If Luatua turned out to be a no-show, Alize Jones could have earned the distinction of top tight end. The 6-4 and 212-pound sophomore impressed from start to finish. He does not have any offers at this stage of the game. Several Pac-12 Conference schools have expressed interest.

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. – The Los Angeles Nike Camp showcased some of the top west coast talent in the class of 2014 on Sunday but it also revealed some new faces that will soon become household names in the class of 2015. On the offensive side of the ball, we take a look at the days top performers, led by three big-time arms.

Top 10

8. Alize Jones, TE, Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman (Class of 2015) – As a rising junior at the Georgia Nike Camp in the spring of 2011, O.J. Howard had an eerily similar combination of size and athleticism as that of what Jones showed on Sunday. Over the next two years, Howard became one of the nation’s most highly-recruited tight ends and ultimately signed with Alabama. I’m predicting a similar fate for Jones with regard to his recruitment. At 6-4, 215 pounds, he’s extremely well-constructed and showed outstanding athleticism and ball skills. Remember the name.

Last weekend, 247Sports analysts Keith Niebuhr and Barton Simmons saw an abundance of talent at the Los Angeles Nike Football Training Camp, VTO Prep 100 Alabama and VTO Prep 100 Georgia.

Many of the top prospects from those events will be signing with colleges next February.

But others that impressed still have two or three years left of high school.

Here are some of the 2015s and 2016s that caught our eyes at those events.

Alize Jones, TE, Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman (2015, L.A. Nike) -- The 6-feet-4, 212-pounder has a fantastic tight end body and tested well Sunday. He looked extremely natural in drills and during competition. Jones reminds us of five-star 2013 Alabama tight end signee O.J. Howard at this stage.

Most think he'll ultimately be Irish, but it's a little concerning that he hasn't at least de-committed at this point.

One of the top targets for Notre Dame is the Class of 2015 has officially announced that he will now be a part of the Notre Dame Class of 2015.

Talented pass catcher Aliz’e Jones (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) decommitted from UCLA this afternoon and almost immediately flipped his commitment to Notre Dame.

Jones is the nation’s top tight end and has been a longtime target for the Irish. He has visited Notre Dame multiple times during the past two years.

The four-star prospect was impressed with the academic opportunities that Notre Dame presents for him.

“The academics, I really like that,” said Jones. “I like how they run their system. I got really close to the coaching staff.”

Notre Dame being known as “Tight End U” didn’t hurt in this recruitment either.

“They’re just consistent every year and they have proof of it, it just shows me what I’ll be doing there,” he said. “I like it. They do a lot of different things with their tight ends, they put their hands down and put them out wide. I like it.”

We will have more on the huge commitment for the Irish later.

Here is Irish Sports Daily’s Bryan Driskell on Jones:

“I have no problem admitting when I am wrong. I said that players like Tyler Eifert only come along once in a great while. When I said that, I did not consider two seasons to be a great while. Then came Aliz’e Jones. Jones has a game that is very much like Eifert. He’s long, athletic, has a great frame and is a tremendous ball catcher. He has just as much wide receiver to his game as he does tight end.

On top of that, Jones has one of the best pair of hands I have seen in a very long time. He’s a fluid athlete with very good speed for his size, but what separates him is his tremendous agility and fluidity, which is rare for a tight end. Jones also has the ability to make plays after the catch, which is rare for a tight end. Despite being surrounded by other talented players, Jones has still managed to rack up 76 reception for 1501 yards (19.8 ypc) and 23 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He needs to get stronger as an edge blocker and continue to fill out his frame, which is the only thing keeping him from being a 5-star player right now.”

Driskell had Jones ranked as the No. 1 player on the board for Notre Dame, ahead of players like Iman Marshall and Ronald Jones.

Aliz’e Jones, TE, 6-5, 220, Bishop Gorman High School, Las Vegas, NV committed to UCLA earlier in the process and remained committed to them until Thursday, January 15th when he switched his commitment to Notre Dame. It was a long recruiting process for the Irish to finally win Jones over. It was an equally arduous journey for the four-star tight end.

“It’s been a long, long process for him,” said new Bishop Gorman head coach Kenny Sanchez. “It was a hard process for him.”

Jones’ decision was less of a commentary on the Bruins than an affirmation of Notre Dame.

“He feels like it’s a weight lifted off his shoulders that he doesn’t have to worry about anymore,” Sanchez shared. “He really respects the coaches at UCLA, but he just feels like Notre Dame is the place where he should go to school.”

Sanchez said that Jones’ decision had much to do with the similarities between Bishop Gorman and Notre Dame.

“When you go to the Notre Dame campus, it’s got a glow about it,” Sanchez said. “Coming from Bishop Gorman and the faith-based education that we have, they kind of go hand in hand together. We’ve had a lot of kids go there. We have Ronnie Stanley who is there right now as an offensive tackle who’s had a great time. That’s someone he can talk to when he goes there. Obviously, Nico Fertitta, who committed to Notre Dame, they’re really good friends.”

While the educational environment was attractive to Jones, he also liked how the Irish use their tight ends. Notre Dame has a long tradition of sending tight ends to the NFL.

“They run a pro-style offense with the tight end,” Sanchez explained. “A lot of spread teams now don’t run a traditional tight end set all of the time, although they do have formations when they do it. That’s what he wants to play. He wants to be a tight end who gets dirty as well as run routes and catching balls.”

Sanchez believes that Notre Dame got a very good player but that there’s much more than just his performance on the field that will eventually endear him to Irish fans.

“Well, besides that he’s 6-4, 230 pounds and runs a 4.6, he’s one of the hardest workers we had all year,” Sanchez said. “He never missed a practice, he never missed a workout. He gets good grades. He’s never been a problem on or off the field. The teachers and the community love him around here. They’re going to get exactly that, a hard worker, a non-complaint person and someone who is going to be right for the brand.”

Alizé Jones declared ineligible for the season

One of Notre Dame’s candidates for a breakout season won’t see the field this year. Rising sophomore Alizé Jones has been declared ineligible, an assumed academic casualty just days before training camp is set to begin.

The news comes from Notre Dame’s sports information department, who released the following via social media:

— Michael Bertsch (@NDsidBertschy) August 3, 2016

Jones released the following statement via Twitter:

“Notre Dame is a special place and playing football for the Irish is a privilege. With this opportunity comes academic responsibility, and unfortunately, I didn’t meet that responsibility.

“I love Notre Dame and everything about it. Obviously, I’m disappointed at myself, but I’m going to make the best of this situation. I’m going to remain a student at Notre Dame and work even harder. I’m going to grow from this. I’m going to be a better student, teammate, player and man. While I won’t be able to help my brothers on Saturdays, I’ll do whatever I can to help this team achieve its goal of winning a national championship.

It’s a surprising jolt to a very ho-hum offseason, especially after Brian Kelly’s last update stated that all seemed quiet on the academic front. But the loss of Jones forces the staff to pivot and look for a replacement to the sophomore presumed productivity, either at tight end or the boundary receiver position.

Brian Kelly will address the media on Friday to kick off fall camp, when we’ll likely hear more about Jones’ suspension. The Irish welcome back tight end Tyler Luatua to go along with Durham Smythe and Nic Weishar, but cross-trained Jones at Corey Robinson‘s spot at the boundary receiver position after Robinson retired due to concussions.

Jones led all of Notre Dame’s returning pass catchers in yards per reception in 2015, catching 13 passes for 190 yards. He was one of the nation’s top tight end recruits when he picked Notre Dame after being committed to UCLA.
