one thing. But we're talking about guys that camped there three years, childhood fans of the program, guys that were leaning towards UM after visiting both schools. Either the UM recruiting sites are completely full of crap and can't get anything right, or they're just "predominantly" full of crap, and their team is getting out-recruited.
If you're a UM fan trying to spin 9 different instances where ND beat out UM... you're going to get pretty dizzy.
Congrats Jamoris, on picking a great school, for both a 4 year and 40 year decision!

pretty safe to safe that the uncertainty on Carr is hurting them big time.

Don't you just love GBW. If I was a Michigan fan I'd be screaming for their heads. Definitely the worst, and if we get some good news on EJ, that's another nail for them, because of the story earlier this week where it was only scUM & USC for EJ.

I know Blanton & Slaughter are not even close to stepping on the field yet, and you never know, but the one thing that sticks out about both of them, and it's something that can't be taught, is that these guys are both ferocious hitters. Neither one of them would ever be confused with Neon Deion in that regard. If their HS coverage skills can also transfer to the college game, these guys have big time potential at ND, whether it's at Corner or Safety. I think one of them has to end up as a Safety because they will both most likely be playing the same 4 years as Gary Gray, and Gray is just too good of a cover corner not to play. Slaughter seems the more likely Safety. Both are nasty, but Slaughter seems to have just a tad more of that Brian Dawkins like meanness. Gray, Blanton, Slaughter, Harrison Smith. What a Defensive Backfield talent wise. By the time these guys are Juniors, ND has the potential to go in 4 years from one of the worst Defensive Backfield's in the country to one of the best.

ESPN's Billy Tucker asked All-American safety Jamoris Slaughter how Notre Dame's Class of 2008 feels about the Irish's 0-3 start. Slaughter brought up several points, all suggesting his fellow commits, specifically defensive tackle Omar Hunter and defensive end Darius Fleming, are still headed to South Bend, Ind.
First, Slaughter said most recruits choose Notre Dame because of the school and education ahead of football.
Secondly, the ESPNU All-American mentioned that several players have suffered through a tough season in high school and aren't necessarily accustomed to winnings.
Additionally, Slaughter stated that his fellow commits have pride in Notre Dame and believe they can right the ship.

I honestly believe that ND pride lacked in our 07 recruiting class. We had very few guys that spoke highly about ND as a school, and it's tradition. I'm not saying we will keep everyone this year but I do think that lack of pride was a big reason ND fell apart nearing signing day, they were all going to ND for the wrong reasons. I'm not saying people don't want to win, but when you go to ND, it's about pride, education, and tradition. Charlie stuck to his word when he said he would recruit guys who wanted to go to ND, ND type of guys. It's shows through our recruits and that's a form of leadership right there. This class is special guys..

OMG rice88 it is pathetic. First things first down here in GA they HATE ND, so everybody here hates a big time GA kid leaving to go up there. Here's the latest crap my brother got the pleasure of hearing; My brother goes to a sports med. place to rehab the ACL he tore. He noticed another HS kid in there wearing Buford gear. So my brother asked if he played with/knew Omar, and the kid said they were friends. My brother then told him he is so happy as a ND fan that Omar is going to ND. The kid tells my brother that Omar wants to decommit and go to SC. He said Omar will do a hat switch on signing day by taking off the ND hatand putting on a SC one.
This is the type of crap we constantly hear down here and I don't buy it for a minute. I almost feel like I shouldn't even post it b/c I don't want anybody to worry about it. I guess I just wanted to give everybody a taste of life down here in UGAy land.

Tough loss for Tucker last night. They were up against Northside which has now won 29 straight games. Surprisingly they were up 28-7 at halftime. The last TD was a fumble scoop and score. Fumble was caused by a super hit by our guy Slaughter. I'm no expert, but I think Slaughter is going to need a year in the weight room before playing at ND.
So Northside put in the Pilsbury Throw Boy in the 2nd half and scored 24 unanswered. They kicked the winning fg w/ 13 seconds left.

Slaughter Grateful and Disappointed
Jamoris Slaughter By Mike Frank
Posted Jan 5, 2008
Tucker, Ga. defensive back Jamoris Slaughter was thrilled to be invited to the UnderArmour All-American Bowl and was putting on a show until he was abruptly sidelined for the game.
Four-star Irish corner prospect Jamoris Slaughter was having a good week early in practices for the UnderArmour all-star game.
"I was playing really well I thought," Slaughter said. "I felt I was going to have a good week."
And then it all ended, rather quickly.

