-----Kid is friends with the Fassano family and has been watching ND football since he got there and loves everything about it. Has sent film out to ND and hopes for feedback. Has camped at RU, PSU, and BC this summer as well as being in contact with Maryland, Virginia and UConn so far. He's a Jersey product and Charlie will take that into account. He plays in Group 1 which is the lowest level in NJ, but has been starting since a Fr. and has all kinds of accolades. He is also an honor roll student so that is always a good sign.

Notre Dame - “I am good friends with Anthony Fasano and his younger brother, so when he started playing at Notre Dame I really started following them and actually went up for a game with the family to watch him play. It was very nice there and the stadium and campus were absolutely gorgeous. I mean, you have Touchdown Jesus right there and all the other tradition, so it’s a pretty different place. Notre Dame is another school that is great academically. I just sent them film recently, so I am hoping to hear back from them when they can contact us.”

If those are the dumbbells that this Soph curls with, I would hate to see what he looks like when he's a junior in college.

As indicated by 'dreamer, he already has college LB size

scooper
08-09-2007, 08:26 AM
I was going to suggest that he might grow to DE size by college, but considering the 3-4 and the size of the OLB's, he may be perfect DE/OLB "tweener" size by that point. The kid's huge for a rising Jr. , that's for sure.

agree with everything scooper said. this guy has phenomenal size for his age. ...but he's not curling, he's doing what we always called, "the farmer's walk"... i'm sure there's a better term for it. that picture reminded me of Brian "Sugar Tits" Cushing back when he was being recruited.

was on Lemming's Generation Next on CSTV with an '09 WR from Delaware.

Calabrese stated he'll be attending Nike's Elite Camp & that Rutgers, BC and 'Cuse are the only offers he has.

When asked who else he's interested in, ND was the first school given and he said he's been in contact with the staff.

same HS as Anthony Fasano. They didnt show many highlights on the segment but he rocked a few RBs helmets on a few of his hits.

I'm a bit surpised that Calabrese is not coming to a Junior Day, but these guys do have to pay their own way so that could be a reason. Carlo's been going to a few regional combines so I am sure some ND staff is keeping up with him. I expect a lot of LB's to be offered in the next 6 weeks, so far the only LB offer we have is to Te'o, and unless Calabrese has been a bust at these combines I would think he is a likely candidate to be offered.

Jersey Guy, friend of Fasano's brother, probably a friend of Tony Soprano as well, who would dare not offer him.;)

FWIW - Schiano has been rumored as a potential successor to paterno. Who knows how that will play out though...I think the Irish have a good shot at landing Calabrese. The Jersey connections, Fasano's are probably working on him too.

Here's a pop quiz for all of you New Jersyans (I grew up there but now reside in CA) - There is a picture of Calabrese where he just knocked the snot out of somebody in a green, yellow and white uni and is standing over him, straddling him. Which school does that poor kid play for? Hint - the answer is two words. :D

No idea, I played against Verona in high school and actually had the lovely duty of being matched up against Fasano for the entire game... both ways. Needless to say, even though I was a good football player, it was a long day. As for the team he was playing I have no idea. The only school I could think of would be MKA or Cedar Grove. Let me know who it is.

Gators are the latest offer for Calabrese
By Mike Farrell, Recruiting Analyst
Mar 12, 12:45 pm EDT

“He’s gotten a few more offers in the past week or two from Notre Dame, Maryland and Florida,” his father, Carlo Calabrese Sr. said. “He’s excited about the one from the Gators. It’s a great school and a great program. As a matter of fact, he’s working out with Will Hill. Will is trying to get him to embrace it.

“He has five offers now from Rutgers, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Maryland and Florida.”

“I’d say the top six or so are Rutgers, Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida Virginia and Boston College,” he said. “There are a lot of RU alumni and everyone around here wants him to play for the Garden State. Of course, Notre Dame is a special scholarship and Charlie Weis likes him a lot. Penn State is high on his wish list and the Gators are a unique opportunity. It’s a very special to play in the SEC. Finally Coach Groh likes him a lot and Boston College is up there too.”

That's true as long as you are willing to always acccept the verbal from the kids that you offer if the slot you are offering them for is available. That is what The Gainesville Slimeball does not do that almost every other CFB coach does, which is what makes him more than just ordinary slime. The best word that comes to mind to replace ordinary in his case is odious.

