This is a new one for me. I don't recall in recent history at least an instance where the Irish have offered a recruit from New Mexico, but they have now. Hegarty had an impressive performance at the San Antonio Junior Combine which landed him on the Rivals 250 Watch List. His offer list reflects that status.

In addition to the Irish, he has offers from Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Stanford, San Diego State, and HARVARD. Texas is also said to be close to offering, which means USC is probably not far behind.

The Harvard offer tells you one thing, and that along with some solid family backing for the Irish should give ND a very good shot here.

Hegarty will be at the Texas Junior day this weekend where he is expected to be offered.

He will also be traveling to South Bend for the 3/20 ND Junior Day.

With Greenlea grabbing the 5th OL spot at Texas it is doubtful that Mack Brown will take a 6th OL recruit unless it was Christian Westerman who is probably higher on their board than Matt Hegerty.

I think we stand a good chance if he visits.

Cal and Nebraska have offered.

http://www.statesman.com/sports/longhorns/texas-adds-pair-of-juniors-to-2011-recruiting-299157.html

Highly sought offensive line prospect Matt Hegarty of Aztec, N.M., said he received an offer from Texas Saturday but wants to take trips to Notre Dame and the University of California. The Longhorns, now with five offensive line pledges, might hold one more slot for either Hegarty or Christian Westerman of Chandler, Ariz., an earlier visitor.
Hegarty said he "talked about the time frame a little bit," with Texas coaches.
"I'm going to decide things pretty quick," said Hegarty . " Everything was pretty great. The staff was real classy about the way they handled things."

In addition to his current impresive offer list, Hegarty has added recent offers from Texas Tech, UCLA and U$C.

Junior OT Matt Hegarty (Aztec, N.M.) is headed to junior day at Notre Dame this weekend. The Fighting Irish are one of 18 offers for the 6-foot-5, 270-pound tackle who has the versatility to play anywhere along the line. His other offers are Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, Florida State, Minnesota, San Diego State, New Mexico and Harvard.

Impressions from the ND 3/20 Junior Day.

The visit exceeded Hegarty’s expectations and those expectations were probably pretty high coming in. The Irish will most likely be in his Top 5 when he produces a cut-down list.

Not just the talent we are bringing in excited me it's more the fact that we have coaches who can teach them how to grow and develope as olineman. That way more important to me but I am glad to see us bringing in talent levels as high as these kids. Keep up the hard work coach, we appreciate it and love the commintment.

Here is an update on him from ISD which clears up that missed visit on Monday I posted about in the Spring Evaluation thread:

http://www.irishsportsdaily.com/blogs/steves-blog

Notre Dame is one of the schools recruiting ESPN 150 Watch List offensive tackle and future U.S. Army All-American Matt Hegarty (Aztec, N.M./Aztec) the hardest, and on Monday, he was one of the first prospects the Irish staff went to go see to start the spring evaluation period.

Unfortunately, the 6-foot-5, 265-pound Hegarty wasn’t there. The blue-chipper had travel issues returning from his brother’s wedding over the weekend.

“Coach (Ed) Warinner actually stopped by (the school on Monday), but unfortunately I was stuck out of town. Didn’t get to see him, but coach (Kerry) Cooks is coming next week, and coach Warinner might come.

“I thought that was pretty meaningful for him to stop by on the first day, but again it was a bummer I couldn’t be there.”

Hegarty holds scholarship offers the likes of Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, Nebraska, California, Arizona, Arizona State and Northwestern. He says he hasn’t narrowed down his list, and also said he could visit Notre Dame again this summer.

“Nothing is definite,” Hegarty stated. He visited the Irish campus for the first time for the program’s March 20th junior day. “We’ll just have to see.”

