Our look at the defensive side of the ball begins with the defensive line, which had two performers that battled it out for the MVP. Coming away with the honor was sophomore Jack Lippert, 6-foot-5 and 216-pounds, of Central Dolphin. During the 1-on-1’s, Lippert showcased flawless technique and a very quick first step, while during the combine he had 18 reps at 185-pounds, a 26.5-inch vertical, 8’4.5” broad, 4.68 shuttle, and 4.82 40.

Lippert is a member of both the Rivals & Scout pre-season Top 100 for the Class of 2009. Unfortunately, Jack does not seem to have much interest in the Irish, and looks like he will end up close to home.

Big downgrade by Scout on this kid, who was in the previous Scout 100, and is dropped all the way to #267. It should be interesting to see if Rivals follows suit on their next update, as there is now a vast difference of opinion between the two boards on this guy. Rivals has him as the #1 WDE prospect, and #4 overall DE prospect in the country, while Scout now has him down at #26.

Rivals100 DE adds an offer

Rivals100 defensive end Jack Lippert has hauled in his second scholarship. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder landed his second offer and took a couple unofficial visits recently.

“I just visited Pittsburgh and Penn State for junior days,” he said. “I went to Penn State a week ago and Pittsburgh two weekends ago.

“Penn State was great. I got a lot of good information about the school environment and where the players stay. It was my first time meeting Coach Paterno personally. He is real witty for an old guy. I like the environment a lot too.

“As for Pittsburgh, it’s definitely a different city. Things were great out there. I liked Pitt a lot. Coach Wannstedt told me that he’s coming to visit me and he’s a really good guy. I like him a lot. I liked meeting the players too.”

Now Lippert holds two offers from Boston College and Pittsburgh.

Lippert took a pretty big downgrade in the new Rivals rankings as well, although he did not take as big of a dip there as he did on Scout. Still his drop from Rivals 100 #55 to Rivals 250 #129 was the third biggest drop of any previous Rivals 100 guys with a GH profile, exceeded only by Morgan Newton & Chris Bonds.

Another guy who continues to slide down the recruiting boards although to be fair to Lippert it was not his fault that Rivals originally had him way overrrated. He drops another 43 slots on Rivals and is no longer in the Scout 300.
