title says all. But do we really try to recruit freshman. I think that just seems wierd people who arent even close to college being recruited.the "traditional" recruiting timeline starts after a student's junior football season, it seems, at least for top prospects. i don't think the process can officially start before then. however, some of the larger programs with heavy in-state pipelines, texas and osu being two notable ones, have an idea of who's going to be good sometimes when the kids are still in middle school. also, if kids go to camps and instigate contact, things can happen that way. it's only weis' third year, so i would understand if he hasn't gotten down to freshmen level, but i suspect the staff has been looking at froshs and sophomores while on visits to scout junior and senior recruits.

so, short version: technically, they can't. in a more vague way, they're probably on their way to being there.

I can speak of the local system in my town and how it is done in Catholic schools, which is fading anyway. Churches during lent youe to do thir own fish, beer etc on fridays. These were congregating points for entire famileys. That's where the dads talked to various grade school Coaches and then the High School Coaches visited to 'get the word on a player." Depended upon the skills of a grade school coach teaching a kid up. Unfortunately money, school budgest, lack of ability to pay catholic tuition these are fading and fish if any is a sickening McDonalds thing. Of course local College coaches would back slap the HS Coaches which was the pipeline.

If they are looking, we are looking (kinda applies to recruiting against other schools). Hell, in hoops, eighth graders are being evaluated by scouts.

As a teacher I would get fired for "looking" at high school freshman... but I am still young, a college freshman over the age of 18... I'm "looking" all I want... ;)

Yeah they look at freshmen. Anything to get a leg up on the competition, get on that big time recruit early. Or possible big time recruit anyway. A lot can happen in four years.

College coaches come into a school in the spring and the coaches usually have a lists of the kids that they think could play at the D-1 or whatever level. They break it down usually Seniors, Junior, Soph and stud Fresh. The college coaches have limited access to the underclassman but they know who they are and how good they may be well before the student is thinking about colleges.

Nothing like putting pressure on kids that haven't really dated.

Most of the reasearch is done on the college side when talking about underclassman. The coach will introduce himself that kinda thing, but the college coaches will do the reasearch, watch prospect films, to see what kind of player the kid will become. All while the young fresh or sophmore doesnt really even think about colleges.

One would think that the pressure comes from those under the table. Who are 'suggesting'. This happens alot for high schools, as far as college, hopefully not so much.