Blue-Chipper Matt Hegarty Commits To ND
Written by Steve Wiltfong
Wednesday, 28 April 2010 22:57

ESPN 150 Watch List recruit and future U.S. Army All-American offensive tackle Matthew Hegarty (Aztec, N.M./Aztec), has confirmed with Irish Sports Daily that he has verbally committed to Notre Dame, choosing the Irish over a slew of other scholarship offers from nearly all the nation’s best programs.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Hegarty becomes the ninth verbal commit to pledge to head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame in the class-of-2011, and the third offensive tackle, joining fellow ESPN 150 Watch List prospects Jordan Prestwood (Plant City, Fla./Plant City) and Conor Hanratty (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan).

“I did commit,” Hegarty wrote ISD in a text message.

Hegarty visited Notre Dame for the first and only time on March 20th for junior day. He also considered scholarship offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, California, Florida State, LSU, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Texas, UCLA and USC.

"After taking a few days to just think about everything, I came to the decision of Notre Dame because they are truly the complete package," Hegarty said. "Their academics are excellent, the football heritage is incredible, and the situation couldn't be any better. I enjoy the spread, and look forward to playing tackle for the Irish."

Check back with IrishSportsDaily.com for more on Hegarty’s verbal commitment on Thursday morning.

could be him, Cook, or even Richardson or Cyrus (LMFAO, yeah right). Brey Cook recognizes that ND has a serious need at his position, so who knows. I see a race between Cook and Richardson. Richardson plans on coming on up to ND in a couple weeks. Going to be interesting who gets that last spot.

Offensive tackle Matthew Hegarty (Aztec, N.M.) became the ninth prospect to commit to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish late Wednesday night. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound versatile prospect becomes the fourth offensive lineman to pick Notre Dame joining big time tackle prospect Jordan Prestwood (Plant City, Fla.), guard Conor Hanratty (New Canaan, CT) and tackle Tony Springmann (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger).

"After taking a few days to think about everything, I came to the decision of Notre Dame because they are truly the complete package," Said Hegarty via text message. When Matthew Hegarty attended the U.S. Army National Combine last season, he saw a map that showed where each prospect was from and he quickly noticed there weren't too many pins sticking out in New Mexico.

Hegarty made himself nationally known at the Army combine.
Not traditionally a football hotbed, Hegarty was then motivated even more to prove he's not only a standout player but someone worthy of U.S. Army All-American Bowl recognition.

It didn't take long for Hegarty, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound offensive tackle from Aztec, N.M., to earn his Army game invitation and Monday morning at his high school he was presented with his game jersey.

From last season's combine to the game that will be played in just a couple months, Hegarty is thrilled about his selection and ready to prove once again that he can compete at the highest level.

"It's a really big honor to be selected," Hegarty said. "I had a good showing down at the combine and some of those other guys were selected to the game. The competition is just great and it's good to get to be a part of that. It will only make me better to go against some of these top guys.

"I'm definitely looking forward to the game. It should be a blast seeing all those guys especially a few of the guys going to Notre Dame that I talk to. It will be a good time to just see them down there. I feel really honored to be able to represent my town and my state and to just go up there and be able to play."

At the time of the Army combine, Hegarty had six offers and Rivals.com recruiting analyst Barry Every wrote soon after that Hegarty would get 25-plus offers once college coaches could locate Aztec, N.M., on the map. Rivals.com rates Hegarty fifth at offensive tackle, No. 40 nationally and tops in the New Mexico state rankings.

College coaches quickly found the town that's tucked away in the northwest corner of the state and major programs came calling for Hegarty, who said townspeople who know about his Army recognition have certainly embraced the honor.

"I'm glad I put them on the map in that sense," Hegarty said. "The community really has supported me. The people that know about it at least have embraced it so far. They've been really cool about lending their support for it."

The recruiting process didn't take long for Hegarty, who committed to Notre Dame in late April.

As Every predicted, numerous teams from across the country got involved in Hegarty's recruitment including both Arizona schools, LSU, USC, Oregon, Nebraska, Texas and many other powerhouses.

But Hegarty felt most comfortable with Notre Dame and even with the recent Irish struggles said that he's sticking firm with his commitment.

Lots of people know about Hegarty from little Aztec, N.M., and a lot of coaches became aware of him after the Army combine. He'll play in front of a national audience in the Army game and will gain even more notoriety once again competing against many of the nation's top prep standouts.

