BALTIMORE - Michael Campanaro has been auditioning at high school football combines all over the country this summer, and he feels comfortable. Nike noticed.

Campanaro, a defensive back at River Hill High in Clarksville, joined Dunbar's Tavon Austin and 22 other athletes from around the country as Nike Underclassmen All-Americans, Rivals.com announced last week.

“I was real excited when I found out,” Campanaro said. “Only 24 kids in the whole nation got selected, so it's a good feeling.”

While leading River Hill through an undefeated regular season, Campanaro recorded 66 tackles and three interceptions and was one of the state’s best defenders in single coverage.

But Campanaro was even more impressive as a running back. He rushed for 1,044 yards and 7 touchdowns on 120 carries, and caught 26 passes for 601 yards and 8 touchdowns.
“I look at myself more as an athlete,” Campanaro said. “That's what I went into these combines trying to prove.”

Campanaro will be in Pasadena, Calif., next week to take part in his sixth combine, where he'll try to garner more attention from college coaches.

Already looking at Maryland, Illinois, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Clemson, Campanaro has plenty of time to make his decision.

“Right now, I'm just trying to get a feel for all the different colleges and get into the right spot,” he said.

Austin was a key component to the Poets' run to the Maryland 1A title last fall. He recorded 31 touchdowns, including 27 rushing, en route to 1,701 yards from scrimmage. The sophomore ran for two touchdowns and caught one in the state title game to lift Dunbar (11-3) to its second state title in three years with a 38-23 win over Fort Hill.
Campanaro had no such luck.

After River Hill opened its season 13-0, the Hawks suffered a 37-18 loss to undefeated Friendly from Prince George’s County in the Maryland 3A final.

Notre Dame - “On Wednesday one of the personnel people Dave Peloquin took me around for a tour of the campus and facilities for about an hour and a half and everything was really nice on campus. Notre Dame has a great tradition and that shows with some of the things on campus like The Grotto and what not. I really thought the whole package there was pretty ridiculous. On Thursday I worked out with the defensive backs coach (Bill Lewis) for about a half an hour and then worked with the wide receivers coach (Rob Ianello) for another half an hour. After that I met with Coach (Ron) Powlus who told me he thought I was a Notre Dame kid and said they really like me a lot as an athlete, but to be patient in terms of an offer because they want to see how my body fills out and rarely offer kids really early like other schools. I liked it a lot at Notre Dame because they’re

Brenton, River Hill’s tallest player at 6-foot-4, scored 28 points to help some of his teammates — particularly Hostetler and sophomore guard Michael Campanaro — avenge a state championship football loss from earlier in the school year.

“After losing at M&T Bank [Stadium], you don’t want to be labeled as not being able to win the big one,” said Campanaro. “Hopefully next year we get back [to the football and basketball championships], because we have a young team.”

Damn this kid has talent. I know he maybe a little short, but you can't doubt the adjustments he makes to the ball in the air or the lines and openings that he hits. I'd like to see him get an offer, come Sept.

That was a bit of a contradiction.

I thought his film was very impressive no matter what age. He got to the corner on Joe Haden and ran by him. I also heard the ND coaches loved him in person. He is a playmaker and thats what we need in 09.

I may have to head down 70 and 29 about 45 minutes and see this kid play. It strikes me a bit odd to see a top talent in Howard County, MD (very suburban). Last year I almost went to see Benn or the DL from DC (forgot his name). Glad I didn't. I feel much safer seeing Campanero play. I could bring the family.

Clarksville, Md., junior athlete Michael Campanaro started his season off with a bang this weekend, helping to lead his team to a 48-0 win over Mt. Hebron High School. After the first weekend he is the state’s leader rushed having picked up 253 yards on just eight carries in the first half including touchdown runs of 68, 82 and 48 yards. He had 136 yards on 11 carries against Joe Haden's Friendly team last year in the state championship game. He was a soph and Joe was a senior. He is now bigger and faster. yea thats the same Joe haden that starts at DB for the Gators.

Check out the highlights from the State Game at M & T and watch him get to the corner and out run the Haden brothers.

Hey pigskin, what is the reamining schedule? I may go to a game. That is great ND is in the lead. Two questions... do you think ND offers and what position do think he would play at ND? Right now my guess is yes and KR / PR and flanker.