After reading about the visit here in Irish Eyes, you get a feel we are in the final 2 irf not favored. Then you read from the wanker on all of his visits, and we are then just in the final 5 and he won't make a decision until after the season. These were 2 weeks apart and show that time can cause some of the glow to fade. We will see, but I sure would never put him down in the column as a definate Irish guy yet. Too much work left. I like where we sit with him, but it will take us plenty of time and effort- well worth it though. JMO

You mean per B&G don't you. Last thing from that board is that they do not think it is happening tonight, but Rivals has supposedly heard from Calabrese himself confirming that he will announce.

As for ND's chances, you would have to think that we are in very good shape here based on the timing of this announcement, but after Shrive & Budmayr, I would not want to put any money on it. If he is indeed announcing tonight we should get a better feel for our chances as the day goes on.

Verona, N.J., linebacker Carlo Calabrese made his college decision on a very special day for he and his family. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker chose his mother's birthday, May 21st, to verbally commit to Notre Dame over offers from Rutgers, Boston College, Florida and others... "

maybe you can help me out with this, but can you offer any ideas on why Penn State never offered Calabrese?

Honestly don't know...the only thing I can think of is that the staff became enamored with NJ LB Glenn Carson who also wrestles. But Carlo is a stud, showed interest in Penn State and Penn State showed interest in him. He visited for a game in '07 and I thought for sure he would be one of the first to get an offer...maybe they felt like they could have gotten Glenn by now? Carlo is excellent for sure though, aggressive/physical and he has the proto-typical size/speed and definitely has the grades. I also believe Carlo was involved in power-lifting events or something like that and has done very well...so he obviously has excellent work ethic.

I really don't know...hopefully we will get Glenn and I think we lead or are co-leaders with Rutgers [potentially?] so I'll see how that plays out. We also offered another NJ prospect, Gerald Hodges who could potentially be a safety but will likely grow into a LB...I believe he is already 6'3-6'2 220-225 with 4.5 speed.

I really think Penn State will end up with Carlson, that dude is a stud. I still would like to see Carlson get an offer. I don't see Weis doing that, and will take his chance and work hard on Te'o, but in my opinion I would still put that offer out to Carlson, but by the sounds of it, ND would have a lot of catching up to do to get up to Penn State and Rutgers level. What a great day and fantastic start to the Memorial Weekend w Carlo committing. Here is where I wonder if the recent offer to Fox may have had any play in getting Carlo to pull the trigger to ensure his spot.

My hope is that another LB decides he should not wait or continue to play musical chairs with the others (Monti Te'o, Jordan Barrett, Jelani Jenkins, Fox) and jumps for a chair now like Theo did in the derby for the 2nd slot at rb.

I thought that I read somewhere that Carlo let CW know about his commit a few weeks ago, but wanted to wait until his moms birthday to make a public announcement. So I think the timing of the Fox offer really affected Carlos decision.

Inside Linebacker Carlo Calabrese picks Notre Dame

Carlo Calabrese, an ESPN 150 Watch List prospect, has pledged Notre Dame over Florida, Rutgers and Boston College, writes the South Bend Tribune.
Calabrese appears eager to strap on the pads for the Irish, "I like hitting kids. That's my favorite thing."

ESPN's Billy Tucker elaborated on the commitment, "Calabrese is ND's second ESPN 150 Watch List defensive commit in a good-looking '09 class thus far."
"The run plugging middle linebacker will spend most of his time in South Bend stacked behind a fellow New Jersey native with similar run-stuffing tenacity, defensive tackle Tyler Stockton (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School)."
"Calabrese is your prototypical D-I middle linebacker with all the physical and mental intangibles to be very productive at the next level."
"He is tough, aggressive and has the great strength, thickness and overall size to stack and shed the run effectively. We had a chance to meet this kid in person at the Gainesville, Fla. NIKE Football Training Camp, and he is all of his listed 225-pounds and still lean enough to add size and play at the 240-pound range. He stays square with a good base and leverage at the point of attack and is a punishing tackler."
"Speed maybe be limited to the short-range at the next level but we expect this kid to clean up between the tackles."

I'm not buying into the Fox offer making Carlo pull the trigger. If I'm not mistaken Fox is being recruited as an OLB type (i.e. Neal and Smith). The only affect I see is going to be Barrett. I think his ship has sailed and there is no room left at the Inn for him.

You are dead on with the first part, Calabrese was in no way influenced by Fox getting an offer, even though Fox could eventually end up on the inside with Carlo down the road. I don't agree on the Barrett part though, I think he still has a spot if he wants it, at least for now.

