He's brought a hot bat to the lineup. He's also brought speed to the middle-to-bottom half of the order.
More than anything, however, freshman centerfielder Golden Tate has brought an attitude to the Notre Dame baseball team (3-3) that is rubbing off on his teammates.
"Seeing Golden play like he has, he's kind of inspired the team," said Irish head coach Dave Schrage, whose squad opened their spring trip at the Papa John's Challenge in Santaluces, Fla., with a 5-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary's, a 6-4 come-from-behind win over St. Bonaventure and a 7-2 loss to Boston College.
"Golden gives us another weapon, which has been exciting."
Tate played a role in all three innings the Irish scored in their 5-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's. He sacrificed Sean Gaston to second base to set up Billy Boockford's run-scoring single in the second. He doubled to open the two-run fourth inning, and he doubled again to start the two-run eighth.
The next day against St. Bonaventure, Tate had three of Notre Dame's 10 hits. He singled, stole second and scored on Cameron McConnell's single in the second. He singled and scored in the sixth on Casey Martin's single to right field.
But that simple description doesn't do justice to Tate's second run scored. He was stealing on the pitch to Martin, and scored all the way from first on the ground ball through the right side of the infield.
"Obviously, he's off to a great start," said Schrage of Tate. "Speed-wise, he's very impressive. He obviously has game-changing speed."
