Evans ends commitment to USC, likes Irish

ESPNU 150 WR Shaquelle Evans (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=55006) (Inglewood, Calif.) said he no longer wants to be listed as a soft commitment to USC. In fact, the talented wide out said the Trojans are not his top school any more. http://sports.espn.go.com/photo/2008/0818/recruit_evans_shaquelle_300.jpgShaq Evans has dropped his soft verbal to USC."Right now, I'm really feeling Notre Dame," Evans said. "I had a great trip back there and that's where I feel most comfortable. It's hard to explain but I just felt so at home at Notre Dame and I've never felt that way around any other school." Evans took an official visit to South Bend two weeks ago and said the high from the trip has yet to wear off. "I loved being around the players and the coaches," Evans said. "The game atmosphere was incredible, but like I said, the main thing for me was just that comfort level. I've always been told and always believed that you should go where you feel most comfortable and right now for me, that's Notre Dame." Following USC's demolition of Ohio State last month, Evans gave the USC coaches a commitment but said it was a soft commit, meaning he still wanted to keep his options open and check out other schools. "I still like USC a lot and I was at their game with Oregon last weekend," Evans said. "They have a great school but I'm leaning to Notre Dame right now. I may take a few more official visits and if I do, I'm looking at Michigan, Colorado and Oregon. "Nothing is set though and I would say it's 50-50 whether or not I take more trips." Evans has not set a timeline for his decision and still wants to talk his with family about his decision. "I always thought distance would be a factor for me, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that it doesn't matter. I'm going to pick the best school for me no matter where it is, and right now, I think that's Notre Dame."

That is great news. Another kid probably coming to ND for the right reasons.

YES!!!! Great news and Great Post!! I just hope this isn't an after-glow effect. His addition would truly solidify ND's offense and WR corps for years. If we could get Nixon, then our Offense could easily be a Top 5 offense in 2 years!! 50-50 chance of taking any more visits? Sounds like he could be our next commit.

I would discount the afterglow effect here because as he said he has already been back to USC for another game. Also it should be noted that it is not really news that he is no longer committed to USC, he said shortly after the news broke that he had committed to them during the USC/OSU weekend that he did not want to be considered committed, soft or otherwise, to any school, and that was said before he visited Notre Dame.

Obviously ND is in great shape here at this point in time. The only concern would be if he were to take more visits to schools besides USC and get "caught up in the moment" again. It is probably better both for Shaq and ND that he has not verballed to ND yet. This is one that we will probably have to sweat out until NSD regardless of the timing of any potential verbal.

I was thinking close to the same, IUB. I will not consider him ours until Febs NSD. But I sure feel alot better. The downside is if he does go in another direction, I will be that much more pissed.

Just when I was over being disappointed that we'd probably not get him, he pumps my hopes up again.

Im with everyone in saying there is still a good bit to go before Shaq is Irish. But I feel great about our chances at this point. And this is great news.

I will say that I'm not 100% sure he will end up Irish. But lets look at a couple of things IUB said in his post and other info on Shaqs profile thread.

1st: After the game in which folks said he commited to usc, he came out and said he didn't want to be considered a commit to any school.

2nd. His mom has stated her desire for him to attend ND.

3rd. He hasn't schedule any more visits and isn't sure if he will.

4th. He seems to be good friends with Cierre Woods.

I do feel very good about him being Irish and even if he does take visits to other schools I will not panic.
I think he will be Irish .

I say he'll verbal to us within a couple weeks. He lives in Inglewood and can watch USC home games ON THE FIELD. I'd keep doing that even if I verballed to ND.

Cierre Woods... ??? :mutumbo: I think I went camping there as a kid.

It's OK Dayton, I kid, but you know I love you. There is a Tiger Woods, but this is Cierre WOOD. I know others will make the same mistake, so I feel comfortable calling Dayton out on it cuz I know he will not get his feelings hurt like a newbie could. It's like calling our coach Charlie Weiss.

He is our #1 talent this year and other top recruits will be more attracted to ND with a headliner like him. Seeing how Allen is our only productive back thus far, Wood could and should get some carries as soon as he knows the plays and protection.

Back to Shaq Evans... he's right there with Woods and hopefully it's a solid verbal soon.
