I see Omar as being a beast. Maybe I'm being optomistic, but this guy has not gotten his just dessets (well-maybe he had a couple). Mark this down, he looks to me like someone who will get some quality time as early as sophomore year.

He's the spitting image of a 3-4 NT prospect. Both him and Newman, its great. I know the competition he has faced is usually too afraid to give a serious effort in blocking him, but man is he talented. He's just what the doctor ordered at NT. This was huge, literally, and figuratively, what with the UM upset and what it does for our class... it turned some heads for sure.

Rivals now has Omar as running a 4.7
Hmmm we thought Patchan was an athletic freak for running a 4.7, well it just seems more impressive that Omar already weighing 300 pounds has done just that. I gotta beleive theres not a DT better than him in the country and the only thing holding back rankings wise is more film and not being tall enough.

If memory serves there was another guy that played at ND that everyone said was too short and look how he turned out! Chris Zorich! I don't see that 6'1" is too short, if anything play NT at that height might give him more leverage on the trees on the OL. I would love to see Brewster try and block him! Ain't gonna happen boys! This guy is gonna be great! That 5th star is comin' this year!

me too, i dont think being tall is what you want in a 3-4 NG re: the leverage thing. occupy the C/G, fill up space, and let the LB's blow it up. 6'1 3 bills running a 4.7 will do just fine...

All of the news you here about the commits we've gotten on def. is gettin very exciting. Can't wait to get to see them next year on the field. And I think the def. this year will be improved . If they play very well this year, can we start to imagine the kids lining up to play for Corwin and the Irish.

Hunter logged plenty of time getting back into shape for his final prep season, trimming his 40-yard dash time to an even 4.7, increasing his bench press to 425 pounds and topping out his squat at 475 pounds. Hunter said doctors gave him the green light two weeks ago, but it's still a long journey back to football shape after a rehab that was often limited to swimming.

Buford’s Omar Hunter recently set a school record by bench pressing 415 pounds.
Hunter has his teammate T.J. Pridemore to thank. Without Hunter knowing, Pridemore slipped a couple of five pound weights onto the bar before the big fellow attempted the lift.
The news wasn’t all good for Hunter, though. A recent MRI revealed that the Notre Dame commitment has a slight tear in meniscus in his right knee.
Hunter doesn’t expect it to be an issue during the regular season.

It's really not that bad of an injury as long as he gets it taken care of and makes sure it heals right. I should know, I've torn the meniscus in both of my knees, along with quite a few other injuries to go along with it in my left knee.

"I hope I can come in and get some playing time right off the bat, but I'm going to have to work hard for that."
His 415-pound bench press is a school record and his 450-pound squat and 325-pound power clean aren't bad either considering he's been in rehabiliation for a broken leg all summer. And just for good measure, Hunter runs a 4.73-second 40-yard dash, which he attributes to his background as a running back.

Grove City (Ohio) vs. Buford (Ga.) 11:30 A.M.
The Greyhounds struggled last year as they finished 4-6. Grove City opened up the season last weekend against Worthington Kilbourne and they found themselves on the wrong end of a 28-0 score. Quarterback Elijah Smurthwaite completed 23 of 40 passes for 305 yards. His main target was Robbie Grooms who caught eight balls for 135 yards in a losing effort.
Buford won 12 straight games last season prior to losing in the third round of the state playoffs and they should be a serious contender to win it all this year. The Wolves defense is led by defensive tackle Omar Hunter a Notre Dame commitment and linebacker T.J. Pridemore who is headed to Georgia Tech. The offense is led by running back Demtrius Murray a South Florida pledge and Tyler King his lead blocker at full back.
Prediction: Buford 35, Grove City 7

After Big Omar had 3 sacks for Buford in the Herbie Classic game he received over 100 phone calls from other colleges including Florida, Michigan, Georgia, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Auburn. A virtual plethora of scumbags, ah, but that is CFB recruiting. Omar says that he is 100% committed to ND and he seems to find the attention somewhat amusing.

