Wedding party helps Irish recruit
Posted: Tuesday June 26, 2007 10:09AM ET
Cretin-Derham Hall (Minn.) receiver Michael Floyd was at Notre Dame as part of a summer unofficial visits tour with his mother. When he stepped into the Irish's football stadium, he encountered some Notre Dame alumni who had paid about $3,000 to have a wedding picture taken there. The wedding party noticed Floyd and began cheering and clapping, and pleading with him to play for Notre Dame.

Floyd has trimmed the list of schools that he is considering to the 9 schools listed in his Schools of Interest. The general consensus seems to be that Notre Dame, Florida, and Minnesota will be his final three, but if that does happen it won’t be for a lack of effort on the part of OSU & Michigan who are both heavily recruiting Floyd.

Lost in all of today’s craziness is the fact that the two current top recruits on the ND Offensive & Defensive offered list, Michael Floyd & Ethan Johnson, are spending 3 complete days together at the current ND camp. Floyd’s appearance for all three days is a change in plans for him from just two weeks ago when he was planning on just stopping for the day at ND on two different occasions. Having these two top recruits spend that much time together on the ND campus can do nothing but help Notre Dame's prospects with both of these 5 star recruits.

I will leave you with one note for the next week, it may not happen while I am gone, but please note that Marv & I have not changed our avatars.

Everyone have a great 4th of July. Happy Birthday America!

I think I'm a little crusty around the edges tonight after failing to fall asleep after two separate attempts, but I'll go ahead and post anyways.

I was looking up Minnesota boards, to gage fan optimism about their odds at Michael Floyd. Apparently the only guy who is optimistic about it (at least publicly) is Tim Brewster.

That said, I noticed that the b-ball boards got a lot more traffic - close to 4X as much with the scout board. I found this thread, and laughed out loud when I compared it to the ND online community. If you want a chuckle, browse through this lively chatter - really makes you appreciate what ND fans have got going:

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=176#S=176&F=1102&T=538625

Anywho, it feels good to know that virtually everyone else has conceded Floyd. The only potential players I see for some epic derailing are UF and OSU, but even including OSU is a pretty big stretch. I'm with IUB on this one.

Relax boys its going to be so damn hot in Fl next week that he's going to sweat his b*lls off. This week it's been in the upper 90s with a heat index of over 100, next week even worse. The weather works on a progressively nastier scale here in good ol' Florida. So them hotties are going to be meltin' like a snowcone in Phoenix!!! Rock-on-Irish!!!

Well, I've been following the Floyd recruitment since the very first blurb on him in the local St. Paul newspaper and throughout the entire process the only school that has remained constant is Notre Dame.

While that certainly isn't a smoking gun by any means, the fact that Notre Dame often gets mentioned in other school articles leads me to believe we've long been the leader for his services and he's just doing his due dilligence before committing.

I look for this to wrap up soon, possibly after his visit to Florida. If he doesn't come to Notre Dame, good luck to the kid wherever he ends up -- I think he's handled his recruitment with class and dignity.

Certainly not Sweatesque.

Gophers fall on Floyd's list after unofficial visit

Cretin-Derham Hall wide receiver Michael Floyd, considered the state's best high school recruit, said the University of Minnesota has "dropped a notch" on his list after a disappointing unofficial visit to the campus last month.

Expressing concern about the "atmosphere" and about the talent level of the defensive backs who would challenge him in practice at Minnesota, Floyd told the Pioneer Press today that his top four choices are Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Minnesota, he said, is in the second tier with Iowa and Wisconsin.

Floyd, who also took unofficial visits last month to Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State, said, "It was just so different when I went to those places. It wasn't what I expected at the U. I didn't like some of the people I met. Some people said they really wanted me to come. Other people I met just seem to be saying it."

As for the defensive backs, Floyd said, "I'm looking for more competition, people that can make me better. I want to go up against better DBs in practice everyday."
Last season, the Gophers allowed 268.2 yards passing per game and ranked 117th out of 119 NCAA Division I programs in pass defense.

Landing Floyd, ranked No. 52 nationally among seniors and No. 8 among wide receivers by web siterivals.com, would be a major coup for new Gophers head coach Tim Brewster. Floyd emphasized that he likes Brewster and his staff and that his concerns about Minnesota had nothing to do with them.

"I think Brewster is a great guy," Floyd said. "I know he's working hard to bring people in and build up the program."

NCAA rules prohibit Brewster and his assistants from commenting on Floyd until he signs a national letter of intent in February.

Floyd had 63 catches last season for 1,240 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is the first Minnesota football player to earn a Rivals top 100 ranking since former Cretin star and current Twins catcher Joe Mauer was ranked No. 2 overall as a quarterback in 2001.

What I do not understand, what was so wrong about his comments? He praised the coaches, but if you walk around say UofH you would absolutely get the same reaction from students. If wants to get better, not saying how great he is. the only way you get better is going up better competition, even in practice. That is all he said he wanted. Sorry the truth hurts to UMinn but facts are facts.

