Sheldon has picked up an Irish offer according to Rivals and Scout. He also lists offers from Arkansas, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, TCU, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Wisconsin. He is also hearing from Kentucky, Louisville, Sparty, and pOSU.

It's been a long time since ND has actually offered a Warren Central kid, and probably even longer since any Warren Central kids have had legit interest in the Irish. However Day with this offer, and teammate Deionte Buckley who still hopes to get an Irish offer, both seem to have sincere interest in ND.

Tennessee has offered blue-chip defensive tackle Sheldon Day, Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central assistant coach Greg Brookey confirmed with 247Sports.

The Future247 prospect now has 20 scholarship offers. The Vols join the likes of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Penn State, Stanford, TCU, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

Brookey added that Auburn has increased its interest in Day.

In February, Notre Dame shored up its defensive presence by acquiring some of the most talented defensive ends in the nation. The commitments of Aaron Lynch, Stephon Tuitt, Ishaq Williams, Chase Hounshell, Anthony Rabasa , Brad Carrico, and Ben Councell gave the Irish some much needed depth on the outside of their defensive front.

With the graduation of nose tackle Ian Williams, the Irish will be hoping add depth to the interior of the defense by targeting some of the top defensive tackles in the class of 2012 . One of those targets just so happens to hail from the Hoosier state, Warren Central’s (Indianapolis, Ind.) Sheldon Day.

“He’s a talented defensive tackle,” said Warren Central head coach John Hart. “I know from the BCS. schools I’ve talked to, from TCU to Michigan and everyone in between; a lot have him ranked as the number one defensive tackle in the country in his class. We had a great one last year in Kris Harley (Virginia Tech), and as far as progression goes, Sheldon is a little bit ahead of Kris.”

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound junior has certainly gotten the attention of college recruiters, and according to Coach Hart, that attention is well deserved.

“I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head how many offers he has, but I don’t know many schools who have not offered him,” said the head coach. “I mean when you have a team like TCU leave the state of Texas to offer, you must be pretty good, especially for a national program like them.

“He was just so explosive, and he created so many big plays for us last year. I believe that is one of the reasons a lot of people are ranking us as one of the top teams in the nation for this upcoming year.”

With offers from around the nation pouring in, Day will have a plethora of quality choices, but don’t expect a decision to come anytime soon.

“I would say right now he is wide open,” said Coach Hart. “I don’t think he’s going to make a decision until he can go around and travel to some of the schools he can’t see. I will say that in our conversations, Notre Dame is one of those schools he has in that upper echelon of places he could go.

“He and I have spoken of the euphoria of Notre Dame, what it could mean playing on national television every week, and it’s a place his mom could get to every weekend from Indianapolis.”

If Day needs to know any particulars about the Notre Dame experience, he needn’t go much further then Warren Central’s coaching office for some firsthand knowledge.

“We have a great liaison in Jeff Burris, one of the all-time great Notre Dame players,” said Coach Hart. “Jeff is part of our staff and does a wonderful job with our kids.”

Though the defensive tackle’s recruitment has grown to national levels and has no sign of slowing down, his coach knows the hard work is just beginning for the youngster.

“I think once he gets to the next level, he needs to continue to improve his size and strength,” explained Hart. “He is extremely strong for only being a 16-year-old high school kid. He has a 300 to 315 bench, and he’ll squat close to 500 pounds. I think most people recruiting him feel like he can compete right away as opposed to redshirting him, so if he’s going to compete right away obviously his strength and size will have to improve. He’s 275 pounds right now, so he wouldn’t have to get much bigger. There’s not much body fat on him, so he’ll need to build strength.”

Five on the rise

Sheldon Day, DT, Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central

Day already has more than 20 offers, but they continue to roll in. Auburn and Nebraska could be next for the talented defensive trenchman, who should debut inside the top 100 when the Top247 is released on Wednesday. The 6-foot-3, 275-pounder is a powerful, athletic defensive tackle prospect.

Several of Indiana's top prospects head into the weekend with another scholarship offer to mull over.

For Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central's four-star defensive tackle Sheldon Day, he already had plenty to ponder.

According to assistant coach Greg Brookey, Florida is the latest program to offer the 6-foot-2, 278-pound Day. The Gators join schools such as Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina, Penn State, Stanford, TCU, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin in offering the blue-chip Day.

Good Day at Tennessee

Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central four-star defensive tackle Sheldon Day visited Tennessee on Tuesday and it sounds like he was a fan of what he saw.

“He said it was cool and wants to go back when he has more time,” assistant coach Greg Brookey said

Day is ranked as the 80th-best prospect in the country. Last weekend he visited Cincinnati with a few teammates, including running back Deionte Buckley and defensive end Joshua Posley, who each committed to the Bearcats this week.