If we ND was playing well, other NCAA coach's would just use some other issue against ND, from stupid shit such as ND's lack of diversity (my fav), to lack of a social scene (another personal fav).
There will always be negative recruiting, it is up to the kids to either ignore it, or go and visit. I agree with what Charlie said this past National Signing Day, you can't get mad at the coach's, they are just doing their job, it is all on the kids to either A) be true to their word and honor their committment or B) go back on their word and go and visit a school.
Let's not forget that ND got a couple kids just last year that verbaled to other schools in Gray and Smith. Its all part of the game, but as of right now, I can't see any of our present committs going back on their word.

Notre Dame-bound Hunter offered by the USC Trojans
When Pete Carroll talks, recruits listen. Even ones already committed to Notre Dame.
Buford’s Omar Hunter visited with Carroll over the phone Tuesday and received an offer from the coach of top-ranked Southern Cal.
“It was pretty exciting. Southern Cal, that’s pretty big,” said Hunter, who verbally committed to Notre Dame in June.
That doesn’t mean the blue-chip defensive tackle has changed his mind about heading to South Bend.
“I’m sticking with Notre Dame for right now,” Hunter said.
Buford coach Jess Simpson said several schools, including Florida, Tennessee and Auburn, still contact Hunter, who is ranked as the sixth best defensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com and the No. 78 prospect overall.
The 6-0, 300-pound Hunter, who can dunk a basketball, leads No. 1 Buford with 19 quarterback pressures and three forced fumbles.

I also think Corwin is key. If Rick Minter was on the sidelines next weekend, I'm pretty sure we'd see a bunch of guys jump ship, and Omar would be one of them.

FWIW, I agree with Marv that the 'for now' comment relates to the earlier interview where Omar said that as long as Weis is the coach he is still committed.
I don't believe that Omar is wavering, but let's say for argument's sake that he is. The guy is a terrific player, but if the current adversity would sway him from coming, than he was never really 'committed' anyways.
Going off topic here, but I see this as comparable to situation with the US Men's basketball team and the woes/embarrassment on the international stage. After the last several years of dismal results, some guys were gun-shy about playing - they didn't want to be associated with losing. Those are the types of guys that Coack K DOESN'T/SHOULDN'T want; he wants the guys that WANT to play and bring back the pride.
You want the guys who want the ball in their hands in the last seconds; you want the FG kicker who wants to have to make the 40yd FG with under a minute to play and the team down by 2pts; you want Kirk Gibson, injured and barely able to walk - but wanting to pinch hit to win the series.
You don't want guys that say, "sh1t, the team is not doing so well, maybe I'll go somewhere esle". Those guys were already somewhere else.
I don't believe that Omar is one of 'those' guys. But, that is just my opinion

No, "Cholly Does Not Pull the Scholly", (I like that) it's the "if you're looking, we're looking policy", which means that if CW is true to his word, any confirmation of a Hunter Official Visit should be met with a new offer going out to a Defensive Lineman.

heard something about him going to a georgia game, which wouldn't be a terribly big deal since the rumor is he would be going with buddies. The USC visit was started by a USC fan on scouts free board, so take it for what it is worth
If true, fine, Weis or someone should get on the phone as soon as that is confirmed and have a nice conversation with Mr Kabongo and ask him if he is still interested in an offer from ND.
Personally, I would be a tad shocked if this rumor of an official to usc is true given his comments on tuesday, if it is, time to put the recruiting philosophy to work

How true are the rumors about visiting UF,GA and USC? I hope it's not true. I can't find any info. All I found was that he still strong on ND.
You may as well get used to it, because like it or not, as long as the Irish football team is struggling and consistently losing games by double digit plus margins, there will be numerous rumors, some unfounded, some true, about probably every single ND verbal with the exception of Golic Jr. If the season continues as it has in the first 4 weeks, we should all also be prepared to lose some of those 19 verbal commits. I have seen all of these articles pop up in the last few weeks about how the current status of the team does not affect committed or potentially committed recruits. I do not subscribe to this theory because it has in fact shown to be not the case on numerous occassions in the last few years. All of these recruits see what is going on all over the country and this constant exposure to the media barrage can not help but affect all but the most die hard ND recruits. Unfortunately ND is hurt the most with recruits by poor on field performances because the Irish do not have the built in advantage of being a Home State U. All we can hope for is that the vast majority of those who have already verballed take their promises to CW seriously and maintain their committment to Notre Dame, and that the football program makes it a little easier on them by playing better on the field. There is little we can do about those that break those promises except exhibit the normal angst that accompanies such actions. Let's all just hope that the angst will be kept to a minimum between now and NSD.

