Sometimes new names, like Schultz, are truly new names to Notre Dame fans. Other times new names are really old names to Irish fans. That was the case last week when the Irish coaching staff issued a scholarship offer to Alex Bars. Bars, OL, 6-6, 290, Montgomery Bell Academy, Nashville, TN comes from a football playing family. His two older brothers attend the University of Michigan and Penn State University respectively but his father, Joe Bars, played linebacker for Notre Dame in the early 1980’s. For long time Irish fans, Bars is not a new name in Blue and Gold.

“I’m sure it helps,” said Marty Euverard, Bars’ head coach at Montgomery Bell Academy of his star offensive lineman’s legacy connection to Notre Dame. “He’s got a lot of brothers that play and his dad played so I’m sure it helped.”

Of course, what has helped Bars’ recruitment more than anything was his outstanding junior season.

“He had a great year last year,” stated his coach. “He’s a big kid. He’s a legit 6-6 plus. He’s got great feet. He’s a really good athlete to be as big as he is. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

The talented Tennessean has piled up offers from a veritable who’s who of college football elite. In addition to Notre Dame he holds offers from Stanford, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Nebraska, among others. The Irish will have a true dog fight on their hands to earn the legacy’s signature. Still, his coach believes his superstar lineman was excited about the Notre Dame offer.

“He’s excited Euverard stated. “He’s excited about Notre Dame and of course all of the offers he has. He’s pretty quiet about everything. He’s a very humble kid taking it all in stride. He doesn’t give any indication of where he’s going to school or anything, but I’m sure that means a lot to him.”

The current favorite as our next commit. That would leave one spot held for Braden Smith on the OL.

No, not exactly. Wants to do it before his Sr year and sooner than later. It sounds like ND has lessened the pressure for him to commit right away and will wait til NSD for him if they have to.

Bars follows family footsteps
Jake Brown
IrishIllustrated.com Recruiting Analyst

Alex Bars needed no more time to make a college decision.

Last week the Rivals100 offensive tackle from Nashville expressed patience with the recruiting process, setting no concrete time line for announcing a choice. Now he is committed to Notre Dame, choosing to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Bars delivered the news to offensive line coach Harry Hiestand on Friday afternoon then also talked with offensive coordinator Chuck Martin and head coach Brian Kelly.

“I thought about it real hard for like the last month,” said Bars, whose father, Joe, played for the Irish. “Pressure started coming on and spots started filling up. I just realized that was the school for me.”

Notre Dame won out over scholarship offers from Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Virginia, among others.

Bars started trending in that direction after a spring visit to watch practice, during which he watched close as Hiestand put his players through the paces.

“He’s great,” Bars said. “He’s great. I know his current players love him. The guys that are committed I know really like him. He’s a really likable guy. I know he’s a great coach. I really liked his coaching style when I was up at practice.”

Now with Bars in the fold Hiestand holds commitments from four offensive linemen, all ranked in the Rivals250. Bars checks in as the No. 55 prospect overall. Quenton Nelson (66), Sam Mustipher (122) and Jimmy Byrne (184) round out the haul.

Notre Dame now has 10 commitments overall in the Class of 2014, including seven in the Rivals250 with five-star running back Elijah Hood and wide receiver Justin Brent.

Bars couldn’t be happier to cap off the recruiting process by joining the others.

“It’s a great academic school,” Bars said. “They’ve got a 100 percent graduation rate, a top football program. The staff is really cares about their players. Of course, the tradition. All around it’s just a great school.”

AWESOME. The big uglies keep coming.

I wonder if this will help recruiting in other areas? This pretty much solidifies Kelly's plan of building out a great OL and thus proving to recruits that we are here to stay and that if they sign with us we will have one of the best foundations in the country...

Welcome Alex! Guys this OL haul over the past two years is incredible. Check it out:

247 Composite Rankings:
Elmer - #10 OT, #112 overall
McGovern - #13 OT, #192 overall
McGlinchey - #11 OT, #161 overall
Montelus - #8 OG, #141 overall
Bivin - #9 OT, #97 overall
Bars - #9 OT, #92 overall
Nelson - #14 OT, #135 overall
Mustifer - #10 OG, #143 overall
Byrne - #15 OT, #231 overall

7 of the 9 are 6'5" or taller.

Every OL in both class is a composite top 200 player but one, and even he is in the top 250. 5 of the 9 guys are ranked in the composite top 10 at their position and no one is ranked lower than 15th at their position. And we still have a great shot at landing Braden Smith, folks.
This is really fun to watch.

Plus, I never mind ND sticking it to the old skunk bears (especially this week!).

awesome! what a great last 2 years of OL recruiting. one more spot for OL if jones or smith decide to join.

Quick question regarding how many OL folks think the Irish recruit for 2015 if they get Jones or Smith? Ten OL in two years will probably get spread out over three years (2016 to 2018) in terms of their last year at ND (assuming some freshmen see time this year) so I think no more than three a year after this for a couple of years then up to four.

Well Byrne, Mustipher, Nelson, and Bars are 2014 recruits. Did you mean how many in 2015?

Alex Bullard, Matt James (RIP), Tate Nichols, Brad Carrico, and Jordan Prestwood ... all OL guys that could still be on the roster this year, but for various reasons are not. OL schollies seem to open up, the staff will fill accordingly. But if all 9 (or 10) 2013 and 2014 recruits stay healthy you probably won't see another 5 2015 OL haul.

Wow, this is fantastic! I give a lot of credit to Kelly and Alford, but I think we need to start taking notice of Heistand. Seems like all our OL recruits just rave about him. Pretty great stuff. If you are a "skill" player, I don't know how you don't notice what kind of foundation is being laid.

Welcome aboard, Bars!

This is very true. What a great hire he turned out to be. His current players rave about him, recruits rave about him. He just has the look of that traditional, hard nosed, no nonsense, football coach. I hope he stays at ND for a long time.

There was a chance, or at least perception, that Michigan was going to be the favorite here. For him to pick Notre Dame puts a good stamp on the OL class for 2014, though not the final stamp perhaps.

On paper, these last two classes look very good. Development and retention are now the key. I think of the 9 kids it seems likely someone will transfer or be injured to the point that he won't be able to contribute. That's college football I suppose. Just have to hope they pan out on the field and off.