Feel bad for Jamoris.....all that work and then something unfortunate like this happens. However, it could have been worse........

What a bummer. I agree with Richard here. He could have had whatever Greg Oden has that may sideline him for all of next year. Hopefully this won't hurt his play, although I expect him to get a redshirt next year anyways.

I felt from what I saw in the BC game that he should play a lot of safety he has the speed that mcarthy lacks in deep coverage as he often gets there a little late and also has the man to man coverage skills of a corner he I feel a big part of trying to improve our truly awful pass defense. what is great is he is also a sure tackler. How does everyone else feel about this.

I saw some lapses (I can't remember the specific plays), but I thought he generally looked good. It's just a matter of him getting comfortable back there. But that's no small feat with this defense.

I relize he is far from perfect but I feel he will be better for this team on the secondary right now and in the long run. It wouldn't hurt if we had a good pass rush. Although the d line is much better at stopping the run they still lack a cosistant pass rush.

Yep. Our secondary woes is partially the DL's lack of penetration, but having Sgt Slaughter back there def. helps.

And 22 just wasn't doing anything except giving up big plays
ha..yeah thats what 22 seems to do the best. Id like to see him get more and more PT and transition to the full time starter at FS next year.

Those are my thoughts about who should be starting in the 2ndary. Corwin Brown needs to do something good here.

Hs did play better at lb than safety. I think you take him out of his game at the position. Play slaughter and sb there the remainder of the year. Whatever happened to mccarthy's little brother?

Hmmm. I hope they are successful one way or another. Personally I didn't care for it. I heard about this on twitter, which I haven't checked in a while because Darrin Walls wastes my time. I need to unfollow him.

Brian Kelly: #NotreDame S Jamoris Slaughter had a "procedure" done that requires 72 hrs. of no walking as rehab. He is ahead of schedule.
.
I don't know if he will play...I mean if he does, he will def. not be 100%. 72 hrs of now walking...that sounds kind of serious. We need his speed back there. Either way we need a big game from Zeke!

can just be a foot thing. I had an issue with my toenail once and i wasnt allowed to walk for a few days as well.
oh ok. well thats encouraging. the feet/ankles are tough to heal since you almost have to be on them all day long.

The biggest injury news to come out of Tuesday was Kelly's expectation that starting safety Jamoris Slaughter, who missed all of the Sept. 11 Michigan game and played two plays in an emergency role against MSU, will return to the starting lineup.

The best part of that picture is that his arms are wrapped around him. He didn't just try to hit him and knock him down, he made sure he would go down. Good tackle.

