Brother of current ND Freshman Zach, Nick has offers from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan State and Ball State along with interest from Notre Dame, Northwestern, Purdue, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Virginia. The Irish have not been heavily recruiting Nick, but as one of the top players in Indiana this year as well as being Zach’s brother, it seems likely that they will. If that leads to an Irish offer, ND would certainly seem to become one of Nick’s favorites.

Did we just offer Nick Martin?

According to his Scout Profile, it says we did - http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=4713904

and then there is this article that I can't read - http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=2&c=1008974&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2fnotredame.scout.com%2f2% 2f1008974.html

Plus if Martin does turn out to be TSV then Sampson has known for 2 months that he was going to flip so for him to say 50/50 in the interim was just more of the gamesmanship he has been displaying all season long with recruiting info.

This is a really important get. Not a high caliber recruit, and he'll probably need to hit the weight room for a while if he's at 260, but it certainly makes me feel better about 2012 to have more bodies available. 3 true lineman in Martin, Hanratty, and Hegarty gives us a lot more flexibility with Carrico and Springmann, though Lynch would help the other side of the ball as well in that regard.

He's virtually the same size as his brother was as a Senior in HS. By some accounts he is even more athletic than Zach. If that is the case I don't see him moving inside. Any OL who has an offer from Iowa is a high caliber recruit to me. If he is anywhere near the player his brother turned out to be this is a great pickup.

Now that the home stretch of the recruiting calendar is upon us, time for the latest information, as well as a few reminders about what goes on this time of year.

First off, a quick run down with what I have "heard" as of late. Keep in mind, this does not mean much, as recruiting is extremely fluid by nature.

Nick Martin -- Upon planning to write this section, it was going to be nothing new to report. With Martin's sudden commitment, however, Notre Dame landed a valuable offensive lineman that could likely play offensive tackle or offensive guard. Good pickup for the Irish.

Matt Hegarty's first start will be memorable, one way or another.

On Sunday afternoon Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly revealed that the hyperextended knee suffered by center Nick Martin against BYU had shown itself to be a "significant knee injury" that will shelve the junior for the rest of the season.

Hegarty filled in ably against BYU as Notre Dame rushed a season-high 47 times and the ground game amassed 235 yards in frigid, windy conditions. The Irish didn't allow a sack either, a statistical category where Notre Dame ranks second nationally.

All that will be tested at Stanford next weekend as the Cardinal rank third nationally in rush defense and eighth in sacks. On Notre Dame's last trip to Palo Alto, Tommy Rees got knocked out of the game as Irish quarterbacks were dropped five times.

That all puts pressure on Hegarty, who will be the second reserve forced into the starting lineup due to injury. Right guard Christian Lombard was shelved for the season by back surgery last month, forcing Steve Elmer and Conor Hanratty into action. Hanratty started against the Cougars, although Elmer played.

Hegarty has played sparingly in his three seasons in South Bend, taking a red-shirt year as a freshman and serving as a reserve as a sophomore.

"I thought he did a pretty good job," Kelly said. "He did not go against a four-down situation where he was unconvered. He had somebody on his nose virtually the entire three quarters he was in there.

"He snapped the ball without any mistakes. I thought the big series for him, we were backed up on our goal line and he did a very good job under those conditions. I thought he held his own. First time in there, he did a nice job."

Stanford will present a different challenge for Hegarty in dealing with a road atmosphere on top of the Cardinal defense. Both Chris Watt and Zack Martin complimented Hegarty's composure in the aftermath of the BYU win, with that mental edge even more critical while heading to the West Coast.

"I think Matt did a great job," Watt said "He really surprised me coming in. I'm so proud of the way he played."

Mark Harrell likely moves into the No. 2 center role, although Kelly said Hanratty or Watt could see time there.

