After a long and winding road for a relatively short period of recruitment, Dan McCarthy has ended his own personal saga by announcing today his verbal commitment to play football for the University Of Notre Dame. McCarthy’s recruiting journey took him to Palo Alto, CA, and all over Pennsylvania and the Midwest from State College to multiple trips to South Bend. In the end, it turned out that Dan’s easiest choice was also his best choice, and so like 17 others before him from the 2008 recruiting class, Dan McCarthy has also decided that there is no place like Notre Dame.

McCarthy who at 6’2”, 190 lbs. is the star quarterback at the storied program of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio. As a Junior, McCarthy led Cardinal Mooney to a 14-0 record and an Ohio State Championship. He passed for 1,910 yards and 21 touchdowns, and ran for 780 yards and an additional 8 TD’s. However, it is his punishing style of play on Defense that attracted him to some of the Top D-1 schools in the country to play Safety in college. Sources close to the Notre Dame football program have reported that Corwin Brown is highly enamored of McCarthy’s defensive abilities and felt strongly that Dan was a perfect fit for the Defensive Backfield style of play that Brown envisions for the revamped Notre Dame defense. This may explain why Notre Dame and Brown never wavered in their pursuit of McCarthy as the sole pure Safety offered in their 2008 recruiting class, even as it appeared that McCarthy's interest in the Irish may have been wavering. This strong interest and dedication by Corwin Brown to getting McCarthy on board has now paid off as another jewel in a staggeringly gifted 2008 defensive recruiting class.

In September of 2008, Notre Dame football fans will have the distinct pleasure of watching Dan and his older brother Kyle both suiting up to play in the Irish defensive backfield. Welcome to the Irish family does not really apply here, because Dan was already part of the family, so let’s just say, Welcome Home #18 of the class of 2008. It’s great to see you here.

They actually look a lot alike in some ways. Can you imagine looking at them side by side from the other side of a D-line that has EJ, Hunter, Newman, and Cwynar ready to kick your ass.

Man, what a haul they already have, add those 2 guys and it's positively scary.

Or is it, STONETASTIC.

Just to add something here. I know I've seen a few Irish fans compare McCarthy to Zibikowski(sp?).

IMO, they aren't similar safeties at all. Zibikowski is a SS(or if he's playing FS, then he's out of position) that plays the run really well, can hit harder than almost any safety in the country, and has a nose for balls over the middle. With that said, he also struggles a lot in regular pass coverage. Dan will very likely be a FS in college. If I had to compare him to someone I'm familiar with, it would probably be Eugene Clifford from last year. You can look up his film on Rivals or Scout(you may remember him from the Army All American game), but they're both of similar build, and they play safety in a similar way.

I think you're getting a helluva FS, that will play special teams his first year, then start every year after that IMO.

The comparisons aren't because of their potential college positions but rather what they were like in high school. Zibby was also a damn good QB.

Thats a pretty fair assessment Napoleon, Zibby does have trouble in pass coverage and is a beast against the run, if we can keep him healthy.

I'm looking very foward to seeing him and Smith as our two safeties, along with slaugther and blanton. That is going to be a damn good secondary.

We don't know who all is going to play when and where. I mean even in your statement, there's no Gary Gray, who was one of our 3 most highly rated defensive recruits from all of last year.

That in mind, I completely hear what you're saying. Gray and Smith from last year, McCarthy, Blanton, and Slaughter from this year - with the chance of another DB joining in on the fun (J. Brown?) - not to mention Walls, McNeil, S. Brown, Gordon, and Gaines... we're going to get 4 DB's that can start from that list of names, and they're going to be good ones. Things are looking very good in the defensive backfield for the future, which has to please the former DB-DC in Corwin.

Well, err... That's a bit nitpicking.

A. They both ran the same O in HS at QB.
B. They'll play roughly the same position in college.
C. "SPECIAL TEAMS, BABY!"

That about wraps it up.

to tell you the truth IrishCalves, I forgot about Gray. I, however, believe that as far as this year goes, the D-backfield recruiting is done, so if J. Brown joins into the mix, it will be as a WR, but I could be wrong, and I welcome me being wrong, especially if he is only 5'10''. I would rather have us get WRs that are over 6'0''. Gray will probably get a good shot next year, or the following when McNeil goes overseas to Rome for his year there for his degree. One this is for sure, I like the situation we are running into with our DB depth and all the great talent we are stocking up on in that area.

Buzz away, buckturds. PFFFT! One of Tez's homeboys thinks Filer will go to OSU. I think I'll go to sleep not worrying about my avatar on that news. I thought maybe it was Pocic again because he now seems to have an ax to grind as well.

Absolutely, every time I see that clip, I remember how great Zibby was in '05. If he is over his injuries and can bring that back for '07, ND's defense might surprise a few people.