"I had done well at some camps in the past but I wasn't on the radar a lot," Hegarty said. "At the combine I really solidified my position out there. That's what I really liked, going out there and competing against some really good guys and it was just a blast."

thanks. I wouldn't have wanted to skip the second half of my senior year of HS either, but then again, I wasn't exactly a top flight athletic recruit (or an athletic recruit at all) coming out of HS.

I'm retracting this; per ISD, Hegarty told Kelly he's not enrolling early any longer. Not loving this development.

Is he waffling on his committment? He seemed pretty solid. He's our best OL in this class, i'd hate to lose this kid.

There is nothing wrong with this. I read the article and there is no chance he is decommitting. You can't blame a kid for wanting to enjoy his last semester of high school. He was never sure about early enrollment but this guy is Irish all the way.

I agree!

This guy is a lineman, he can get on Longos Program and work at home. He is good but he won't be getting playing time his freshman year. No need for an EE. Let him enjoy his High School career and then he can enjoy his ND career. Personally guys that are challenging for spots immediately as Freshman, should look to EE. Skilled Positions, positions of need/depth.

An athlete that EE's does not have more of a commitment to ND than one who does not. Hegarty will sign at ND, and by the time he is a Sophmore Junior, he will be ready to contribute. We are starting to have depth at the line and that is something we have needed.

Since I thought that ND limited the number of EE's each year (5?), it also opens up an EE slot for someone else to use.

I think tuitt and carrico have been mentioned. Lynch and Prestwood were supposed to be ee, as was hegarty and, at one time, Brindza. I think I've read that if he comes, Ishaq would be EE. We're actually not pushing the ND-imposed limit of 5 any longer with the FSU decommits.

I tell you what, every time I hear one of the ND commits being interviewed (with the exception of Chris Martin who was FOS) I'm impressed with the quality of these guys.

Hegarty said on Power Hour that he wanted to enjoy his senior year. With the linemen coming back he didn't feel a rush to get to ND and was willing to wait a year to see the field and just get better.

I dog Mike Frank for his production values (hire an AV geek please!) but the recruits do an excellent job on his show.

Matthew Hegarty is getting another physical for a knee injury he suffered playing hoops a few weeks back and he might not be able to play in the game.

http://www.irishsportsdaily.com/recruiting/notre-dame-football-recruiting/3923-hegarty-shines-

On Monday, Notre Dame offensive line commit Matt Hegarty (Aztec, N.M./Aztec) struggled through a rough day of practice for the West squad. Not only was Hegarty battling a knee injury he suffered while playing basketball three weeks ago, he had to play with brand new equipment. Hegarty arrived safely in San Antonio, but his equipment remained in limbo.

On Tuesday, Hegarty’s equipment arrived in tact, and the five-star offensive linemen picked up his play. “I felt a lot better,” said the standout tackle. “I had my own shoulder pads and knee braces and everything so I was a lot more comfortable. The trainer threw some tape on my knee, which helped.”

The comfort level Hegarty felt in his own pads showed on the practice field Tuesday. Hegarty had the most impressive day of any West offensive lineman during Tuesday’s practices. After limping through Monday’s practice, Hegarty was back to the dominant play that made him one of the nation’s highest ranked offensive linemen. The Aztec standout excelled in pass protection, using his quickness off the ball and agility to consistently mirror opposing ends. Hegarty also flashed a solid punch and the ability to reset his hands and continue to work as defenders tried second and third moves in an attempt to get past Hegarty; it rarely worked out well for those lined up against the future Notre Dame lineman.

Hegarty was the talk of the morning practice, but the self-critical lineman did not believe he was as dominant as he would have liked. “It’s funny, because a couple times now I’ve heard that people thought I did a good job,” laughed the 6-foot-5 left tackle. “I felt crappy today in terms of how I felt out there, and maybe that was my mind set.