"A guy who loves to play the game. He's got a great football mind and a great football attitude," CSTV recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "He's the type of guy you're going to have to plug him in somewhere just because of his attitude. Very aggressive, good football instincts."

Calabrese projects as a middle (MIKE) linebacker in Notre Dame's 3-4 scheme.

"I like hitting kids," Calabrese said. "That's my favorite thing."

This is the type of guy I was so excited about when we shifted to a 3-4......if we still played the 4-3....I wouldn't be as excited about Carlo.....but instead of him having to get sideline to sideline....his area of responsibility is nearly cut in half!!!!!!!!

Another thing I have noticed......he is wrecking kids from a straight standstill!!! That is the power lifting influence....I know that the focus of his strength training may change....but I hope he never loses that ability for short explosiveness...........BTW....special teams impact for 4 years........before all is said and done....I believe he will be a special teams captain at ND

KamaraPolice

He definitely has the speed to cover downfield, but he doesnt look to be agile. you're right about the fact his lateral movement will be greatly reduced playing in a 3-4. What a monster hitter and he does appear to have room to get bigger. Big Big run stuffer here. Plus, looking at his pictures, you can tell he's all natural which means he has great genes and an incredible work ethic.

Great to have you aboard Carlo! Hope you have a blast playing for Notre Dame.

N.J. linebacker honors mom with Notre Dame selection

On one of his visits he also hung out with fellow New Jersey native Mike Ragone and a quarterback from California.

"I went out with Mike, Duval and Jimmy Clausen and they were all cool," he said. "I had played against Duval and had certainly known about Mike and Jimmy and it was good to get to know them all better."

"It really came down to Notre Dame, Rutgers and BC," he said. "Rutgers was really hard to say no to because it's close to home, the coaches loved me there and my family could easily watch me play every game. But in the end it came down to what Notre Dame can offer outside of football as well as the great football tradition."

“Verona touchdown scored by Calabrese from DePalma,” the public address announcer informed the euphoric Verona fans.

“Carlo told me after the game that there is no way he was going to be caught. I don’t know how fast his forty time is, but that kid has plenty of football speed. By sheer will, he was not going to allow himself to be caught,” his father smiles.

“There we all were, out of our minds excited, but there was still plenty of time on the clock, especially with a weapon like Kamara on the other side of the field. We were so excited but still a touch nervous.” They had good reason to be worried.

Early in the next drive, the Hoboken QB hit Kamara with a pass on which Kamara made an outstanding catch. The senior wide receiver gathered his balance and sprinted toward the end zone. A junior safety, Rob Shabazian, for Verona lay out and tripped up Kamara at the Verona 13-yard-line.

ROCKY 4?

Carlo Calabrese is building a number of nicknames for himself. He has long been called “Calabeast” by his teammates and friends. Recently, a fine poster on BlueandGold.com noted that his hits are so explosive and he wears the number four football jersey, so “C4,” the plastic explosive, is a natural.

Piggy backing on the jersey number idea, perhaps Carlos can now be called “Rocky 4?” He might actually share some of the same characteristics as the fictional Rocky Balboa, who was tough as nails and vastly underrated. On a side yet important note, Carlo is much brighter than Balboa.

Calabrese has been heavily recruited by some of the best football schools in the country, yet he is relatively lightly regarded by many recruiting services and experts. Often when such a disconnect exists, the explanation can be found in the “measurables.” Like NFL combine numbers are usually blown out of proportion, the same can happen with high school recruiting.

Basically, experts are ignoring the playmaking ability of Calabrese and focusing more on what they perceive to be major weaknesses, his speed and quickness. Calabrese is aware of the criticism, but that doesn’t drive him to succeed. He pursues excellence and strives for perfection everyday.

To that end, he has picked up a new supplement to his regular workout routine. Carlo has begun training as a boxer. Well, actually, he is going through the same training boxers do. He has no immediate plans to actually take fights.

The idea is really quite simple, as his father explains.

“Carlos has great football speed, so we are not worried about that. However, you can never be fast enough, quick enough or strong enough in the game of football. Also, it doesn’t matter how fast you are as a linebacker if you can’t fight off blocks to get to the ball carrier,” Carlo, Sr. said.

His trainer is Mac Gallagher, a former lineman from Penn State, and he has Carlo ready to beat up lineman trying to block him. The main idea is to give Carlo increased quickness and the ability to use his hands and feet in unison when shedding blocks.