Floyd was supposed to go to Gainesville on Friday Night Lights weekend which starts July 20. He was not scheduled to participate in the Friday Night Lights workout anyway, and the free GatorBait post that I am linking does not list his name as an attendee. It's kind of interesting that they do not at least mention that he will be in town for the weekend, but they may be focusing on the attendees.

It would be nice if Floyd decided that going to a bar-b-q in Gainesviile in the middle of July is not such a great idea. On the other hand, I'd rather see him at one of Urban's love fests in the middle of July than the middle of January.

I'm not sure that I can handle any more good news today. Oh, forgot, yes I can today just started.

Anyway, Mike Floyd will not only be skipping Urbie's Friday Night Lights festivities this weekend, he is apparently also skipping the trip to Gainesville completely, and has no further plans to visit anywhere this summer. Waiting for some more confirmation on this, but I like it.

Anywho, the Devil's advocate thought here is he doesn't visit UF now, but waits for an official visit in the fall. So this isn't exactly a bullet-proof sign of good news (as IUB alluded to, by mentioning he wanted confirmation surrounding the news), but 'til then I like the way that he's changing his tune. I just hope that the sound of this run away train's whistle is too alluring for Floyd to wait much longer.

Floyd has Notre Dame and Ohio State out front:

Cretin-Derham Hall receiver Michael Floyd said that of the seven schools he's still considering, Notre Dame and Ohio State have emerged from the pack and that he's taking a wait-and-see approach with the Gophers.

Floyd, one of the nation's top receivers, said recently that he narrowed his list to Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. But it appears he's moving closer to a decision.

Notre Dame has long been rumored as Floyd's top choice, but he denied rumors that he's already given the Irish a silent verbal. He is hoping to take an official visit when Notre Dame plays host to USC on Oct. 20.

"I really like their coaches," he said. "They're real cool guys. They're real, not fake toward you. Some coaches [in recruiting] try to be something they're not."

Floyd said he also liked what he saw on his unofficial visit to Ohio State last month. He reiterated that he still is considering Minnesota but wants to see how the Gophers do in coach Tim Brewster's first season.

Floyd said he might follow the advice of his advisers and stop giving interviews on recruiting once his season starts.
"I want the focus to be on the team and us having a good season," he said.

Not long ago maybe four months, if Dan Buckner commits to us instead of Texas we wouldn't have this debate over Floyd because he would've already been on board...

I think for him to be EE would be ideal. You have to think that CW wants a guy with Floyd's talent in the system as soon as humanly possible. Get that spring under his belt and man look out college football in the fall.

80 is taken by Richard Jackson and he's only a sophomore.

80 Jackson, Richard Wide Receiver 6-2 195 Sophomore
82 Parris, Robby Wide Receiver 6-4 185 Sophomore
83 Ragone, Mike Tight End 6-4 221 Freshman
84 Yeatman, Will Tight End 6-6 255 Sophomore
88 Reuland, Konrad Tight End 6-6 239 Sophomore
89 Carlson, John Tight End 6-6 250 Senior

So he could have 81, 85, 86, 87 or 89 as it will open up before he'd be playing.

To the "scoop" conversation: :D You guys 'n galz (<-- yes, that is an homage to your spelling) are nuts, in a good way.

As for Floyd, I think the way Floyd has handled visits is a positive indicator of ND's status. First, he canceled the FNL visit. If you want a conspiracy, feel free to say that's an indicator that he's silently pledged for the moment, and is adhereing to Weis's no visit policy. That said, Florida is the only school on his list that doesn't fit in with the rest of the picture, so to see them fail to achieve a summer visit bodes well. Keeping this a Midwestern battle is a good thing. Second, many of the quotes about his plans for official visits are open ended. He is not sure how many officials he'll take, maybe 1, maybe 2, maybe 3. Best part about that being, there is currently just one school with an official scheduled: Notre Dame. Thus its pretty clear that he isn't married to any official visit plans.

The tea leaves look like he's leaving the runway wide open for him to land in South Bend whenever he chooses. Could be this summer, could be that he wants to see the Irish in action this year before he pulls the trigger. But when I go back to the conspiracy theorist in me, when I ask myself, "If we don't get him, who does?" I don't come up with anybody.

UM is focused on guys like Baldwin, Smith, and Walker. OSU is focused on guys like Fuller, and Scott. Sure, they're keeping their lure in the lake with Floyd, but they're keeping the best lures in their tackle box for others. So who does that leave? Minnesota? Just read some of the articles from the papers up North for your answer on that one. Florida? Geography kills 'em on this one. And the other schools after that are just window dressings if you ask me. From a "winner by default" view, I still like our odds, very muchso.

I don't think Floyd is seriously considering us right now. We seem to be concentrating on Lamar Thomas(who has Ted Ginn type speed) and Jeff Fuller(who has basically dominated every camp he's gone to, though he seems like he might want to stay close to home).

