I can still remember when Houston Nutt was one of the "Hot" coaches up for the ND job when we hired TW.

Now, does Butch Davis leave NC to go to Arky? I think he will.

UNC just signed Butch to an extension. I think he'll stick around. Arky won't have much when their 2 RBs leave after this year.

Butch also has a buy-out for Arky if the job becomes available and when he signed the extension Nutt was still the coach at Arky. Davis really likes Arky and don't be suprised if he goes there.

Davis has it good at UNC. It's not as tough a gig as the SEC is, and his recruiting hasn't been too horrible lately.

is Mrs. Mustain one of the early favorites for the Arkansas job?

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought Arkansas was having some kind of orgy called a "nut out".
It took me a little while to remember that Nutt was the HC.

The odd part about this story is that he opted out. Arkansas reportedly offered an extension which he turned down. With the BS he's had to swallow, I don't really blame him, but an odd ending to this coaching chapter.

The Ark. fans have had to swallow just as much of his BS, so it's a 2way street. The press (incl. ex-coaches who stick up for their own) has sided w/ Nutt since day one. Nutt has been caught talking out of both sides of his mouth too many times & added way too much drama to a college football program. It was best for both parties that they separate.
If they're smart the Razorback Foundation will pony up enuff cash to buy out Butch Davis. Rumors of Nutt's departure are what led to Butch getting the raise & extension. Butch is from Springdale, AR (just like Mustain, Damian Williams & Bartley Webb!) and DOES have an AR clause in his contract.
If they truly want to rise above the mediocrity that Nutt brought them, they'll do what it takes to get Butch. Nutt is likely to land at Ole Miss or Georgia Tech.
AR offense will be losing all their offensive playmakers to the NFL: McFadden, Felix Jones, Peyton Hillis & Marcus Monk.

Extensions mean nothing.
Todd Graham is one example of this.
He signs a multi-year extension with Rice University last year after getting them to a bowl game. The very same week he agrees to coach Tulsa.

you throw enough millions out there & it'll make those extensions go away real quick. remember football pays the bills at most universities.

that's far from true. many programs don't even make enough to pay for themselves, let alone other sports or areas of the university.
BUT, football, along with basketball, are far and away the most visible college sports, and for right or wrong, a fair amount of prestige is assigned to schools with quality programs in either sport. And that's where you're right - Arkansas has had a taste of the big time and will, in all likelihood, make a heavy investment to take their program to the next level.

often times football is a BIG loser financially for universities.
COSTS are usually higher than revenues.
only the perennial powerhouses really use football priogram as cash cow to finance other things.

Things must have been pretty bad at Arky to opt out of there and take the job at Ole Miss. Orgeron had a rep as a great recruiter at USC and he didn't get much done with the Rebels. Arky will be pretty bad off next year without McFadden and Jones.

Well, there is a pretty large dichotomy amongst the opinions in Arkansas regarding Nutt and that must have contributed some to his decision.

I'm not buying the Razorback party line that this was all Nutt's decision. Don't forget Broyles is leaving and the new AD might have already alerted Nutt to the fact that he was going to want his own guy in charge.

I have an uncle who was living in Arkansas for the last several years and he too says it's a political mess in which there are factions that are passionate on both sides of should Nutt stay or go. Good for Nutt for getting out while the getting is good, if it happened that way.
I would like to point out that I have not stooped to a low level on this thread. The title lends itself, but I didn't. I may have started to type it, but I thought better of it. It's hard... "That's what she said!" In honor of Michael Scott.

This is along the line of thinking I have been following.
However, the AD better have someone lined up already. He doesn't want to pull a Kevin White regarding Urban Meyer debacle.