“I was definitely pumped about getting out there and playing though,” continued Hegarty. “I feel like I’m about seventy-five percent right now, so I guess that’s the feeling I had. I am hard on myself sometimes.”

ESPN.com’s No. 24 ranked player noted that he could tell his ability to drive off the ball was hampered by his knee injury. “It just doesn’t feel like I am able to fire off the ball on all cylinders,” explained Hegarty. “It (knee) is still tender, but I’m trying to work through it. The thing I noticed was I am having trouble driving as far as the injury goes. I was having trouble today getting some push off the knee.”

But Hegarty was not going to miss the opportunity to compete and show his skills. “I just wanted to get in and get a lot of reps today,” said Hegarty.

After finishing his senior season in the New Mexico state title game, Hegarty was looking forward to showing his skills against the nation’s best players. The difference in talent was noticeable early on for the Aztec star. “The main factor I was noticing was the speed of these guys,” said Hegarty of the athletic West defenders. “I think any day most linemen would tell you they would rather go against a big guy than a speed guy. The more speed you have the more ready you have to be to account for everything.”

It is not all business for the future Notre Dame lineman. One of the great things about these types of all-star events is the ability for these players to meet and speak with players who are going through similar experiences. “There are great guys all over the place,” said Hegarty of his fellow Army All-Americans. “It’s kind of fun to be able to relate to some of these guys and talk to them about some things. I’m generally low key about what I’ve done back home from a recruiting standpoint. I get to talk to some of these guys about coaches and visits and stuff.

“Every now and then I just look around and imagine it’s like a small taste of college,” explained the five-star tackle. “All these guys are really talented.”

One player Hegarty has bonded with in San Antonio is fellow Notre Dame commit Stephon Tuitt (Monroe, Ga./Area), who is playing defensive end for the East squad. “I had a pretty good time hanging out with Tuitt,” said Hegarty of his future teammate. “He’s a fun guy. He’s kind of quiet at first, but once you get him opened up he’s a lot of fun. I wanted to get a feel for him and get to know him. I also wanted him to get a feel for me and know he has a buddy out here. I always look to make a new friend that’s coming in with this class.”

Hegarty has already bested Tuitt in ping pong, with George Atkinson next on his ping pong hit list. But Tuitt has vowed retribution.

COMMENTS: Hegarty was easily the best offensive linemen for the West squad on Tuesday and the most impressive linemen on either squad. But it is still early to really start ranking the various linemen. Hegarty got beat on two plays that I saw. On each play he lost his base and allowed an end to beat him to the edge. When Hegarty’s footwork was working properly he was impossible to beat on the edge. He showed very good quickness in protection and did a great job mirroring opposing defensive ends. Opposing ends were forced to use second and third moves in an attempt to beat Hegarty, to no avail. What was encouraging was how well Hegarty performed in the run game when he lined up at left guard. He got a very good push inside against bigger and stronger players. Hegarty also performed very well on the edge in the run game as a tackle as well. As long as he can stay healthy during the week, I expect him to continue his strong play. Hegarty is the ideal fit for Brian Kelly’s offense.

Recruiting Week In Review
Sunday, 30 January 2011 21:36 Joe Bradshaw

With National Signing Day just days away, Irish recruitniks are eagerly awaiting news that letters of intent from all of the class of 2011 verbal commitments have reached the Notre Dame football offices. Of course, the Irish coaching staff is working very hard to be certain that transpires as well. Last week, Irish Sports Daily spoke to one of the verbally committed recruits that is eagerly looking forward to signing day. ISD also spoke to 2012 recruit that is just beginning to hear from the Notre Dame staff. What have you been missing by not being a member of Irish Sports Daily?

Matt Hegarty, OT, 6-5, 280, Aztec High School, Aztec, NM: For Hegarty, receiving his letter of intent from Notre Dame really brought home for him that the recruiting process was nearly over. It also renewed his excitement to be part of the Irish football recruiting class of 2011.