Slaughter Cross Training At Corner (http://www.irishsportsdaily.com/football/football-articles/6827-slaughter-cross-training-at-corner)
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – It’s cross training time for Jamoris Slaughter. While most people pay big money for a good cross training session, Slaughter is getting it for free as the safety dabbles in playing cornerback for the Irish during spring practice.
Slaughter ran at cornerback with the number one defense during Wednesday’s practice opposite Bennett Jackson. It is necessitated, at least in part, by the losses at the cornerback position of Gary Gray and Robert Blanton as well as the relative lack of depth at the position.
“You do that, as you know, when you think you’ve got another safety,” Kelly said of sliding Slaughter to corner. “We wanted to wait, and we’re really pleased with (Austin) Collinsworth (at safety). That allows us now to look at some cross training and making sure we get the best four players on the field.”
Collinsworth did indeed run with the number one unit at safety along with Zeke Motta. For now, Slaughter, who took Lo Wood's spot at corner on Wednesday, is not expected to spend extended time at cornerback.
“He is a safety,” co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Kerry Cooks said of Slaughter after Wednesday’s practice. “That has not changed. He’s not going anywhere. We’re trying to develop our young guys and see where those guys are.”
Still, Slaughter, is one of the most “flexible” players that first year Fighting Irish safeties coach Bob Elliott says he has been around. That’s saying something, considering Elliott is in his 34th year as a college football coach, and also considering his former pupils include the likes of current Dallas Cowboy Terrance Newman, who helped Kansas State University set the program’s interception record in Elliott’s time there.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a more flexible guy,” Elliott flatly said of Slaughter. “By that I don’t mean physical flexibility, I mean mental flexibility. He has a grasp of the entire defense, which is unusual. Usually, players will understand their position or maybe their half of the field, and the calls and the defenses on their half. Jamoris understands the whole thing.”
Slaughter’s “flexibility” has allowed him to play both safety positions, nickel back and now cornerback.
Sophomores to be Josh Atkinson and Jalen Brown and junior to be Wood have had their opportunities to prove themselves at the position, but none of them have been able to take hold of those chances so far.
“My expectations of those guys is to play at a championship level nothing else,” Cooks said when asked to assess the depth at the position. “What we have back there is a lot of talent. Bennett and Josh are athletic, fast, strong, physical, long, (and) tough. They are smart players. They can play at a high level, but is my job to get them there.”
“Lo Wood and Jalen, those guys are capable players (and) athletic enough and smart enough players to do the job, but if I am purely talking about an athletic standpoint they are a cut below Bennett and Josh. They are still capable of doing the job though, so my expectations for all the guys is to go out and play winning football.”
After Jackson, Wood has the most experience of any returning cornerback, but the sophomore is on shakier ground than Jackson when it comes to solidifying a starting position. For Wood, Kelly says it is all about “consistency”.
“If I were to boil it down to one thing it’s keep the ball in front of you,” Kelly assessed of where Wood must make the most improvement. “That’s what we’re looking for from that wide corner. He doesn’t have to be brilliant, but he’s gotta defend the post and he’s gotta be able to tackle.”
Wood saw action in 10 games for the Fighting Irish in 2011. He made six tackles, he did return an interception 57 yards for a touchdown in ND’s 45-21 romp of Maryland, but he also had just one pass deflection and no pass break-ups during the season.
Cooks says “making plays on the ball” is the area where Wood has been most inconsistent in practice.
“You would expect now he’s going into year three, he should be competitive for the ball when the ball’s in the air,” Cooks assessed of Wood. “He should be able to fundamentally come up and break-up a ball or make a physical tackle (but) it’s inconsistent.”
Moving Slaughter to cornerback not only gives the veteran “cross training” experience, it also sends a message to players like Wood, Atkinson and Brown to pick up their game.
“I think one thing it does for all those guys is, they know and we communicate that we’re gonna put our best people on the field,” Cooks said when asked how the other corners might take seeing Slaughter line-up in front of them at practice. “I think when they see that happen that red light and that siren goes off and they think ‘I better get on my game or coach Cooks is not gonna play me’.”
Slaughter, who will be a fifth-year senior next season, was a stat stuffer with his all-around play in 2011. He played in all 13 games for the Irish with 10 starts, 45 tackles (tied for seventh), four tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception, two pass break-ups, three pass deflections, and a forced fumble. He did just about everything except sell hot dogs in the concession stand.
“Jamoris has probably been one of our best defensive backs since we have been here,” Cooks said of the recent father. “He continues to show that playing safety and playing nickel. We bumped him out just as an experiment just to see what he could do out that way and again he shows that wherever we put him he is going to be great at it. He is going to excel (because) he is smart.”
“It’s easy for him to line up at a lot of different positions, because he is used to driving it from the safety position so when he moves out to nickel or corner he is at ease with it because he knows exactly what those guys should be doing.”
Having Slaughter work at both cornerback and safety, something former teammate Robert Blanton did as well, also allows the coaching staff to get Austin Collinsworth on the field more.
“It gives us trust when we’re playing certain schemes to maybe move Jamoris down to the nickel or outside linebacker spot and put Austin in and have confidence,” Elliott said.
Collinsworth has predominantly been a special teams performer in his first two seasons at Notre Dame. He was recruited as a wide receiver, but has moved to safety. Irish defensive coordinator Bob Diaco called him a “werewolf” last week, citing his aggressive, intense and enthusiastic play as great assets for someone at the safety position.
“We’re pleased with the cornerback position right now,” Kelly said when asked if Slaughter might be ready to move past Wood on the depth chart at the position. “But if there’s any injury, we wanna be prepared for that…I think we’re really looking more than anything else if there’s an injury.”

I don't care what they say. If Slaughter is training at CB, that means the 1st 4 guys are not doing very well. this is an ill omen.