LEADING FROM THE MIDDLE
Mar 20, 2015 | 02:19 pm
Pete SampsonEditor IrishIllustrated.com

Back in the middle of Notre Dame’s offensive line, Nick Martin feels at home, even if he can’t explain why. The Irish captain hopes to lead a talented group while picking up some NFL advice along the way.

Where Nick Martin (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8469477) came from and where Nick Martin wants to go stood on the sidelines of the Loftus Center on Wednesday morning. As Notre Dame (http://notredame.scout.com/) opened spring practice with Martin returned to the center position he vacated early last season, older brother Zack Martin (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=7889059) and former teammate Chris Watt (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8128699) watched.

The former Irish linemen had relocated their off-season workouts for a few days to South Bend, Zack Martin driving up from Indianapolis and Watt heading over from Chicago. Zack Martin went in the first round to the Dallas Cowboys (http://dal.scout.com/) last year and developed into a Pro Bowler. Watt went in the third round to the San Diego Chargers (http://sdg.scout.com/)as a guard, but took over the starting center job in November.

“You’re dumb if you’re not bouncing stuff off of them, not learning stuff from them,” Nick Martin said. “They’ve been there, been at the next level, having success.”

Now it’s the senior’s turn to emulate those former teammates who have the NFL road map.

Martin returned to center this off-season after shifting to guard last September when a hand injury and Notre Dame’s underwhelming start to the season up front forced a flip with Matt Hegarty (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=7587644). When Hegarty unexpectedly bolted Notre Dame this off-season for a shot to play center elsewhere, it meant Martin’s return to center came with added leadership responsibilities.

Martin not only has to pick up his old position, he has to help Quenton Nelson (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8469523) andAlex Bars (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8469383) too as they compete for the vacant left guard spot. With Hegarty, Notre Dame was set to return the most experienced line of the Brian Kelly era in career starts. Minus Hegarty, the line has a guard hole and a right tackle with one career start.

That doesn’t change Martin’s perspective on what kind of line Notre Dame returns under Harry Hiestand, entering his fourth season here.

“I think it’s an old line,” Martin said. “Ronnie Stanley (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8469546) coming back, started every game the last two years here, Steve Elmer in his third year, started a lot of games here and me. Mike McGlinchey (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8469480) started the bowl game but beyond that had the most reps out of anyone in practice. Obviously that guard spot you’ve got young guys, but they’re smart. Being surrounded by older guys being there, hopefully that eases that transition there.”

With his hand injury healed and the season-ending knee injury of two years ago long gone, Martin enters spring practice off a healthy off-season that helped him get over 300 pounds on Notre Dame’s official roster. He jumped six pounds to 301. Martin was the only senior lineman (fifth or fourth year) to make a weight jump since the season.

“It’s not that hard in the off-season, you’re working out and you’re eating a lot,” Martin said. “It’s nice to be able to eat a little bit. I don’t think (injuries) really did affect me. Injuries happen, you gotta play through them. You get that adrenaline going in games and you’re just rolling.”

Freshman Sam Mustipher (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8469505), who took a red shirt last season, will back up Martin. Early enrollee Tristen Hoge (http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=8&c=1&nid=8375506) slots as the No. 3 center. With Martin’s experience it makes spring practice as much about coaching up those underclassmen as refining his own game. It won’t be a surprise if Martin’s reps taper off as spring practice drags into April.“

Obviously I’ve got a lot of work to do, but I do think I can help Sam and Tristen as much as possible,” Martin said. “(Hoge) is a worker. He’s gonna do anything it takes, there’s no doubt about it.”

As for why Martin fits best at center, even Martin can’t explain it. Kelly described the shift as predicated on power at the guard position, where Nelson and Bars have more muscle than Hegarty. Getting more push was why Martin moved to guard last season, according to Kelly. With extra bulk at the position now, it’s freed Martin’s return to the middle.“

I never really played (center) until two springs ago,” Martin said. “Never thought I’d be able to snap the ball and block some one. I really like communicating, like being in the middle of things. I don’t know, I just enjoy it.”