“I’m excited absolutely,” said Hegarty of signing day. “I was hanging out at the house eating some cereal and the Fed Ex guy drove up. Inside was my letter of intent and I was like ‘Wow this is really happening.’ Having the letter of intent come in helps seal the deal on it. It just reminds me that it’s all a legitimate deal now. It’s go time.”

Hegarty continued.

“It got me excited again. I am still kind of coming off such a great feeling on how we (Notre Dame) ended the year with a bowl win; knowing that this signing is just another step and making it real.”

Hegarty plans to be in Texas on National Letter of Intent day for the USA vs. the World football game. Unfortunately, a knee injury he sustained during the U.S. Army All-American game will prevent him from participating. Still, the organizers of the game wanted him there. Hegarty plans to go, participate in the faxing of the letter of intents and also hopes to get to know the other four Irish commits participating in the game a bit better.

“I think it’s going to be fun,” said Hegarty of being in Texas for the game. “I’m glad that (Anthony) Rabasa is going to be down there. I am looking forward to seeing all of the guys. I am going to be walking around making sure no one flips.”

Once Hegarty’s basketball season ends, he plans to begin getting ready for Notre Dame and Camp Longo in June.

“I am going to finish up basketball in the next month or so,” Hegarty explained. “After that I am going to focus on getting back to being healthy. I plan to get myself in the best possible shape so I can hit the ground running in June with Coach Longo.”

Hegarty is very excited about the recruiting class of which he is such an integral part.

“I’m proud to be part of this group of guys and there is a lot of defensive talent coming in,” Hegarty opined. “A lot of people knocked our defense and they handled themselves well this year. It will only go up from here. It sure will make practice battles exciting.”

Matt Hegarty Update
Dan Murphy

Irish sophomore Matt Hegarty has been cleared to resume full football activities starting March 15, according to his family.

Hegarty had two holes in his heart surgically repaired in December after suffering a mini-stroke a month earlier. Doctors were optimistic that Hegarty would fully recover from the surgery in time for spring football and it appears he is still on track to do so.

The 6-foot-5, 296-pound lineman is one of three players in contention to take over for Braxston Cave as the starting center for the Irish. He has been lifting with his teammates since early February and says he is back to squatting in the 500-pound range.

Hegarty will remain on medication until March 15. Doctors will take another look at his heart sometime in May to make sure there are no problems with the patches on his heart.

Matt Hegarty leaving Fighting Irish
Matt Fortuna [ARCHIVE]

ESPN.com | March 4, 2015
Notre Dame offensive lineman Matt Hegarty will play football elsewhere in 2015, the senior told ESPN.com on Wednesday in a statement.

The 6-foot-4.5, 295-pound Hegarty had overcome a stroke in 2012 to become a regular on the Fighting Irish's offensive line, starting 11 of 13 games last season at center and guard.

The Aztec, New Mexico, native is expected to graduate in May. He would be eligible to play at another school this coming season.

"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that the Notre Dame Football program has afforded me," Hegarty said. "I want to thank Notre Dame, my coaches, my teammates and friends at school for the four great years I had at Notre Dame. I also want to thank the Notre Dame Nation for all of their support over the years. My focus has been to pour myself into everything that I have done at ND. I have worked hard and have always done everything that was asked of me. Recently my coaches informed me that they wanted me to change positions. They also explained that with many younger players in the wings, they wanted to develop them more heavily in the rotation-- a need that I understand and appreciate.

"Unfortunately, I have already had to miss a precious amount of football battling back from my stroke, and I value every rep and opportunity going into my final year of college ball that much more. My goal is to contribute this season, continue to develop my skills and pursue my dream of playing in the NFL. Because of this goal, I have asked for a transfer to play at another school where I can contribute more on the field. Notre Dame has amassed formidable depth on the O-line and have many very talented players to fill all positions.

"So I wish everyone at ND the best this year and especially to my 15 brothers on the offensive line as they prepare for the 2015 season."

The Irish still return four of five offensive line starters from their Music City Bowl win over LSU in December.

Switch back to guard from center, where he feels his best potential is to go to the next level. Moving back to guard he would have to battle with the youngsters and would probably get far fewer reps.