On a side note, I think we should have more of a flanker position for players like Tate, West, Prince, Gallup and a guy like Campanero. These guys have real speed and could run reverses, take hand offs, or burn you deep. Basically do what The Rocket did. Leave the 6'4" receivers on the outside.

Friday Night 11/9 @ Howard (County Championship Game...)

Yes I see him playing PR/KR/Flank in ND's Offense as well. I also think he is a guy that should get 8 or so carries out of the backfield. His vison and footwork needs to be used.

Versatile Campanaro Getting Interest From ND

Campanaro holds offers from Northwestern and Akron By Steve Wiltfong

Date: Dec 7, 2007

When Michael Campanaro left Notre Dame’s one-day football camp back in June, assistant coach Ron Powlus told the Clarksville, Md. athlete that they’d like to see how his body fills out, and to be patient about a scholarship offer.

OK, pigskin4life, any updates that might pertain to recent communication?

pigskin4life
12-09-2007, 07:32 AM
River Hill & Campanaro won the MD State Championship yesturday. Mike showed his toughness on both sides of the ball. He was held to 9 yards on 6 carries in the first half but the coach moved him to tailback (from right half back) and he gained 65 yards on 10 carries in the second half running between the tackles. Which loosened up a very good defense. It took two and three defenders to take him down and ET made him earn every yard. On defense he had 10 tackles and 3 PBU. He also had over 100 return yards on 1 KR & 2 PR. Remember Mike also led River Hill Basketball to their first ever State Championship 6 months ago.

In terms of communications, like the article stated Powlus came by the school last week and mentioned that ND could offer him as a DB very soon.

Michael is heading down to Texas on Wednesday. Tom Lemming has chosen him as one of 50 out of 500 to be on the front of his magazine. He will be taking the photo with Tom on Thursday at the Alamo.

Mike hit the weights right after the state game. He is now 5'11" 182 and was timed at 4.36 on the track last week. I would expect a mid 4.4 on turf in Texas.

His season highlights were sent to Powlus last week. He should have them up on youtoube shortly....

Nice new story on Campanero. http://recruiting.scout.com/2/730155.html

"The main three things I'm looking at are academics, coaches and the overall program," he said. "I want a school where I feel really comfortable with all the coaches and where there's just a good vibe."

He plans on attending the Northwestern Junior Day on Feb. 23 and will be at Notre Dame on Feb. 24 and Connecticut on March 1. "I went to a camp at Notre Dame last summer and really liked it," he said. "Of course, I love the history they have there and I think they'll be turning things around this year. Also, the academics there are big too."
Campanaro says that he thinks Wake Forest is close to offering him. "I love all the coaches there and am already building a great relationship with them," he said. "They are still on the rise and are really building a name for themselves. They told me they definitely plan to offer, but that all the coaches need to review my tape first."

While he doesn't have any spring or summer camps yet planned, Campanaro says he'll definitely try to attend a few.

"I see myself making somewhat an early commitment," he said. "I'd like to take about three visits in the fall and make my decision. I doubt I'll take all five trips."
Campanaro reports a 2.8 core GPA and an 860 SAT, which he plans on retaking. No retake date set yet.

Pigskin, what's the latest? He seems high on Wake and they did offer. I remember the talk was DB, but this sounds like he wants to be the next Welker. I see him as that kind of player too. What is the 3rd team in the mix? It sounds like Wake, ND and ? Any feedback you might get from the 28 of this month would be great.

I have to hope the 860 is not only out of 1600, but also either a misprint or an error in communication as well.

As we can remember from Milton Knox's recruitments, there are such things as re-takes.

I also thought Jeremy Brown had a similar SAT score last year, and he got an offer, so I wouldn't get too concerned about that at the moment.

I think each section is scored between 200 and 800.

Hey guys, if he can qualify....why would he be a Wake Forest lean? Plus on a 1600 point SAT you get 200 just for signing your name. 2400 I'd say its 400, so if it's truly 860 on a 2400 scale...yikes! But I doubt it!

Jeremy Brown received a conditional offer like Jonathan Baldwin, Martavious Odoms, and a couple others. It's basically an offer for guys who have to take a test or they dont qualify right away.

According to his buddy Jordan Love, Campanaro may commit to Wake this weekend.

Good get for Wake. Kid is a player, I'm just a tad bit suspect as every highlight video I see seems like it has been sped up by the creator. Wish I knew someone who has seen this kid play and isn't biased.

It would appear that ship has sailed for both Campanaro & Love.

Meaning they were not going to get ND offers?
