Scout has finally evaluated Newman and has made him a 4 star recruit. Nice to see Newman finally getting some recognition from the recruiting boards. Scout has him rated higher than Big Omar, Rivals has them the other way around.

He and Hunter are the best tag-team option ND could have hoped for. Forston is more thought of as a 4-3 DT, but Hunter and Newman are prototype NTs, and should compliment one another extremely well. Newman's name isn't as "sexy" as Omar's (waiting for the stony punch line there), but he's just what ND needs; a big run plugger who won't be budged.

"Conditioning isn't about how many times you can do it, it's about having the same energy on the last one that you had on the first one," Newman said. "I feel like I'm cruising through gassers now. My only problem is struggling to keep enough calories in my system."

Guys, I got to tell you about PRP. They ALWAYS struggle, last year was their best year in eons with 7 wins I think. When I was in HS, they usually won 1 or 2 games a year. This IS NOT a football school, their specialty is baseball. Several of the little leaguers who won the LL World Series (from Louisville) in 2002 play for PRP. Although 0-2, they have actually been competitve in both games, which is good for them.

The PRP defense only allowed 121 yards of Total Offense. Since Brandon is in the middle of that D, he most likely had a good game.

Take it for what it's worth, but UK fan is getting excited about stealing Brandon from ND. He was at the UK game against UofL Saturday, and was decked out in UK garb, that is all verified fact. But on the other hand, his best friend plays for the Cats, and he has been a UK fan for awhile, so it may just be a normal thing for him to do.
UK made a lot of headway with KY recruits by beating UofL. I cheer for both ND and UK, but certainly want BN to stay irish for the 40 year reason. I'll keep my ears open for any news/talk/gossip.

Over on espn they asked Mike Golic about his thoughts on recruiting. According to him his son and the other commits are texting each other daily and that all of them are still on board and are not wayvering in thir commitments to Charlie and N.D. If we sit here and worry about every commit who is seen in a nother schools colors this season we will be on this board every week talking about a different commit. Lets just wait and see if any of the commits comes out and says anything. Until then can we please give this kind of stuff a rest.

PRP beat up on another dog, but at least they are beating teams they should in big fashion. Seneca put up a lot of rushing yards on Brandon though.
I need to check the schedule, but I'll go to see Brandon play Louisville St Xavier this month. They are #1 in state, moving inside top 40 nationally after their win over Trinity this week (who was #36 US). Nice game BTW, St X over Trinity 24-15. Attendance was 37,550 which was disappointing because I thought we'd hit 40k with the weather. Maybe next year.

i remember a while ago watching a rivals video of Brandon on his commitment...he seemed like such a great kid, funny, smart, and most of all FIRM in his commitment to ND and he especially seemed to have a connection with Corwin. So I am not worrying at all about BN...once CB has his hooks in you, only matter of time before he has you "in the boat." This guy is one of Corwins earliest, and most recruited (in terms of time spent with) recruit. He is all IRISH. Worry not, boys.

Brandon Newman
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Height, weight: 6-1, 300
Credentials: Newman began the season as the most hyped college prospect in the state because he had committed to Notre Dame. His high profile wasn't lost on opponents. "It's tough when you've got a big target on your chest every week," PRP assistant Jason Stinson said. "Brandon had to overcome some adversity, like being double- and triple-teamed a lot." PRP's killer schedule (including St. Xavier, Trinity, Manual and Indianapolis Cathedral) didn't help. Newman still had an impact. He finished his career with 32 tackles for losses. "The most important thing you can say about Brandon is that he's a better person than football player," Stinson said.

This kid is good. I live right across the river from PRP his high school. Kentucky high school players arent normally rated this high and if they are, they normally get pressured in to staying close and going to UK or UofL which in my opinion makes him a very smart kid for not doing so. St. X and Trinity win the state title just about every year and that plays an intimidation factor with a lot of kids, Brandon didnt really seem to care and played great against all tough opponents. Im very excited about this kid. Merry Christmas everyone on GH

That is a tough schedule. As RtR said, St. X and Trinity seem to always win the state title, and Indy Cathedral is no pushover - 2006 4A State Champs, and this year they only lost 3 games (Evansville Reitz, Moeller (Cincy) and Carmel). Cathedral is also, if I remember correctly, the only high school team legally allowed to wear the same uniforms as ND.

