The fifth Nike 7 on 7 Passing Championship is on tap for Friday at Veterans Stadium.
It will provide a nice little preview of eight of the better high school football teams in Southern California for the upcoming season - minus pads, linemen (other than centers) and tackling, of course.
Joining Southern Section members Poly, Mater Dei, Edison, Mission Viejo, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), Crespi and Hart in the field is 2006 L.A. City champion Birmingham.
UCLA has commitments from five players scheduled to participate: quarterback Nick Crissman (Edison), safety E.J. Woods (Crespi), linebacker Donovan Carter and running back Milton Knox (Birmingham), and linebacker Patrick Larimore (Hart).
The University of Notre Dame already three commitments guys who will be on display at Vets in 6-foot-5, 230-pound Dayne Crist, the top-ranked quarterback in the California class of 2008, and his teammate at Notre Dame High, linebacker Anthony McDonald, and tight end Joseph Fauria (Crespi).
This would be a good time to correct the misconception on many fronts that Notre Dame High's athletic teams are also nicknamed "The Fighting Irish," a la the university that is located in South Bend.
The nickname for the teams that reside on the Notre Dame High campus in Sherman Oaks: the Knights.
Games begin at 11 a.m. Friday and wrap up with the title contest at approximately 3:15 p.m.
Admission couldn't be more of a bargain: you can walk into the place without parting with any cash.