Day’s most recent scholarship came from Florida, and he holds over 20 offers from many of the nation’s top programs. At this point, he remains completely open with the recruiting process and talks with as many coaches as he can. He was scheduled to call Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz on Wednesday night.

If not for Pipkins – and a late arrival – Sheldon Day may have had a strong case for MVP honors as well. Also a defensive interior player, Day is more of a one-gap penetrating defensive tackle that showed phenomenal burst and quickness at the snap of the football. There just wasn’t a defensive tackle that could compare with Day’s combination of quickness and strength at the point of attack. Already a top100 prospect, Day backed up his ranking in a big way.

06-14-2011, 02:59 PM
Day comes from the same high school that produced 2011 ESPNU 150 defensive tackle Kris Harley. Like Harley, Day is a good defensive tackle prospect who can be active and disruptive. Day does not have great size either, but does look to be a little bigger and may have some more physical upside than Harley. Day will need to try and add some more good bulk though. He displays a good get-off and is a player capable of getting some penetration. Harley may have been a little better at the point of attack, but Day is a kid who seems at his best playing on the move. He is productive when asked to slant and can quickly get into the gap, come tight to the blocker, and sink in a rip. He can get up-field and also displays the ability to get re-directed and flat down the line as well. When he needs to take on blockers he can hold his ground well, but does need to be sure to stay low and use his hands to keep blockers off of him. He is a good wrap-up tackler when he can get his hands on the ball carrier. As a pass rusher he can be disruptive as he can get off the ball and quickly to half-a-man. Could keep developing his pass rush arsenal, but works the rip move and flashes the ability to turn and get skinny some as well to help him work past. There are some differences, but in ways Day reminds us of his former teammate and that is not a bad thing.

We are #1 according to ESPN followed by scUM, PSU, UNC, and Tenn.

Wide open

Despite the growing trend to commit before one's senior season, several prospects said they were still wide open. Four-star prospect Sheldon Day from Indianapolis Warren Day, the 14th-best defensive tackle in the nation, said he's not even sure how many scholarship offers he has.

07-09-2011, 08:58 PM

Defensive Line MVP- Sheldon Day...

07-12-2011, 12:54 AM

Sheldon Day- Day was a monster on day two. He was un-stoppable up the middle beating pretty much anyone that was in front of him, including Isaac Seumalo among others. He didn't have a bad day one in the challenge, but his second day was simply that impressive. His "get off" on the snap was second to none.

HOOVER, Ala. - It is rare for an Indiana high school football team to meander its way to the Deep South, but with the National Select 7-on-7 being held just outside of Birmingham that is exactly where prospect-heavy Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central finds itself this weekend.

As such, four-star defensive tackle Sheldon Day accompanied his team as a high-profile cheerleader and spectator, and used the free time to take an unofficial trip to visit Auburn with assistant coach Greg Brookey.

"The visit went great," Day said. "It was really nice. The campus was beautiful and the coaches were intelligent."

Day is currently the No. 3 prospect in Indiana and holds offers to more than 20 schools, but he did not add to his tally with his recent trip.

"They didn't offer me today but I felt like they were going to," he said. "They told me they wanted to talk it over with the head coach (Gene Chizik."

With two dozen offers, Day is still working to narrow his list.

"I don't have a top five or anything like that," he said. "I am working to get down to that but I don't know when that is going to be."

He did have a fairly specific list for which teams would get his five official visits, although the visits read like a sports fanatic road trip.

"Michigan for the Notre Dame game, Auburn for the Alabama game, Virginia Tech for the North Carolina game, Tennessee for the LSU game, and Stanford for the Oregon game," Day said.

"It is hard to pick but I think those would be the ones right now."

One place he canceled was this weekend's scheduled trip to LSU.

"The coaches went on vacation so it doesn't seem worth it," Day said. "I don't know if I will get a chance to get back down there unless I take an official."

Day said not to expect a decision soon.

"I will probably wait until after the season but before signing day," he said. "I don't really like to be bothered with the recruiting stuff so probably mid-December."

No offical to Notre Dame. Is that because he's been there enough or is Notre Dame falling back?

07-22-2011, 12:58 PM
That, and he lives so close that there really isn't a reason to make any visit during the season an official visit.

07-22-2011, 12:58 PM
Impossible to know for sure. I would have felt better with an official visit to the ND/USC game if he is just looking for great game day experiences at different schools he is interested in.

Warren Central High (Indianapolis) five-star defensive tackle Sheldon Day joined Notre Dame's 2012 class when he gave a non-binding oral commitment to Irish coach Brian Kelly today.