Calabrese is used to attention while he is playing football, but he is not familiar with getting so much attention while he works out.

“He had all the spectators in the gym glued to his workout in awe,” Carlo’s father chuckled, remembering the first few of his son’s workouts under Gallagher.

Regardless of what the spectators think of his workouts, the actual results are what count.

“This training has made him without question much faster with his feet (skipping rope) and quicker with his hands and much, much more aggressive as an attacker when blitzing” his dad concluded.

i think the tenuda is licking his lips looking at the linebackers coming in the year and next. with carlo plugging the middle i would love to see jenkins with his speed coming off the tackle to punish people. they wont be able to block them both that for sure and we will see better matchups with our lineman oh my god i cant wait

NICE ARTICLE ON VERONA'S SEASON WITH A HIGHLIGHT ON CARLO.

From the article

Of course, the heart and soul of the Verona program during its now three championship game appearances in four years is Carlo Calabrese, who has done a little bit of everything to help the Hillbilly cause since his freshman year, including starting at QB in place of an injured Mitch Roshong against Hoboken in the 2005 title tilt won by the Redwings, 21-6.

Calabrese was a tight end as a sophomore, started at QB as a junior, and has played fullback, tailback, tight end, wide receiver and has stepped in on occasion at QB in 2008 while hauling in 25 receptions for 432 yards and 4 TDs.

All the while he continues to be one of the state’s top middle linebackers, a position he hopes to play next year at Notre Dame where he will head to on a full scholarship in 2009.

“Carlo has 123 solo tackles this season,” said Racioppe. “He is constantly double-, and triple-teamed, but he still is there to make the plays.

“When big plays need to be made it seems as if Carlo is always in the middle. He has also contributed in a big way on the offensive side as a blocker, and as a receiver. His presence takes a little of the pressure off Looney.”

Carlo finished the season with a NJ state championship, 27 catches for 462 yards and 130 solo tackles (a school record). He has been invited to play in the Hawaii bowl.

Not too shabby for a Rivals 3*

I came across this post by Hejduk23 over on DD and just had to share it with you guys if you haven't already seen it:

"I had a nice chat with Coach Bob Chimel the other day. I asked him his thoughts on us getting Manti. He said he didn't know. Then he said we would absolutely love Carlo. He said if he had season tix in the first three rows he'd have to get them changed because Carlo hits anything that moves."

I can't wait for Carlo to put on pads for ND!

I just watched some of this kids film. He looks like a line backer but I think he could make a great fullback. Throwing some painful blocks and taking the odd run might fit him.

In our current system that would be a huge waste, he is gonna bring back the nasty on D

As much as we are all excited about the coming of Manti, I believe Carlo is going to bring the Irish one of the most aggressive, tough and explosive LB's that we have seen in many years. Here are two videos of Carlo's senior season. Enjoy!!!

While both Part 1 and Part 2 are filled with devastating hits, watch the one at 5:05 in Part 2.

We'll see if he is as tenacious vs our 1st team offense. I could see Olsen, Wenger, Stewart and Aldridge / Paskorz silencing him for a while. The question is, how will he respond to it?

The NJ All Stars beat a team from eight other States in the Norteast today by the score of 13 to 7. Here is a exerpt from that game.

With 1:44 remaining in the game and the score deadlocked at 7-all, Northeast quarterback Marcus Wasilewski from Mount Carmel, Pa. put his team in field position to win the game with a field goal.

Verona linebacker Carlo Calabrese, who plans on playing for Notre Dame in the fall, intercepted Wasilewski with 16 seconds left. Following the interception, Calabrese pitched the ball back to safety Josh Evans (Irvington) who returned it for the winning touchdown and the New Jersey sideline stormed the field to douse head coach Phil Simms, a former Super Bowl MVP with the New York Giants, with water.

I was facing East, the sun was shining and I just felt the need to "quote" you.

I can't remember who said it, I want to say Bill Lewis did, but someone, some quoteable one said, "Don't get seats in the first few rows because Carlo will hit anything that moves."

And you can quote someone on that.

Notre Dame linebacker's case continued into August

SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese appeared briefly in St. Joseph County traffic and misdemeanor court on Wednesday, his first appearance in court following a May party that ended with allegations he threatened an officer.

