How big of an impact will the ban on text messages have for us up until loi day? Personally i think its a good thing (for now), we already have 19 in the "bag" and are closing the deal or firmly entrenched with the few others we are goin after. If we werent in that enviable postition obviously this would be a bigger issue. Think short term this could be a good thing for us, it helps us keep the vultures away (urban, poodle) to just get this tremendous class in here. Last years class was good but this one is the turning point. Long term hopefully its repealed right after signing day, im probably still just paranoid after last year.

I say Urban will be the coach to get caught first for breaking it...

They had to do something to regulate the texts. It was getting to be an abused loophole for contacting recruits. I have known Johnny Goodman's (wr) sister since grade school. She said he was getting text after text after text from michigan. he had to get rid of his phone because it wouldn't stop. I hope the coaches and recruiters can find a good way to keep a bug in a recruit's ear, but after hearing about johnny, i couldn't imagine how much it sucks.

Our staff is a bunch of texting crazies. Why do you think Ianello wants the ban to be banned? () I don't really like the whole thing too much, it hurts us more than it helps us. You're right in that it won't matter as much short-term, though. If we weren't in this position already (which texting helped us get to), it would be very detrimental indeed.

Thats another thing, how are they gonna police this "ban". They are already dragging there feet on usc's multitude of violations. If you break the text ban this year that might come back to bite you on the ass when never? where does that rank on there to-do list.

if you think about it, you can get a cheap cell, or text from computer programs and essentially be untraceable. it will be very very tough to police.

Not really, every time a student gets a text he doesn't want, he can report it. If enough come forward, the NCAA will crack down. The NCAA isn't a police department with detectives, it relies on people coming forward when they notice something wrong.

I don't agree with the ban...however I do think that there should be a limit to the # of texts that a program can send to a recruit. I think that the NCAA can monitor this by asking for the coaches phone records. I also believe that if a kid gives a program a verbal, other programs should not be able to keep texting them. Furthermore, the program that the kid has verballed to should be allowed to keep in contact with them. I also think that if there were an early signing period....alot of the texting problems would be rendered moot!

i think it should be up to the recruit. they should be able to say it's OK to text me, don't text me, stop texting me. Why does the NCAA have to be involved? Only if the school does not oner the recruits request should the NCAA get involved

The problem with that is that you know none of the shifty coaches, Poodle, sweatervest, bible bobby, and the like won't honor the recruits request. If it comes down to the kid saying don't text me, it won't happen. I know of several recruits that have said that they told a program to not text them and that they continued to receive texts from that program. Only way to make it stop is to get the NCAA involved.

That is sad that a coach or program would not listen to what a recruit is asking them to do. It shows how a lot of programs don't really care about the kids

It is, isn't it? You would think that if a coach wants a player to go to his school, he would listen to / respect the recruit, or at least pretend to.

Geez that is completely scummy for a school to do that.
I do agree with a limited ability to text and also being able to keep in touch with a verbal. A complete ban is odd.