Notre Dame had long had Sheldon Day atop its defensive tackle list, and Wednesday the Irish landed the five-star prospect from Indianapolis' Warren High.
Day made the decision after deliberation with his family.

"He really wanted to do his official visits," Warrren Central coach John Hart said. "But I think as recruiting blows up, Notre Dame didn't have a lot of (slots) left, and always kept him in a very personal relationship.

"I thought Michigan did a fabulous job. Iowa did a terrific job. LSU did a great job. There was a lot of great people involved in the recruiting process. Virginia Tech was phenomenal. But I think it was the idea he might lose the place he wanted to go to the most out of all those great schools, so it was a smart decision on his part."

He was actually told he will be a DE, although he could probably play any spot on the line whether we are running a 3 or 4 man front. This versitility is why the staff loves him.

From what others are speculating, the answer appears to be yes. From what I've read, Day is a DE prospect with some flexibility to play inside. Schutt is primarily a NT prospect and Jones is a DE prospect that also happens to be a pretty good OT prospect as well.

08-04-2011, 08:46 AM
no question we would take Day, Jones and Schutt. Jones could end up on the OL and it may require a spot from some other position but a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

From the quick video that Rivals had on Day, he is quick as a cat..a little out of control but very impressive. This is really great 'cause i think we really needed to land at least 2 of the 3 guys i just mentioned at a minimum.

08-04-2011, 09:16 AM
I changed my desires for ND getting him after The Opening when young Mr. Day dominated so thoroughly. I had previously hoped ND would get Jones or Goldman or Watkins before Day. After he schooled so many at that event and hearing all of the comments from players and coaches about him, I changed to Day, then Jones before Shutt.

IrishIllustrated.com - Day makes strong first impression (http://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1350828&PT=4&PR=2)

Either Sheldon Day hasn’t had his welcome-to-college moment or he’s already blocked it out. Asked if he’d been victim to the initiation of an upperclassman pancake block during spring practice, Day blanked.

“I don’t think so, but I might have, I might have not,” Day laughed. “I don’t know.”

The best guess is Day has kept on his feet this semester as Notre Dame’s no-fuss early enrollee out of prep powerhouse Warren Central in Indianapolis. Day committed to the Irish last summer and never wavered. Now he’s working with the second team defensive line, even if injuries have helped elevate him.

Still, Day’s straight-forward approach to football has turned a few heads around South Bend already. While it’s not clear if the Irish will need the former four-star recruit to go this fall, he’s practicing and studying like it. Day is already taking a Notre Dame calculus class to help get into the top-ranked Mendoza College of Business.

“He’s way ahead of where we’d thought he would be in his technique and everything,” said defensive line coach Mike Elston. “He’s a solid, solid player right now. Just still being a senior in high school, he’s really showed some good technique.”

If Day’s acclimation into the depth chart has been a slight surprise, he’s submersion into Notre Dame has come with the standard ups and downs. He’s already made a couple trips home to catch his breath. His mother, Carol Boyd, has made the drive up US-31 too to help her son get comfortable.

Day is also rooming with Gunner Kiel, Notre Dame’s other remaining early enrollee, which the defensive end said has helped him get situated. He’s resisted reminding Kiel that he should have been named Indiana’s Player of the Year over the quarterback.

“When you have another early enrollee that comes in, I guess that makes the transition a little easier because you have somebody else to talk to,” Day said. “When you’re going through the slump they’re probably going through it too, you can talk to each other and work your way out of the slump.

“I feel like I shouldn’t look back, but sometimes when you’re in your slump you kind of look back and say, ‘Dang, I could have done this or I could have done that,’ but I’m looking forward, like a positive attitude. I feel I made the right decision (to enroll early).”

The 6-foot-2, 286-pound defensive lineman could give the Irish a swing player between end and nose guard down the road, but Day’s lessons start with the four technique on the outside. An outgoing honors student in high school, it appears Day is starting to let his personality trickle out too, even if he’s still getting settled.

“Sheldon Day is a character,” said Stephon Tuitt. “He’s a character. He’s a great player too as well. I see him learning the defense. He’s coming along as a player.”

As much as Day is playing catch-up to Tuitt and Aaron Lynch this spring, he does have the advantage of coming from a talent-rich high school program. Warren Central produced eight BCS conference signees last cycle after pumping out three the year prior. The Warriors upcoming senior class includes four-star linebacker Tim Kimbrough, who visited Notre Dame last weekend.

That local talent meant Day had an idea of the players he’d see in college before he actually got to college.

“I love it up here,” Day said. “It’s harder than what I thought. I came in with a positive attitude and I’ve still got my positive attitude and it’s just fun. Great experience.”

