I was going to go to Notre Dame but went for the higher academic standards of Millersville University of Pennsylvania. I was going to be Catholic but I couldn't handle all of the kneeling.

Not ND grad, not irish, not catholic.. grew up in northern Indiana. Dad loves ND, bears, bulls and white sox. I've taken that love to "regular message board posting" heights

Raised Catholic, part of big catholic family, went to Catholic school, we were also the Fighting Irish. Also had many uncles who are Irish fans, one of which had season tickets and used to take me to the games. No to ND grad though, not smart enough, and wouldn't have had enough money anyway. I do have cousin who is in the band there right now though.

Cal State Fullerton for me as well. I was "gifted" growing up but filled out my own electives (PE aid, baseball coach aid) and never took AP courses when I had the opportunity. My aunt would have paid my way to anywhere I wanted. Instead I played baseball, basketball and football, was a "player", and ate my lunch and slept in class. The teachers were good with that because it meant I was not cracking jokes in class. "Unsolicited comments" was a common theme from my teachers to my parents. I showed up and got Bs. I wanted to get maried young so all that financial help taken off the table. I did JC then transferred to a state school. I payed my way (still am) through college and got married at 19.
I am over half Irish and I am Christian (not Catholic, I know Catholic is Christian though). My mom's dad was Irish Catholic and played tailback and ran track for ND, class of 39. He grew up in Plymouth, IN.

We talk a lot about the power of getting recruits on campus for a visit. I am no D-1 athlete but my grad school interview on campus blew me away. Such genuine people there. ND was one of my first applications... I didn't make anymore, no need.
I didn't know much about ND and that should give away that I am not Catholic.
As an aside, I like that the ND family extends beyond the alumni base.

I love this quote and greatly appreciate it. I feel like there are some (see NDNation) that see themselves as above the subway alums because they attented school there. Speaking to your point, I love the feeling of being welcomed by those that went to or currently attend the school. All those people are living my dream and when they are welcoming about it, it is much appreciated.
I can remember being in a bar in Chicago and a women's volleyball game was on tv. I don't remember who the Irish were playing but I was rooting for them like it was a football game. I never went to school there, but love the university.

Italian and Irish Catholic Hoosier. My grandfather was an avid fan and we grew up loving Notre Dame football and IU basketball. As a Ball State grad, we were granted a free pass to cheer for any of the other schools in the state due to our consistant suckage at any sport.
My best friend was at ND so I spent every weekend up there during college. Very good times and I came to love the campus as well as the football team.
So much so that I told my boys I was confiscating their future children at birth and raising them East German Olympic Athlete style so that at least one of the grandkids goes to Notre Dame:-)

I went to THE Olivet Nazarene University for undergraduate and UC (cincy) for my graduate degree... I am not catholic... I grew up in North Dakota and shocker wasn't a huge college sports fan. My roomate in college was from Mishiwaka(sp?) he took me to Moonlight madness when Pat Garrity was playing... I fell in love with the campus and college sports... I could not believe how well he moved with out the ball and you could just tell he was in a league of his own out there.. The Heismans hooked me on football and I have been an Irish fan ever since... so I missed the glory years and have seen one bowl win since becoming a fan... I think I may be the curse

Part Irish, apparently its all the parts that have to do with drinking Alcohol. The rest of me is German. I am Catholic lite. Grew up ever Sunday at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary and ever Wed night for CCD. Now I only attend church on the big holidays and pray to Touchdown Jesus ever Saturday. I attended California Univ of PA, yes there is a California in PA. My guess is it was founded by a bunch of lazy people that didn't want to take their wagons the whole way across the country to the actual California. There is also an Indiana Univ of PA, But I can't remember a time when I didn't Love ND.
Another thing that brought me close to ND was that we Played football against Ricky Watters my Senior Year in HS and we beat them, I was a DT. Tackled Ricky a bunch of Times. We actually stopped Ricky on the 1 yard line to win the game, have a great picture of that somewhere. Wish I was 6-2 and not 5-11, I probablly could have gone to ND with Ricky :(
Love The IRISH!!!

ND grad class of 2001 . My brother followed me to IN and is a double domer. My cousin also came out from WA to go to ND too.
I'm Catholic and my double domer brother is studying to become a priest. He receives his deaconate in January and is expected to take his final vows 1.5 years later.
Growing up, I liked ND football, but didn't love it. I ended up @ ND b/c I flipped a coin (other choice being Gonzaga in Spokane) and ND won the coin toss, so I went there. What a fortunate coin flip that was!!!

Irish Joe, I think that alumni and students love having a huge subway alumni base. I never got the feeling on campus that students felt above anyone. It is sad to hear that someone (NDNation) would ever convey that they are a bigger fan of ND b/c they slept in a dorm there. Having passionate fans regardless of how they came to love the school is one of the things that makes ND such a great place.

The people down talking subway alums are a) the vast minority b) often targeting people who don't 'get' ND, in their opinion. I think we can all ignore them easily enough.
En Dee, love the coin flip story. :D

I agree. I graduated from Indiana State on a full scholarship. I only earned a partial scholarship to Notre Dame and did not feel I could afford tuition so I only looked at full rides for state schools in the Midwest. It is a regret I carry with me but I met my beautiful wife at ISU (also a ND fan) and couldn't be happier. More importantly, I am raising three wonderfully blessed (academically and athletically) children who will ALL attend Notre Dame come hell or high water. :)
I love the campus, the students, the alumni, and the football team. All have given me many great memories, respect when visiting the campus (because I treat them with respect), and a special feeling that anyone can love and support this great institution for their own reasons. I am one mark short of being Catholic as well since we are all about full disclosure on this site these days. I was raised in the Lutheran church. That's almost Catholic according to my pastor. Just a little less guilt......

La Salle College grad and never considered applying to ND
because the academic standards were higher than my high
school grades.
Son applied to ND. Told him to frame the acceptance
letter as a memento since I didn't have the money to
send him to a private college. Several days later, he
received notice of an academic scholarship which brought
the cost into the range of Pa State Colleges.
Growing up, it was a family thing to watch ND football.
It was the only time we were allowed to eat in the liv-
ing room.

Half Catholic. Went to Indiana University Southeast. Ive been an ND fan since I was a little kid, my brother was a fan. I still remember my mom and dad let me stay up to watch the Colorado game in 89 or 90 and couldnt go to sleep after the phantom holding call. Im lucky enough to live close enough that I can travel to ND games a couple of times a year. There is nothing like a game in South Bend, I love the Irish.