Calabrese, 21, has been charged one count of misdemeanor intimidation for allegedly threatening a South Bend police officer during a raid on May 3 party in South Bend. Teammate and quarterback Tommy Rees was also arrested at that party on charges of resisting law enforcement, battery and minor consumption.

Although charged in May, Calabrese did not appear in court for his initial hearing, and instead was represented by an attorney.

At Wednesdays' hearing -- originally he had been scheduled to appear in court on Thursday; it's not clear why the hearing was moved up a day -- Calabrese was granted a continuance in the case. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 20, less than two weeks before Notre Dame plays its first football game of the season against Navy in Dublin, Ireland.

a funny thing is that if an irish athlete with a criminal record had to come play a game in the states their visa would be denied due to said record. dont think it works the same way here though, and CC's charge is just a minor one so he should ok.

Mom's fight with cancer inspires Calabrese
With mother cancer-free for 5 years and linebacker re-established as starter and, family and friends will celebrate at ND-USC game

Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese reacts after forcing a fumble during the first half of their game against Wake Forest.

By Brian Hamilton, Chicago Tribune reporter
7:05 p.m. CDT, October 15, 2013

Being a college student, Carlo Calabrese on occasion calls home. And being a college student, when he calls, he generally asks for things like money. And being a cancer survivor and a woman with that innate New Jersey mom ability to needle her children's guilt sensors, Ann Calabrese has a reply ready, just before she says yes.

What, she will ask, would you do without me?

"She kind of jokes around, like, 'What would happen if that cancer went wrong?'" Carlo Calabrese said. "'What would you do without me?' And we don't know what we would do without her."

The coming weekend is many things for Notre Dame, with the arrival of wobbly-but-dangerous rival USC. For the Irish's leading tackler and his family, it very specifically is a commemoration of not having to face a reality that they can joke about now.

On Aug. 14, Ann Calabrese reached a significant milepost: Five years clear of cancer. On Saturday, family, friends, some big names and a fire truck will gather to party in South Bend about that. Ann Calabrese is healthy, Carlo Calabrese is starting at linebacker again, and what's not to celebrate.

"Believe it or not, when I went under for surgery, I pictured my daughters in their wedding gowns and my son in a Notre Dame uniform," said Ann Calabrese, who had her initial surgery in 2008, when Carlo was a high school senior.

"Football just kept me going. I looked forward to weekends. I looked forward to games. It made me forget that I had chemo the next day when I came home. I just got through it, like millions of other women."

She endured and then eventually witnessed her son do the same, albeit with obviously and considerably lesser stakes.

Calabrese slid from a starter to a timeshare at linebacker but has re-established a firm grasp on an inside job in his final season. His 40 tackles are tied for the team-high.

"He's playing downhill," Irish coach Brian Kelly said. "He's hitting open windows, he's being aggressive where he's asked to attack the line of scrimmage."

The circumstances only connect through hyperbole — sports generally not being life or death — but the Calabreses insist their mother's fortitude inspired their own. Sister Alyssa ran a marathon in Scranton, Pa., last weekend, wearing pink, thinking of her mother to push through rough spots, ultimately qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Then there was Carlo, calling as a freshman to say he was coming home. Sister Jacquleen jumped on the line to inform her little brother that if their mother could see cancer through, he could last in South Bend. A like mindset applied to his losing a starting gig, only to remain resolute and to win one back.

"She taught me never to give up, and fight for what you believe in, fight hard all the time," Calabrese said. "That's what I've learned and it helped out with football."

Said Ann Calabrese: "I'm just so proud of that kid, I really, really am. He sticks with anything he has to do. He would do anything for that team. For him to have a year where he could possibly shine, it's awesome."

The party Saturday aims to be just as grand.

The Clay Fire Department will bring its pink engine to raise money for breast cancer research. Family friends Bob and Jim Grogan will fly in on private jet stocked with Italian specialties from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, N.Y. Sixteen more friends and family will pile into a Triangle Tours luxury bus for the trip to South Bend.

Mike and Bob Golic are expected to drop by, as are Notre Dame player parents Cris Collinsworth and David Robinson, and perhaps a few more luminaries. With a game to play, Carlo Calabrese can't attend. But it's not like he needs the reminder of who he's playing for.

"I think about it when people (at the grocery story) ask you to donate a dollar to breast cancer or something like that," Calabrese said. "Then I stop and think about what we went through. If I'm going through a hard time, I'll think about how she went through a hard time and how she fought through it. That's when I think about it."