Losing him would be more significant than any recruit we could gain in these final 3 1/2 months of recruiting.

Speaking of message board angst, someone is attributing Lemming to saying that Omar may take some visits, but it is unclear whether this is something that Lemming spoke of when he first heard about USC offering Big Omar, or it is a more recent development. In any case, be prepared to hear a lot about Big Omar wavering from all of the pundits. That does not mean that he is, or that he will be, but Big Omar, unlike Dayne Crist, is probably the most vulnerable verbal commit that ND has both because of his continued climb up the recruiting boards and his location. Despite all of this, and FWIW, a source who is pretty close to the Omar situation, and is also usually very reliable says that as of now, Omar is solid as a rock for ND.

Warning: Lengthy
Well I should have figured first based on Buford's record in their soft region and the other team only having 18 players (half couldn't make a 6th grade team) that it would be a short night for Omar.... and it was. He played only a few series and my little bro and I left 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter as Buford was up 40ish to nothing and Omar was nowhere near his helmet.
As for Omar. I went to the game first to see our future Zorich, and also to show one of my little brothers who plays DT what a ND caliber DT looks like. Omar definitely showed my bro how to do it. If playing QB for many years did one thing for me it helped me to identify good defensive players, and Omar is the real deal. First things first he's one of those guys where when he gets in his stance you can just see he is going to fire out fast, hard, and low. When the ball is snapped he's real quick off the ball, he keeps his pad level real low, and has surprisingly quick feet. First play of the game he nailed the RB a split second after he took the handoff. I couldn't believe how fast he got back there. Every play after that he was being double and once triple teamed. Despite this he just missed another TFL, stayed low and got through every time, and chased ball carriers sideline to sideline. I was laughing my ass of when I noticed on one play the guard was trying so hard to get lower then Omar he almost looked like an Ostrich trying to bury his head in the ground.
My brothers play in the Peachtree Ridge program 8th and 9th grade so we went to see Cameron Heyward (son of Ironhead) play a few times last year. Cameron is a freshman DT for Ohio St. this year and playing. I can say without a doubt Omar is a lot more polished from a technique perspective then Cameron was. Cameron would rely on his size, Omar uses his technique and then punishes with his size. I'm very excited to see this kid play at ND.
IUB and Mike J you got some damn good sources. As my brother and I were walking out I noticed a stout man at the top corner talking on a treo decked out in a ND Jacket and hat.... I knew right away it was CB! I waited for him to get off the phone to work up the go nads to approach him and luckily he actually came down the exit towards us. He is an unbelievably nice and polite man. Unfortunately I didn't get stonebreaker's questions so my brief conversation was taking his pic with my lil bro and telling him that he was one of two DT's we'd be sending his way and then when taking his pic with me I reminded him that his hit on Keyshawn was the greatest.... he got a kick out of that. I answered his question on where to catch Omar headed to the locker room, shook hands again, and told him good luck the rest of the year and that we are all proud of him. Of course there where a million things I'd love to talk to him about and ask him, but I didn't want to be that guy.
In closing, I really feel good about getting Omar now. CB's the man, he used the bye week to see Omar (and probably Jamoris) and that should show Omar how much he means to ND.
In other news...... I immediately called my buddy I played with in college who now coaches line at Loyola in L.A. as he was headed witht he team to take on our boys at Sherman Oaks. I told him to threaten to bench any kid that hits Dayne! He mentioned he met Polian today as I'm sure Polian is trying to get in good with the staff for a sophomore stud running back they have now who is the son of a former ND running back.

Don't know for sure, but I think the trip was mostly to check in with Big Omar & Sgt. Slaughter. There is a lot of Junior talent on both Tucker and Buford anyway.

