Huh. I know I was bezerk online with that class. I must have been spreading my time around between IrishEnvy, uhnd and ... I don't think Domer Domain. I don't bother with any other site (as far as message boards). Why would you?

Here's to Hughes. This is a kid who had to overcome all sorts of adversity just to get into Notre Dame and although he did not have a truly great career he always stood for the finest traditions of Notre Dame both on and off of the football field.

Eveyone who has followed ND over the last 4 years will remember the frequent huuuuuges! cheers at ND Stadium, but my two fondest memories of Robert will be the 2007 Duke game where he almost singlehandely carried a 1-9 ND team to a home victory in the freezing rain to ensure that ND had at least one home victory that season, and of course the final TD drive to beat USC on Saturday.

Gotta say my favorite Hughes memory is a sad one. The weekend after his brother (I think) passed away. The coaches and players boarded buses and went to the funeral. Hughes scored a TD that weekend. Was touching. Don't remember the game.

I love Hughes as well, and was one that had him as my avatar since his recruitiment.

I like that he is one badass dude who is humble, at least to the public. No facebook or twitter account to my knowledge.

This article is a good example of why Hughes has always been a fan favorite and one of my favorite players as well. He is a great example of a true ND student athlete. He is able to see beyond the football field, which helped him help the team when they needed it the most.

( on a side note, it is nice to hear that the staff continued to help him in the eyes of the NFL also)

Ex-Hubbard, Notre Dame RB Hughes stays home with Bears

By Brian Hamilton Tribune reporter

2:49 p.m. CDT, July 26, 2011

Former teammates scattered far and wide following the end to the NFL lockout. Robert Hughes, meanwhile? It's possible he signed a contract without signing a change of address form.

The former Hubbard and Notre Dame running back starts his professional career with a return trip home, having inked a free-agent deal with the Bears on Tuesday.

Hughes went undrafted after amassing 1,392 yards and 15 touchdowns over four up-and-down years with the Irish, though he did cap that career by scoring the winning touchdown against USC last season and then adding 81 yards in a Sun Bowl triumph over Miami.

The 5-foot-11, 245-pounder likely has to shift to fullback at the NFL level.

You cant blame Robert for signing with his hometown team but i aint too sure if a Mike Martz offense suits his skillset.

Glad to see the Bears sign Robert. He was one of my favorite players and I loved to yell "Hughes" after his runs.

Best of luck to him. It was a bumpy ride at ND but he stuck with it and I wish all the best to him.

Great news for Robert who will always be one of my favorites, both for what he did in the clip below and for how he singlehandedly gave ND it's only home victory of the 2007 season and made the freezing rain that day almost bearable.
