I asked this over on the Envy site, just want your opinions.

All the talk over the last few days about commits rethink their verbals has got me thinking. (I know you can just see the smoke!!! Don't remind me!!!) Is it the draw of playing with the talent that we have verbals from? Could it be CW and CB? Or a combination of both? Hypothetically, say the Trevster decides to decommit and pledge to ND....read this sentence again...we don't want any wildfires to come from this statement! (Hypothetically!!!! Then, continuing in this make believe world, say ND looses their first 4 games. (STOP RIGHT THERE!!!! ND WILL NOT LOOSE THEIR FIRST 4!!!!!!!!!) Will these grass is greener kids jump ship again...or do you think that it will be looked at as a rebuilding year and won't be weighted as heavily?

I think that the kids we have committed to ND, both real and hypothetical, understand what they have signed up for. They, like us, realize this may not be the best year for ND record wise, but I think they are looking deeper than that. With new offensive players at the skill positions and whole new def both in personnel and scheme, these recruits aren't expecting miracles. I think what they are looking for is how they are going to fit into the way ND plays football, and how they are going to make ND get better.
I don't think that ND has to win all their games, they just have to play hard and improve. I don't see many of the kids we have now jumping ship, they have all committed relatively early in the process, so I they understand how special ND is, and they aren't going to let one season determine their fate.

I think you answered most of your own questions. Not having high expectations for this years team should prevent any recruiting problems. Since it is likely the class will be locked down before a bowl game, an embarrassing loss should not cause any defections of potential commits ala Martin & Donald. It is clear that CW is taking no prisoners with these guys that are on board, they know that if they start looking their spot is in immediate jeopardy and it appears that ND has a backup plan in guys that are willing to wait for an ND offer if there are any defections. Personally, I do not believe there will be any this year.

As for the possibility of TR looking at ND, there are indications that it may be more unhappiness with certain happenings in Lincoln as opposed to suddenly wanting to get with ND. Nebraska's 2008 class thus far is not too shabby either, but the loss of a recruit of the caliber of TR would definitely hurt them.

I do not think there is anyone who is currently solidly committed to another team who is taking a look at the Irish because of the succes of the 2008 recruiting class. Soft guys like Jenkins, Gerrell Robinson, and Datone Jones, as well as uncommitted guys like McGuffie, and TJ Bryant may be showing more interest in ND because of the 2008 Class potential, but I do not believe anything will come of it with any of these guys. Most of the rumors that are flying around have absolutely no basis in fact. The only possibility might be Trev, but as I said that may be for a different reason than the grass is greener syndrome.

I agree with all of the above statements. Remember, CW is not a shuckster salesman. He is very blunt about expectations and what the future holds for them. They are not 'buying' into ND because of next year. The recruits would have to be fools (and they aren't) to expect that next year will be a challenge. Given the past 2 classes, I think the reason players like Brown are so excited is because of the future, not the present. I don't see us losing any this year. The grass is greener two years from now, not two months from now.