Sheldon Day looks like a star in the making

The Dynamic Duo of Louis Nix and Stephon Tuitt might just become a power trio. That’s because of the emergence of sophomore defensive end Sheldon Day, who has opened more than a few eyes with his work over the summer and in fall camp. After playing limited snaps as a true freshman, Day has stepped in for Kapron Lewis-Moore and is quickly looking like a start in the making.

Don’t believe the hype? Well, it sounds like head coach Brian Kelly does.

“I mean, I know all the talk is about Nix and Tuitt, but I can tell you, Sheldon Day is… just watch the film,” Kelly said. “His first step quickness, he’s an impressive football player. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody on our football team right now. He’s as impressive of a football player that we have on our defense.”

Considering Notre Dame has two guys up front that might be top 15 picks in the NFL Draft, Day’s trade value, even if it is in a strict hypothetical, is really impressive.

One of the things that’s probably most interesting about Day is the fact that he’s not cut from the traditional mold you’d expect in Kelly and Bob Diaco’s defense. While Day had the type of elite offers that made him a recruit that was targeted on the national level (LSU and Florida don’t come after too many kids from Indianapolis), at 6-foot-2, 280-pounds, he was a bit of a tweener on the Irish defense, especially when he was being pursued as a defensive end.

Perhaps it was because he lacked the star-power of other big names like Tuitt, Aaron Lynch or Ishaq Williams, but Day flew under the radar heading into South Bend, even though he was doing things early in his career that clearly showed a capacity for excellence. Consider how quickly Day has moved into the role of an every snap player.

“Right now if there’s an eight-play drive, he does not come out of the game,” Kelly said Monday. “He’s the one that does not come out of the game. His work volume, his ability to go. His pass rush ability. He’s an outstanding football player.”

Just about every coach has raved about Day. Defensive line coach Mike Elston speaks highly of Day, reportedly raving about his skills at the coaches clinic. Kelly has called Day one of the most difficult blocking assignments along the defensive line, and a year in the weight room will only enhance that skillset.

If anything, Day is a nice reminder that while this staff recruits to a profile, it’s more art than science when they look at film and project a player. Last year, Prince Shembo was one of the team’s most productive players, all while looking like a player that Notre Dame wouldn’t have even recruited on paper because of his physical profile alone.

With offensive line coaches committing plenty of bodies to blocking preseason All-Americans Nix and Tuitt, Day could find himself in quite a few spots to take advantage of one-on-one match-ups. That could mean Day receives star billing sooner than later.

Day Excited to Return After Injury
Andrew Owens

After more than a month of recovery after suffering a high ankle sprain at Purdue on Sept. 14, sophomore defensive end Sheldon Day is set to return to the field for game action this weekend against USC, and he couldn’t be more relieved.

“It’s more my ability to contribute more than anything [that I missed],” said. Day, who added that he was relegated to providing moral support to his teammates. “I didn’t feel like I could really push off and deliver a blow to my opponent so I’m feeling good this week and feeling like I can really impact this game.

“There’s always those moments where you’re like, ‘I can’t bear this.’ I wanted to be back out on the field with my brothers. I feel like from a mature standpoint that I would’ve hurt my team more being out there.”

Day came close to returning full-time to the Irish defense for the Oklahoma and Arizona State games before the bye week, but was not quite at full health. He suffered a setback during pregame warmups for the Sept. 28 Oklahoma game and even played one snap in the Arizona State game on Oct. 5 before realizing he would be more of a detriment than an aid to the team.

“I feel like I was physically and mentally prepared to play the [Oklahoma] game,” he said. “Just a minor tweak to where I didn’t feel comfortable or feel like I could give my team my best effort.

“[Against Arizona State], I definitely [thought I would play more], but I don’t want to keep setting myself backwards. I didn’t feel 100 percent.”

Day recorded seven tackles (one for loss) in three games before he “got rolled up under” against Purdue. In his absence, senior Kona Schwenke, sophomore Jarron Jones and freshman Isaac Rochell filled in, with the 6-foot-2, 290-pound end serving as a de facto player-coach.

“Yeah, I would like to say I was [doing some teaching],” he said. “Just things I saw if I was on the field I would communicate when they came back to the sidelines.”

Although fellow defensive linemen Louis Nix III and Stephon Tuitt receive most of the attention and accolades, head coach Brian Kelly praised Day as an invaluable member of the Irish front.

“First of all, he doesn't stay blocked,” Kelly said. “One of the things that makes a defensive lineman a great player is he gets off blocks. Sheldon gets off blocks and is a great pass rusher.

“He's a guy that early in the season was a great pass rusher and wasn't staying blocked. He'll figure into our game plan on Saturday.”

And for Day, that’s an important step in the right direction.

Spring ball may be all about new blood, but I don’t think any player has gotten more buzz from players and coaches than Sheldon Day.