Cathedral is definitely not a pushover. The linebackers are absolutely amazing. Matthias Kiwinuka and Jeremy Trueblood both went to Cathedral. State champions in 2006 and was 2 yards away from being a state finalist. Cathedral had the leprechaun for its entire history, but ND took it away from them last year. The jerseys are exactly alike the late 90s jerseys with the shamrock on the collar and logo on the arm. The only team that we lost to this year went had QBs going to major colleges (Reitz-Ball St., Moeller-Ohio State, Carmel-Morgan Newton is being recruited by ND, Purdue, IU, and Iowa. Cathedral beat Carmel in 2006 who went on to the 5A state finals.

Hmmm...not exactly sure what to make of that?! ;)
As far as PRP's schedule, they didn't list all the teams, but they played one of the tougest schedules, including 6 or the top 10 in KY alone. I know Brandon poured through the line of my St X Tigers on the first play of the game and sacked the QB.
We had a better year this year as far as talent, much more D1 talent than normal. One that may have got away is Sam Robey (son of UK BBall great Rick Robey), who was waiting for an ND offer and was under the radar all year. Would have commited on the spot, so I'm told. Anyway, he went to UF, recruited as a center, which he has never played.
I just hope he isn't hosed by Urban, cause he's a good kid.

Agreed Fish, that was my first observation when I saw Mike GII in the OLvDL drills - he is struggling with the bulk of the D-Linemen. In the interview, Brandon referenced Mike's technique as being strong, but that he needs to strengthen.
Actually, that brings up something else about Brandon: he appears very analytical. I could easily see him coaching when his playing days are done. More than any recruit that I remember, he was talking technique/etc.

Here's a good article on Newman from the South Bend Tribune:
http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080103/SPORTS13/801030399/1021/Sports
It seems some personal/family issues factored into, by his own admission ("I was horrible. I know how I performed. I saw my film."), subpar season. It looks like he is more than making up for it in the AAA practices.
While I have learned to take Lemming's comments with a grain of salt, here's some high praise for Brandon:
"He's got a real mean streak and he's a tough kid, who two, three, four years down the line we may all look back say, 'He was better than Hunter anyway.' I really am surprised how good he is."

http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080105/SPORTS13/801050415/1023/SPORTS13
In this article, Lemming says that Brandon was the second best DT at the AAA game (Forston was the best). It also includes Lemming's impression of the other ND recruits who participated in the AAA game.

As it turns out despite being called Stumpy and a few other things by the Rivals asshats, that Newman had the biggest jump in his Rivals Rating (RR) of all of the ND recruits, even Floyd & TRob. Floyd went from a 6.0 (High 4 star) to a 6.1 (5 star), TRob went from a 5.9 (Mid 4 star) to a 6.0 (High 4 star). But here's the money shot.
"I asked Newman if other schools were continuing to recruit him. He committed to Notre Dame last spring and has stuck with that decision.
Newman said UK coach Rich Brooks was at PRP recently but that he wouldn't meet with the coach because "I know I made the right decision."

Newman late to his own signing because he was taking (and Acing) a test.
http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/labels/Brandon%20Newman.html
"Some people say (signing is) a weight off their shoulders but I think I have been a part of Notre Dame for a long time now and I'm just so excited about going there," he said. "I plan on working hard and if I don't play a lot my freshman year then that's something that's my fault. I have the work ethic where I planned on playing no matter where I was going. I am going to try and be the best I can possible be at my position."
I wish I could find the pic in the actual newspaper, since it's different than the web paper. Newman is decked out in all green; hat, shirt and all, and he is singing his papers with mom behind him. He has the biggest smile on his face, you can't help but feel happy for the kid.