I hope the present ND O-Line sees this video. This is how you get off the ball, drive your legs and shove the defender 5-10 yards down the field.
Defensively, this young man is a WALL!!! He does an excellent job jamming the offensive line charge, uses his hands well to fight off blocks and maintaining his pads parallel to the lie of scrimmage. Teams that are foolish enough not to block him with 2 players will not be able to run the ball 4 feet on either side of him. Like most young D-Lineman, Omar will need to work on his pad level(he looks too high) and improve his foot speed.

Omar received his 5th star today from Scout. A new Scout 100 is out as well.
eric_navy
12-17-2007, 01:43 PM
To compensate for the addition of Omar's 5th star, somebody lost one. I have lost track of who has how many. Filer now has four and had five at one time. Also, Brandon Newman now has three but had 4 at one point. Bottom line, I think Scout has decided that our average is to remain exactly 4.0. Anyway, awesome for Omar; it's about time.

12-17-2007, 01:56 PM
i am not sure where i read it but the NG (middle man) in the 3-4 defense (Omar's position) is pretty much the key to running the whole thing.
it was a very insightful write up about the 3-4 defense saying how if you dont have that big guy in the middle of the d-line, occupying 2 guys on every play so the ILB's can do their thing, then behind him all the schemes break down. this is why of all the 22 so far OH is the most important recruit we have IMO.
irishunclebill
12-17-2007, 01:56 PM
Newman is the one who lost a star on this most recent update. Filer had lost his 5th star a while back on Scout. Rudolph, Hunter, Crist, EJ, and Floyd are the current Scout 5 stars. Rivals is coming out with a new R100 on Friday, I would not be surprised if Omar picked up a 5th star there as well.

From reading the tea leaves, it appears that the ND staff is fully aware of this. The new CW policy is "if they are looking, we are looking." This will be the first real test of that policy, but my understanding of it is that ND will immediately look to fill Omar's spot, but not immediately take away his schollie. However, if they offer a Kabongo now and he accepts on the spot, or if they get a commit from someone at that slot who has already been offered, then they would rescind Omar's schollie offer.

I'm going to move this over from the Omar Hunter rumor thread as it is now even more appropriate.
My advice to you is that even if you actually have one of those fears confirmed that you just stay away from the ledge anyway. For one thing, all of the angst in the world on the ND message boards will not change a thing. Also, if any of the 22 current verbals take an Official Visit elsewhere, they may not have broken a contract with CW, but they have broken a compact. I fully expect that if that happens that CW will immediately react by offering that recruits slot to another candidate, and if the new candidate accepts the offer, then the guy who is taking the visit will be gone. These 22 guys knew the rules when they verballed to Charlie, so any one of them who takes an Official Visit elsewhere fully realizes that his ND scholarship is in serious jeopardy. In point of fact, in most cases if a guy who has committed to one school takes an Official Visit to another school in January, then he is most likely gone anyway. CW learned that the hard way last January, and I do not think that he will repeat that mistake this year.

The visit is in his Rivals profile, which really does not mean a lot because they still have Deion Walker listed as visiting Texas Tech last weekend. However, the information that I have seen indicates that he has definitely made plans to make the visit, and the ND coaching staff will be working very hard in the next three weeks to change his mind. All is not lost here because they could very well persuade him not to go, but if he does eventually hop on a plane for Gainesville on 1/10, I would not be too confident that he will remain Irish.

We've had this discussion before and we will have it agian until signing day. The one thing everyone needs to do is relax. Is Omar a top recruit ? Yes. His he are only top recruit ? No. Charlie and this staff have gotten commits from top players at every position. Would I like to see Omar at N.D. ? Yes, but I'm not going to jump off a tall building if he doesn't. I realize alot of people think Omar is the most important commit we have, I disagree. I think the most important commit is all 22 of them. You know Aaron Taylor said it very well when he stated that for a team to become a top team the recruits of each class have to bond together and play as a team not as individuals. The last two classes appear to be on that page and the commits we have so far also seem to be on that page. So lets hope everything works out with all 22 commits not worry about just one.