Maybe Floyd is impressed with our WR pedigree and he is seriously considering us, but I doubt it. We lead for two top 100 receivers in Scott and Thomas, and we already have 2 top 100 receivers in the fold, so we're doing awesome in receiver recruiting.

I heard that Crabtree claims that Ohio State is the team to beat for Floyd with Notre Dame as the darkhorse. LAUGHABLE That may be the worst prediction I've heard this year. All of a sudden ND is the "Darkhorse"? LOL

It's the other way around. Maybe somebody screwed up, but ND is definitely not the darkhorse here.

I'm pretty sure it's Notre Dame as the favorite with Ohio state as the darkhorse. Or maybe he confused Floyd with another Minnesotan that we lead for, Willie Mobley.

Either way, this adds to the reason why I only think Rivals is good at ranking Southern prospects. Anything north of the mason-dixon line and they're clueless.

Just goes to prove my theory that neither Scout nor Rivals has any clue as to what transpires on their boards. Hell Scout has had Aaron Nagels brother listed as having an offer for weeks now. Let me guess it's a small oversite on their part!!! Small my butt!

If that were the case (having an offer), I speculate that he already would have committed.

So yes, I agree.

There seems to be a general consensus everywhere that Floyd is a dreaded "silent commit". However, the specific info you are referencing was originally posted on DD on 7/22. At that time the poster had no idea as to when an announcement might take place, and unfortunately that is the dilemma that seems to face all ND fans at this point as to when Floyd might commit.

i've been hearing rumors that floyd isn't so pro-irish as we thought. i know he wants to wait to see how Minn. does, but has anyone been hearing differently. I have been getting a bad feeling for a couple weeks now. hopefully it's just gas...

irishunclebill

The rumors are that he wants to wait to see how Minnesota does before committing, but those rumors are coming from Minnesota, and may not count for much. On the other hand, one inside source who claims to be connected to the ND coaching staff claims that he has been told that Floyd is not a ND silent commit. That info may be correct, but ask yourself this question, if Floyd really is a ND silent commit why on earth would a member of the ND coaching staff confirm that info one way or the other, kind of defeats the purpose of the recruit's silent commit, and at the same time could very well alienate the recruit.

Another thing you have to consider is that afer his last ND visit he didn't end up going to Florida as he once planned as well as the fact that he didn't schedule any other summer visits with any schools or set up official visits to any other school. To me that could very well indicate that he is commited but he is folling Weis's policy of "if you're looking, we're looking". Maybe he wants to have some fun with it and annouce on a big stage. Who could blame him, most of us like attention like that at some point in our life.

irishunclebill

Good point GG. It's really very simple with Floyd. If he does not visit any other school he is most likely a silent commit, if he does then you know he is not, or at least he is not anymore. That is the beauty of CW's new policy in this regard.

I would not pay much attention to the Minnesota rumors. He was quoted after his visit with some remarks about their CBs and not wanting to even practice vs that level of competition. We'll wait. He'll verbal.

NO. :)

However, the sting from last year is what we're feeling. The longer this plays out the higher the likelihood of him considering other options (Regis:mad:).

Offering Walker is not going to push Floyd. We have offers out to a guy by the name of Baldwin also. We also had a offer to Butler. Those offers didn't seem to push Floyd, why would this offer to Walker?

irishunclebill

Walker's offer has everything to do with Butler, and nothing to do with Floyd.

of course he does because even though we would like to imagine we live in perfect world and ND is on top of their list, floyd and baldwin haven't committed. we haven't heard from odoms and we already lost buckner and alexander. we can't let what happened on signing day last year happen to us again. don't get me wrong, i really hope we land floyd and baldwin and the signs point to ND right now, but until their john hancock states that they are playing for the irish, we can't be too careful.

Agreed. You would think that most kids would take the opportunity to visit some schools in the summer while their schedule is lighter. Since he hasn't visited anywhere, I take that as a positive sign (same with Robinson). Quiet is good.

i really really hope so? does anyone have a theory why we are having trouble landing elite receivers - i know kamara and goodman-(maybe elite) but losing little, benn, butler, austin, etc.

marv81s
08-09-2007, 09:09 PM
me personally, I think Little was a wussy that got cold feet at that last minute, butler is a primadona asshole, benn screwed us, flat out no other way to put it, and went where the money, I mean, where he wanted to be "the man", I don't remember austin (don't want to remember austin is more like it ;))

I am scratching my head and wondering too why WRs ranked as "elite" don't flock to ND either, but from what I am reading on the Net on the reviews of the practices so far this week on the WRs and Duval, and the older WRs, I don't feel all that uncomfortable as I did after watching the spring game.

But we still need Floyd and Baldwin or Deion would be fantastic to say the least.

I take you one step up. I think if Floyd refuses to talk to anyone but Charlie Weis, his mom, and 1 other family member chosen by Weis, then Floyd is Irish.
