Notre Dame moved one step closer to the mythical recruiting national championship when Irish defensive coordinator Corwin Brown locked up fellow Chicago native and blue chip linebacker prospect Steve Filer.
Filer, a standout inside linebacker from the historic Mt. Carmel Caravan football program, will bring a hard nosed and hard working Midwestern approach to the Fighting Irish linbacking corps. Steve is an agressive, sure tackler that loves to hit and punish opposing ball carriers and will be a key cog in the new 3-4 defensive scheme that Coach Brown is putting in place.
Ranked a five star prospect and fourth overall middle linebacker prospect by the Scout recruiting service and four star by Rivals, Filer is unquestionably one of the top linebacker prospects in the entire country. Steve selected the Irish over his other finalist Ohio State, as well as Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and several other Big Ten programs.
The Irish class now stands tall at 19 verbal commitments with several other big time prospects such as Ryan Williams (RB, Virginia) and Etienne Sabino (LB, Florida) visiting campus in the near future.
Welcome to the Notre Dame family, Steve!

Memories of last year when Benn, Little, and Trattou bolted the Irish just before signing day still linger, so while I am overwhelmed at all these verbals the staff needs to keep all these dudes in the fold. What a difference Corwin Brown has made so far.

we're doing great. more importantly, we are filling our major needs. in the end, though, it looks like OSU is shaping up to have an absolutely MONSTER class, so, i don't think we will hold the top spot throughout the entire process. regardless, though, we are getting our coaches' top picks... and that is the important thing.

The nice thing is we just won 2 head to head battles with OSU. I would have laughed in your face if you had said that during the TY era. The entire irish staff needs to be commended for the job they have done this year.

Well... this wasn't really a "battle" by the time it ended. We weren't atop the list from Day 1, but our staff did a great job of staying on this kid, and making him feel comfortable. If he felt good enough to make a decision without having met Jim Tressel face to face, that tells you something about how far behind OSU was by the time Steve said he'd make a summer time pledge.
This was a textbook recruitment. Offered a Midwestern kid Sept. 1st, stayed on him the whole way through without hounding him, overcame the initial bias towards Big 10 schools, and came away with him before the calendar flipped to July. Thats exactly what Notre Dame needed.
And after hearing the reports I read over at DD, gotta say this was a great job by Rob Ianello. We assume this was all Corwin, but our near and dear recruiting coordinator offered this kid months before Corwin was hired - this was his baby. The whole staff played their part I'm sure, but Rob made sure to be there from start to finish with this kid. Great work.
I haven't seen yet, did IUB change his signature yet to "Floyd or Bust"?

Exactly. Consider this a battle with OSU is like OSU folks considering it was a batter for Brewster, Stoneburner or Adams. Don't cry for OSU, they're going to end up with a Top 5 class.
The only legit head-to-head batter between Notre Dame and Ohio State has been for Danny McCarthy.

Nice pickup for the Irish. One less recruit the coaches need to worry about. They are able to focus on the few remaining offers instead of what occured last year. What a difference a few months make. A job well done!
Personally, I'd like to see two more WR. So let's get 'em!

Nice sig. I think you've cured my fever.
Way to join the Irish train, Filer. I completely agree with IrishCalves about his recruitment, it was played perfectly by the staff. I'm glad we can go into Chicago and pick up top prospects again.

Why don't you do your job and 'Filer' it under the 'commit section'...
